June

June 1972 was covered in two editions of Rothmans....

1) As appeared in Rothman's Football Yearbook 1972-73 (3rd year) :

The Queene Anne Press, London 1972

Diary 1971- 72

June 1972

2 Hereford U. F.A. Cup giant-killers are elected to the Fourth Division at the annual meeting of the Football League in London. They replace Barrow who failed in a second ballot after the two clubs had tied on the first count with 26 votes each.

In the second ballot, Hereford gained 29 to Barrow's 20. Northampton T. (49 votes), Crewe Alexandra (46) and Stockport C. (46) were re-elected.

Colin Addison, Hereford's player-manager who will miss the season's start through suspension, promised 'a determined and dedicated effort from all at Edgar Street to put us on the map in League football'. With a catchment area of 200,000, gates of 6,000 and a profit made on the season of 16,500 pounds, Hereford have a good basis for success.

Other points arising from the meeting were: minimum admission charges increased from 30p to 40p;
Len Shipman (Leicester) retained as President of the Football League, with Lord Westwood (Newcastle) and Syd Collings (Sunderland) re-elected to the management committee;
the new 'points for punishment' plan will operate but under the jurisdiction of the F.A.;
and suspensions will be for matches rather than weeks.

Items which failed to achieve the necessary threequarter majority were Blackpool's three-up-and-down scheme; Nottingham F.'s plea to look at Sunday football; Everton's suggestion of a 15 minute half-time break; Orient's idea for restriction of loan transfers and a new Cup for Third and Fourth Division clubs sponsored by Southend U. and Stockport C.
