Shoot Monthly May 2001 1st edition.

Bob Rating: B

Of course the Bob rating refers to the 70-71 content, not how good the magazine is. Nevertheless 1 out of 5 would have been about right for that, too. The weekly 'Shoot' magazine has been getting steadily more dreadful over the past two years, and I was suspicious that it was being wound down for closure. Well I've not seen the weekly recently, but this monthly made it's back-door launch.

The front page of the original first magazine was Bobby Moore, this first edition has Britain's biggest star David Beckham, with a promise of an exclusive interview inside. There's articles on two of my favourites from the current Leeds United team, Alan Smith and Paul Robinson ... but in spite of that - the magazine's a bit, well limp. There's nothing to make it stand out in the Football Monthly crowd whatsoever.

It seems to be aimed at the young end of the market, but it's not nearly eye catching enough to grab the younger person's attention. The information in the magazine was nearly as old as its intended younger readers. Hence in the May edition I'm reading about the joys of the Kingstonian manager, Geoff Chapple, several days after his team were relegated from the Conference League ...

There was only two articles of Bob 70-71 interest 1) Joe Royle gives his views on young talent in football, which was very interesting, and 2) a commentry by Frank Tennyson about England going on and on about the 1966 World Cup win, which frankly, I completely agree with ... even as the webmaster of a 1970s Football website !!! There is a fabulous picture of the triumphant players parading the Cup round Wembly after the win accompanying the article, which fittingly means Bobby Moore does at least get a mention in this number one edition, too.

Sorry 'Shoot' I've bought the magazine for over thirty years, but unless it gets better soon, it won't even be here in another year's time ...

Hammers News. May 2001 Volume 7, number 9. www.hammersnews.com

Bob Rating: BBB

'Hammers News' is the official magazine of West Ham United, and has often come to the attention of Bob's 70-71 pages for its profiles on ex-players, and this month is no exception.

  • The 'Vintage Clare' article this month, is Coventry City manager Noel Cantwell. Hopefully, all being well, I shall cover this in more detail at a later date.

  • Next up is an article on internet auctions called, natrually enough - 'Hitting the net' ... My experience of this would be better titled, ' Hitting the Wallet'. One such picture I saw ( but could not afford) was reproduced in the magazine.

A signed picture of Sir Geoff as he scores that famous hatrick goal
in the World Cup Final of 1966.
This image also came from an auction site and I've included this image on
Sir Geoff's own page

  • Last but not least there's the mention of the odd 70-71 player in Billy Green's very own article reproduced on Billy's page.

Match of the Day Magazine: MOTD, May, 2001.

Bob Rating: B

Very poor this month. Apart from the regular articles by Brian Clough (Derby County manager) and Trevor Brooking (West Ham squad), only two articles caught my imagination

  • 'The Club That Faced Death' about Brian Little's (Aston Villa)Hull City with a post script on other folded club.

  • This is followed immediatelyby 'The Manager Under Threat' about Terry Dolan's (Huddersfield Town) mixed fortunes at York City.

  • However, as usual the centre poster is an excellent old phot, this time it covers Accrington Stanley versus Reading in the 1960s.

  • The Wonderland feature this month has West Ham United as chosen by Trevor Bruford. His Dream Team includes only players he saw, but there's still Billy Bonds (West Ham) and Trevor Brooking (West Ham squad). There's a picture of Trevor and Frank Lampard (West Ham) holding the FA Cup, too.

  • Incidentally, I see the Billy Bremner staue sneeks an appearance in the background of a picture on page 68!

Four Four Two. May 2001, no.81. See 'FourFourTwo'

Bob Rating BBB

I've decided to return to writing magazine reviews, but this time to keep it as brief as possible. I'll even have a go at back tracking a bit.

This issue has the following essential Bob70-71 articles :

1) 'The King With the Wobbly Throne' all about Joe Royle and his current role as Manchester City's manager.

2) 'King of Clubs' An excellent feature about Pele playing at club level, with some great pictures of his Santos days.

3) 'Death of a Hero' covers the decline and fall of dsome of football's greats, namely Bobby Moore, Gerd Muller, Hughie Gallacher, Don Revie, and Garchina.

Leeds, Leeds Leeds. April 2001. leedsu@comag.co.uk

Bob Rating BBB

1) Magic Moments features Leeds Cup 1972 FA Cup win

2) There's a 6 page feature and interview packed with photos with Jack Charlton (Leeds United).

3) An obscure article of Don Revie with Eric Morcombe !!! Thery share similar tastes in overcoats...

A disappointing Billy Bremner count of just 3 (or maybe 4), though, because all but 1 was from an advert.

For further April news ...
