2 The PFA representatives meet the Football League to
discuss the 'freedom of contract issue'. Alan Hardaker
condemns the transfer dealings, saying that they lead to
bankruptcy. 'If more clubs refused to pay inflated prices
and concentrated on their youth development schemes, the
game would be far better for it.' . . . Trevor Hartley,
the League's youngest manager at 27, is sacked by
Bournemouth. Tony Nelson, chief scout, is the new
caretaker manager.
3 Nottingham F. sack Allan Brown on the eve of their
Cup-tie v Tottenham . . . Don Revie writes in the Evening
Standard, 'Some players don't realise how lucky they are.
They should go down on their hands and knees every night
and thank God they are doing something which they love
and being well paid for it at the same time. There are
pressures in every job and you have to learn to accept
them.'
4 A truly astonishing day in the FA Cup. All five
non-League clubs survive and go into the fourth round
draw. Wimbledon win 1-0 at Burnley with a Mick Mahon
goal, and Chris Kelly gets the winner for Leatherhead at
Brighton. Wycombe, Stafford R., and Altrincham draw their
gamestwo of them against First Division opposition
... At Goodison, Altrincham take the lead, then Everton's
Gary Jones is sent off, and John Connolly is taken off
with a broken leg. 9-man Everton equalise through a Dave
Clements penalty ... In the other ties, Arsenal draw with
York at Highbury, and Manchester U. are held to a
goalless draw at Old Trafford by Walsall. But holders
Liverpool, favourites Leeds, and last year's beaten
finalists, Newcastle, come through ... In the Glasgow
derby, Rangers beat Celtic 3-0.
6 Tom Johnston, manager of York, is leaving the club on
the eve of their Cup replay. He is returning to
Huddersfield as general manager . . . Brian Clough is the
new boss at Nottingham F. .. . According tp expert
medical opinion, Roy McFarland will be able to play top
class football later in the season ... Bobby Gould, who
is taken off at half-time in the Southampton-West Ham Cup
tie, is seriously injured. In fact he had played for 30
minutes with a broken leg, and headed a goal!
7 Stafford Rangers beat Rotherham 1-0 and become the
third non-League club to reach round four of the FA Cup.
Altrincham and Wycombe are both beaten narrowly by Evertoa and Middlesbrough
respectively. Walsall beat Manchester U. 3-2 in a
dramatic replay. Young striker Alan Buckley scores twice
for the Midlanders.
8 Brian Clough's reign
at Forest opens with a shock FA Cup replay win at
Tottenham. Neil Martin scores with a header in the 34th
minute-the only goal of a rather colourless match.
11 Alfie Conn scores a hat-trick for Tottenham on his
first team League debut at Newcastle. Tottenham's 5-2
victory at St James's Park is the highest away score in
Division One this season. But in all divisions, Plymouth
establish the new record - 7-3 at Bournemouth. At
Sheffield, referee Roger Kirkpatrick takes the teams off
the field for five minutes because of a whistler in the
crowd... Ipswich are now one point clear of the field,
and at the other end, Carlisle, Leicester, and Luton are
five points adrift of 19th placed Chelsea.
13 Mick McGuire is the latest Norwich recruit. John Bond
pays £60,000 to Coventry for him.
14 Don Revie picks senior stars Paul Madeley and Colin
Todd for the Under-23 squad against Wales. They are the
two 'over-age' players allowed, and the team manager
wishes to experiment with a new defensive formation. The
astonished Madeley (30) says 'I never realized it was
possible for anyone of my age to play for an Under-23
side. Maybe I'll feel like an old man among all the
bright young stars'. The 'young stars' include newcomers
Wallington and Glen Keeley. Kevin Beattie, who didn't
turn up for the previous Under-23 match, has been
forgiven and is also in the squad.
15 Both League Cup semi-final first leg ties end in 2-2
draws. At Old Trafford, the ex-Manchester U. striker Ted
MacDougall equalises two minutes from the end for Norwich
against his old club . . . Fourth Division Chester -
twice behind -draw against Aston Villa with goals from
Owen and Moore ... Mike Everitt, on his 34th birthday, is
sacked as manager of Brentford.
16 Manchester U. sign Tommy Baldwin on a two month loan
as temporary replacement for the injured Stuart
Pearson... Attendances in the Football League are
slightly higher in the first half of the season than last
year.
