1 Trevor Francis, the Birmingham striker who withdrew from the England squad earlier in the week, is likely to be out of football for three months with a leg injury.

2 John Duncan, Tottenham's new striker from Scotland, scores two goals at Stoke, where the Londoners draw 2-2 ... Ipswich beat Liverpool and the teams in the top half of the table are bunching again ... A Stuart Pearson hat-trick helps Manchester U. to a 4-0 win over Oxford. United are now five points clear at the top of Division Two.

4 Martin Olivers is still available for transfer. After a long talk with manager Neill, the Spurs striker insists on staying on the list. Eddie Kelly of Arsenal would also like a move, but the club wishes to sign a replacement first.

5 After a 0-0 draw in Budapest, Liverpool are out of the European Cup-Winners Cup on the 'away-goals' ruling - the third English club to be eliminated this season' through this device!

6 Leeds, with Bremner back in the side, beat Ujpest Dozsa 3-0 in the second leg of their European Cup tie to go through 5-1 on aggregate... Derby salvage England's fading fortunes in the UEFA Cup by earning a 2-2 draw in Madrid against Atletico and then winning the penalty kicks contest 7-6. Powell scores from the last vital, spot kick, and then Colin Boulton saves from Eusebio... Sammy Nelson of Arsenal has had an operation on his left leg and will be out of action for at least six weeks: ... Joao Havelange says that FIFA will choose a 'back-up' venue for the 1978 World- Cup Finals in case Argentina fails to meet the necessary requirements ... John Gidrnan, the Aston Villa full back, is in hospital with eye injuries after a firework accident.

7 Ron Bradley, the Scunthorpe manager, resigns ... Mario Marinho is banned for three matches by FIFA following a clash with Neeskens during the World Cup ... Peter Feely, who is on loan to Gillingham from Fulham, is staying with the Third Division club-the fee is £6000 . . . Brentford pay £15,000 for Terry Johnson of.. Southend ... Derby County draw Velez Mostar in the.UEFA Cup.

9 A remarkable day for the Bristol clubs in Division Two. City beat Manchester U. 1-0 at home, and Rovers defeat second-placed Norwich by the same score . . . Manchester C. take over the lead in the First Division after their 1-0 win at Stoke ... Both Jimmy Pearce and Peter Collins of Spurs are told to give up football for health reasons.

11 Norman Hunter has a cartilage operation, which puts him out of football for three months ... Alan Sunderland, the young Wolves forward, breaks his leg in an accidental collision during training.

12 Jimmy Secular receives a £25,000 payment from Cardiff as settlement for his broken contract... Terry Cooper is included in the England squad for the Wembley game against Portugal. The Leeds full-back, 30, made his last appearance for England against Switzerland in 1971. Since his return into first-class football, after a long injury lay-off, Cooper has played only 17 matches. Revie says, 'He is in on merit. I am too much of a professional to pick people on sentiment.'... Martin Chivers signs a new four-year contract for Tottenham.

13 The shock result of the season in the League Cup -Fourth Division Chester beat First Division Leeds 3-0 ... The transfer market comes to life again. Terry McDermott, the England Under-23 midfielder, goes to Liverpool from Newcastle for a £175,000 fee. Alf Wood joins Hull from Millwall (£75,000) and Arsenal take Robbie James from Swansea on a month's loan.

14 Luton sign Peter Spiring from Liverpool for £70,000. This ex-Bristol C. winger hasn't made a first team appearance during his 18-month stay with Liverpool. .. Don Revie bans his players from watching the TV recording of the Switzerland v Portugal (3-0) friendly. He is worried that his players might under-estimate Portugal after seeing them in action!

15 Terry Mancini is banned for two matches and fined £150 for bringing the game into disrepute. The Arsenal defender has admitted that after the Q.P.R. v Ipswich game he pushed his shorts down in front of the directors' box as a gesture of jubilation. The incident has not been reported by the referee, but has been widely publicised on TV and in the newspapers ... Gordon Jago pays £25,000 for Huddersfield striker Phil Summerill-he is the replacement in the Millwall team for the departed Alf Wood ... Dan Tana, the Yugoslav born showbiz personality, is the new chairman of Brentford ... Doncaster 'suspend' manager Maurice Setters with full pay.

16 44 goals in the First Division-the best for four years! 136 in all divisions - the best this season! Top attendances at Goodison (56,797) and Old Trafford (55,615). Ipswich take over the lead on goal average, but only 2 points separate the top ten clubs. On a good day for London clubs, only Chelsea are beaten in Division One - 0-5 at Newcastle! Ray Clarke gets a hat-trick for Mansfield, and leads the League scoring chart with 17 goals... lan Scanlon also scores three times in 2 min. 45 sec. for Notts Co. v Sheffield W. It is the second fastest recorded hat-trick behind Jimmy Scarth (Gillingham) who scored a hat-trick in 2 min. 30 sees, in 1952.

