About Bob 70-71

Peter Shilton Leicester City

Peter Shilton playing for Leicester City v Arsenal.

Peter Shilton was the last playing player in the whole 1970-71 album. He became the first and so far only player ever to play 1,000 English League games, in a match for Leyton Orient, that was televised live to celebrate the occassion.

With 125 caps, Peter is also the current record holder for the most games played for England, no mean feat when you consider that Ray Clemence (who was capped 61 times) severely restricted his appearences between 1975-81.

He was also the last player born in the 1940s to play League football !! An outstanding goalkeeper, who peaked young ... and then again when he added experience to his repertoire.

My main memories of his playing career are contrasting ones from two World Cups . 1) In 1986 being the victim of Maradona's cheating 'hand of God' when Shilton played a blinder; and 2) cheering him on as part of the England semi-final team in 1990, when Shilton played his last England games and was the best goalie in the competition.

Thanks for thirty great years, Shilts !

Shilton joke in the best possible taste...

Fan A "That Shilton is incredible, if he plays his cards right he could still be playing when he's fifty"
Fan B "If he had played his cards right, he could have retired when he was thirty"

Boom, boom.