17 Bradford City manager Bryan Edwards is sacked... Jeff
Blockley signs for Leicester. The £100,000 fee is well
below the figure Arsenal paid Coventry for him 18 months
ago.
18 Bob Latchford scores twice on his 24th birthday at
Birmingham, against his old club, and Everton go to the
top of table. A Sykes own goal completes the 3-0
scoreline and Dave, Bob's brother is the Birmingham
goalkeeper... Manchester C. beat Newcastle 5-1 - the
second week running that Newcastle have conceded five
goals. At half-time manager Harvey goes into the
referee's dressing room, asking . for more protection for
his players.
20 Bill Anderson, assistant manager of Nottingham F.,
resigns ... Wrexham put all their players on the transfer
list. The club's financial position is 'embarrassing andm
'serious' according to manager John Neal, and they are
forced to unload in order to survive ... Paul Madeley has
dropped out of the Under-23 squad because he is suffering
the after effects of the innoculation given to 34 players
of the senior squad in preparation for the Cyprus trip .
. . John Docherty, 34-year-old Q.P.R. coach, is the new
Brentford manager. As a player he signed for Brentford on
three different occasions, following moves to Sheffield
U. and Reading.
21 A fourth consecutive victory for the England Under-23
team. They beat Wales 2-0 at Wrexham with goals by the
Ipswich pair Beattie and Johnston.
22 Ron Saunders chalks up a unique hat-trick. He is
taking his third club to a League Cup final in successive
years. Aston Villa, 3-2 winners over Chester, will meet
Norwich, conquerors of Manchester U.... Ray Evans of
Spurs signs for Millwall for a £35,000 fee ... Richy
Nicholson, 15 years a league referee and linesman, has
been banned for life for publicly criticising fellow
official, Clive Thomas. Nicholson says: 'The Referees'
Association's attitude is all wrong. Nobody is above
criticism, not even referees'.
23 England's European Championship match in Cyprus is
called off by UEFA due to the political situation on the
island ... Derby's objection is rejected, but the English
club will lodge an appeal in order to stay in the UEFA
Cup. In the mean time, Velez are fined £500 because
spectators set off firecrackers. The Yugoslavs are paired
in the quarter-final draw with Twente Enschede . . .
Leeds will play Anderlecht in the European Cup. Manager
Armfield says, 'Anderlecht are a good side, but the
important thing is that we won't be involved in too much
travelling' ... John Benson (Norwich) has been appointed
as the player/manager of Bournemouth ... Grirmsby pay
£20,000 to Rotherham for striker Ron Wigg.
24 Q.P.R. are the first club to reach the last 16 of the
FA Cup, by beating Notts Co. 3-0 in an evening match...
Manager Harry Gregg leaves Swansea... Alex Cropley,
Arsenal's expensive Scottish winger, is out with a broken
leg.
25 Southern League team Wimbledon hold Leeds to a
goalless draw at Elland Road in the FA Cup. Dicky Guy
saves a Lorimer penalty in the 82nd minute ...
Leather-head are out, after leading 2-0 at half-time at
Leicester, and Peterborough beat Stafford Rangers 2-1...
Holders Liverpool are beaten by Ipswich, and last
season's losing finalists, Newcastle, lose at Walsall.. .
Several league games and a couple of Cup ties are
postponed because of wet weather.
27 After three year's absence, Charlie Cooke is included
in the Scottish squad.
28 West Ham beat Swindon 2-1 in their FA Cup replay and
qualify for an all-London clash against Q.P.R. in Round 5
... The Wimbledon-Leeds tie is postponed due to the
waterlogged state of the pitch. Now the match will be
played on February 10 at Crystal Palacea two week
delay in order to release the Leeds players for
Scotland's match in Valencia.
29 George Armstrong, who hasn't scored since May 1973,
gets two goals in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Coventry in the
FA Cup replay . . . The postponed England match against
Cyprus will be played on May 11 ... Chris Kelly, the
Leatherhead striker, signs for Millwall. No fee is
involved, but the London club will play a friendly at
Leatherhead . . . Paul Smith, the Huddersfield midfield
player, is transferred to Cambridge for £1!
30 Chester sign Graham Pugh of Huddersfield for £20,000.
