Sheffield
United sack manager Ken Furphy . . . Dynamo Kiev win the
European Supercup . . . Rodney Marsh Is transfer listed ,
. . Terry Pake establishes a new League appearances
record .... England lose in Czechoslavakia in the
European Championship.
1 Gerry Summers is sacked at Oxford after seven years as
manager. He says, 'I kept a Third Division side in
Division Two. Last season when we sold two of my best
players - Curran and Roberts-I wanted to resign, but they
wouldn't let me go' .. . Steve Burtenshaw is also
dismissed at Sheffield Wednesday.
2 Bobby Svarc signs for Blackburn Rovers from Colchester
for £25,000-3 record for Colchester.
4 West Ham and QPR lose their unbeaten records. The
former lose at home to Everton and the latter are beaten
at Leeds. Leicester draw for the seventh time in 11
league matches . . . Bury are still undefeated . . .
Three players are sent off including Len Badger of bottom
of the-table Sheffield U. . . . Dave Cunningham
(Southend) is the first player to collect 20 disciplinary
points-he'll start a three match suspension on Monday . .
. Phil Walker, a 20-year-old amateur who only signed for
Millwall five days ago scores the winning goal on his
debut for the London club . . . Goalkeeper Pat Jcnnings
establishes a new appearance record for Tottenham. The
2-2 draw against Newcastle is his 419th league game for
the club.
6 Sheffield United dismiss manager Ken Furphy after 11
league matches this season which have yielded only three
points. Now the town of Sheffield has two league teams
without a manager .. . The FA Charily Shield match will
be sponsored by Pont ins Holiday Camp firm for the next
three years ... Oleg Blochin scores twice for Dynamo Kiev
in their 2-0 Supercup victory over Bayern Munich. The
Soviet champions win the trophy on a 3-0 aggregate.
7 Chelsea will issue identity cards to their terrace
supporters in an effort to stop hooliganism.
8 Notts Co. provide a major shock by beating Leeds 1-0 at
Elland Road in the League Cup. The scorer is lan Scanlon.
13 Rodney Marsh is put on the transfer list by Manchester
Cily for 'not giving 100% to Ihe club'. Marsh denies the
allegation and says that he does not wish to leave...
Stuart Pearson of Manchester U. and John Cidman, the
Aston Villa defender, are included in the England squad
for the Czechoslovakia match, but neither Hudson nor
Bowles is included... Following a trial period, Willie
Bell is appointed manager of Birmingham. Chairman Keith
Coombs says, 'We didn't realize that we had such a jewel
in our midst!'
15 A night of European Championship foolballHolland
lake revenge on Poland by winning 3-0 in Amsterdam,
Yugoslavia strengthen their position on top of Group 3
and Austria beat Luxembourg 6-2 ... Len Ashurst is the
new manager of struggling Sheffield Wednesday . . . Jimmy
Sirrel leaves Notts Co. and takes over Ken Furphy's old
job at Sheffield U. Sirrel had no contract with County,
but the 53-year-old Scot gave a month's notice lo the
club. 'I can do both jobs for a few weeks', he says,
'there is plenty of time'... Gillingham want compensation
for Ashurst, who has a contract which still has 19 months
unfulfilled ... Manager Alan Ashman resigns at Carlisle.
16 An Aston Villa bid for Rodney Marsh is turned down by
Manchester City.
18 Bury, the last unbeaten club in the Football League,
lose 4-0 at Peterborough ... . Manchester U. are back on
top of Division One following their 3-1 win over
Arsenal... Frank Casper of Burnley scores his 100th
league goal in his first game for 19 months . . . Crowd
riots stop two games in Scotland, at Motherwell and
Celtic Park. Motherwell beat Rangers 2-1, but the Celtic
v Hibernian game with the visitors leading 2-0 is
abandoned due to thick fog with five minutes left to
play.
20 David McCreery, Manchester United's 18-year-old
striker is included in the Irish squad against Norway . .
. Terry Naylor is suspended for two matches . . . Syd
Owen leaves Leeds, because the club has refused to give
him a written contract. 'I was happy at Leeds,' says the
coach, 'but I am looking for security' . . . The England
squads38 playerstravelling to Czechoslovakia,
are insured for around 10 million pounds.
23 Archie Gemnull is recalled bio the Scotland squad
following his excellent displays for Derby.
24 Brian Little, the Aston Villa striker, is out of
football with cartilage trouble . . . Eric Sykes,
comedian and scriptwriter, accepts an invitation to join
the Oldham Board of Directors.
25 Referee Peter Reeves takes the players off the pitch
and the West Ham v Manchester U. match is suspended for
18 minutes. There is a pitch invasion caused partly by an
overspill from the terraces, partly by fighting.. . .
West Ham win 2-1 and the two teams plus QPR are locked on
top of the table with 19 points each ... Terry Paine, 36,
the Hereford player-coach establishes a new league
appearance record 765! The previous holder of the
record was Jimmy Dickinson of Portsmouth.
26 Several players are doubtful for the England trip to
Czechoslovakia and Don Revie calls in Frank Lampard to
join the senior squad ... Withdrawals from the Scottish
squad include Hay, Harvey, Buchan, and Sandy Jardine.
27 Don Revie selects an attacking formation against
Czechoslovakia . . . Gerry Summers, the ex-Oxford
manager, is appointed as the new boss of Gillingham ...
The Sports Council is considering a gambling levy and
using the money to develop football grounds as community
sports centres.
28 The England U-23 side draws in Trnavasubstitute
Peter Taylor equalizes an earlier Czech goal .. .
Scotland beat Denmark 4-1 in the same competition with
Andy Gray of Aston Villa getting a hat-trick.
29 The Czechoslovakia v England match is suspended
because of fog after 16 minutes This is only the second
lime that an England match has been postponed in 103
years of international football . . . In tbe other
matches, both Scotland and N. Ireland win convincingly .
. . Don Givens scores four limes in the Republic of
Ireland's 4-0 win over Turkey. Givens now has eight goals
in the European Championship and he leads the chart of
goal-gelters. Givens equals a 41-year-old record set by
Paddy Moore . . . Adrian Alston joins Cardiff from Lulon
for £30,000.
30 Czechoslovakia beat England 2-1 in Bratislava
their first victory against England since 1934. Channon
puts England ahead, but Nehoda equalizes seconds before
half-time. Gallis gets tbe winner early in the second
period. Gillard and two Czech players are booked.
Following an incident on the field the Czech substitute
goalkeeper Vencel remonstrates with the referee from the
substitute's bench and is shown the red disc and told to
go into the dressing-room. McFarland is injured and
substituted by Watson. This is the first England defeat
since Don Revie took over as manager.
31 Don Howe is the new coach of Leeds. The ex-WesI
Bromwich manager has been helping the Turkish side,
Galatasaray during the last few months on the
understanding that if a job in England was offered to
him, he was free to take it.