19 A last-minute Dave Johnson goal gives Young England a 3-2 win over Portugal in Lisbon. Steve Ferryman is sent off in the 57th minute for dissent. England now lead the Group with 4 points after 2 matches ... Rod Belfitt joins Fulham from Sunder-land on a month's loan.

20 A mixed day for British football in the European Championship. England play out a rather dull goalless draw against Portugal at Wembley, Scotland lose at home to Spain, and Eire draw with Turkey in Istanbul. Terry Cooper is taken off at Wembley with a leg injury after 23 minutes . . Hutchison misses a penalty at Hampden win Scotland are leading 1-0 ... Givens scores Eire's goal - his fourth in two internationals ... Off the field, UEFA suspensions will affect several players. Terry Mancini (sent off against Russia) is banned for four matches, Duncan McKenzie (sent off against Ujpest Dozsa) for three, and Tommy Smith (feigning injury) for two matches . . . Wales beat Luxembourg 5-0 at Swansea - their best ever win against foreign opposition.

21 The long-drawn-out Peter Shilton saga is over. The Leicester keeper moves to Stoke in a £325,000 deal - a world record for a goalkeeper. Ambitious Stoke have now spent three quarters of a million pounds recently on players, and will pay for Shilton in instalments. Leicester use some of the money by offering £160,000 for John Toshack, Liverpool's Welsh international striker . .. Spurs agree that Chivers can play abroad - possibly in South Africa - during the summer . . . Brighton sign Graham Winstanley from Carlisle for £20,000 - he is the 17th new player since manager Peter Taylor joined the club just over a year ago..

22 Ron Atkinson, the ex-Oxford player, moves into the other University town as manager of Cambridge U.

23 Nine league games are postponed because of ground conditions .. . Manchester C. lead Division One after their 4-1 win over Leicester . . . Peter Noble heads three
-goals in Burnley's 4-1 win over Newcastle. Malcolm Macdonald is substituted in Ithis match — the first time since he joined Newcastle three-and-a-half years ago . .. IPeter Shilton's debut for Stoke is described by manager Waddington as 'out-of-Ithis-world' . . . Don Rogers gets his first goal for Q.P.R. in their surprising 3-1 win at Middlesbrough . . . No shocks in the First Round of the FA Cup, although several non-league clubs manage to draw with Third and Fourth Division opponents ... A heavy stone is hurled into the Newcastle coach as the team leaves Burnley on their return journey. It hits John Tudor, whose head wound needs 12 stitches.

25 In the FA Cup, three non-League clubs - Wigan, Altrincham, and Gateshead - beat Fourth Division opponents, and Colchester defeat Southampton in the League Cup, to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in the club's history . . . The PFA meeting in Manchester, under chairman Derek Dougan, renews the claim for freedom of contract. They argue that the present system is not only illegal but it costs football a great deal of money. Secretary Cliff Lloyd says, 'The tragedy is that when we met Minister for Sport, Denis Howell, following the Chester Report, he said there would be no levy board unless the recommendations on contracts and transfers were implemented. Yet the League chairmen totally ignored our case, even Ithough it has been substantiated in the High Court and recommended by three
independent bodies.'... West Ham sign another striker - Alan Taylor from Rochdale. 21-year-old Taylor joined Rochdale from non-league football for £3000, but West Ham pay £45,000 for him... In future, England under-23 players will get £50 win bonuses, and £25 for a draw above their usual £50 appearance money.

26 The Toshack transfer to Leicester is off. A medical report casts doubts over his future and Leicester withdraw their offer ... Three more non-League clubs reach the Second Round of the FA Cup.

27 Derby manager Dave Mackay sends on two subs against Velez Mostar twenty minutes from the end of their UEFA Cup tie with the score 0-1. One of them, Bourne, gets two goals, and the other, Hinton, one, for a 3-1 win! ... In the Alan Gilzean Testimonial, Spurs beat Red Star Belgrade 2-0 in front of over 22,000 spectators ... Manchester U. transfer George Graham to Portsmouth in exchange for Ron Davies, the veteran Welsh international striker ... Sexton makes his first signing for Q.P.R. He buys Don Shanks from Luton for £35,000.


28 Millwall sign Ray Goddard, the Orient keeper, for £10,000 and Tommy Baldwin from Chelsea on loan .. Newcastle manager Joe Harvey has been reprimanded by his chairman for saying that his club may not compete again in the Texaco Cup. Lord Westwood says, 'Our involvement in the competition is a matter for the board to decide, and this certainly is not going to be our last season in it'. Newcastle are in the final of the Cup where they play Southampton.

30 The highest League attendance since April 1973 - 60,585 - are at Old Trafford for the Second Division clash in which United beat Sunderland 3-2 ... Stoke are the new leaders of the First Division. They have gained five points out of six since the signing of Shilton, and are now one point ahead of the field.
