Eric the Half a Manager

Bromsgrove Rovers of the Ryman League Western Division have taken on Eric McManus (Coventry City squad) on a temporary basis whilst they seek a permanent replacement for the managers post following the departure of George Rooney. Eric is apparantly in the post of Director of Recruitment at Derby County, a post in which he will continue.

27/10/00 - McManus takes the hot seat

ERIC McManus is to take over Bromsgrove Rovers on a temporary basis following George Rooney's departure.

The former Notts County goalkeeper had been helping out Rovers on the coaching side while combining his role with Director of Recruitment at Derby County.

McManus has been given permission by Derby to take charge at the Victoria Ground while Rovers look for a permanent successor to Rooney.

His first game in charge will be tomorrow's rescheduled Worcestershire Senior Cup first round tie at Moor Green (3pm).

Rovers chief executive Pat Bannister said: "I have got every confidence in Eric taking charge for the next few games.

"He played a big part in getting players of a good standard to the club when he was at Walsall.

"We have some very tough games coming up but if we can get confidence and morale from the players back, regardless of who is in charge, we will improve.

"The mood in the camp is very positive. The lads gave 100 per cent for George and were still 100 per cent committed to the club at training last night."

That Tinker Taylor

Peter Taylor (Southend) managed to upset just about everybody by not choosing the team anyone expected. Taylor went for a youth policy in his squad selection for his first caretaker match in charge of England. Before he did this, of course, everyone was saying that's what the next manager should do, but when it really happened everyone got all wobbly about it.

Doom was predicted against Italy in Turin, but a 1-0 defeat was neither one thing nor the other, so the debate continues as to Taylor's real credentials for the post. Scottish Invasion of West Yorks Part II

The vacant Bradford City manager post is looking set to go to former Hearts manager Jim Jeffries. Jim resigned after a heavy 6-2 defeat to local rivals Hibernian (I listened to it on the radio it was good fun as a neutral), but has a track record of doing well with clubs on a stretched budget. Given that Jim is fifty, I strongly suspect he is a Bob 70-71 man, if anyone knows email me. See BBC SPORT BRADFORD CITY Jefferies set for Bradford job

Scottish Invasion of West Yorks !

Huddersfield Town formalised the appointment of Lou Macari (Celtic squad) as their manager proper - Lou having taken over as caretaker manager when Steve Bruce resigned. Lou has brought in former Scottish and Man Utd team mate, Joe Jordan (Morton) as his assistant (see more about Joe below)

Here's how the official site reported it at HTAFC.COM News - Lou and Joe

JOE WELCOMED ON BOARD

Lou Macari believes that the appointment of Joe Jordan as his new coaching assistant will signal a change in Huddersfield’s fortunes.

Macari, previously Town’s European scout, has been giving the task of steering the club away from the Division One danger zone. Jordan has joined the Town staff to work with his former Manchester United colleague and current coach John Deehan. The pair will both be responsible for putting the players through their paces on the training ground. The Scot enjoyed a fruitful playing career, which included spells at Leeds, Manchester United and AC Milan. And Macari is in no doubt that Jordan’s presence at the McAlpine Stadium will work wonders for the club.

He said: “I’m looking forward to getting on with the job and I’ve asked Joe to come in and join myself and John as a management team. Obviously, I am the manager and in the firing line. But Joe and John will work together with me to achieve what we need. I’ve known Joe for more than 20 years and was with him at Manchester United. I believe that when he went to Italy and came back, he returned a much, much better player because he learned good habits from the Italians. And he carried that on right throughout his playing career and into management and those habits are the ones we need to get over to our players here and rather quickly.”

Jordan, who won 52 international caps for Scotland, began his football career in his native country with Morton and ended it at Bristol City ten years later. But it was at Leeds and Manchester United that he made his name, winning a championship medal during his spell at Elland Road. He went on to sample further success when he left Old Trafford in July 1981 to sign for Italian giants AC Milan. Jordan turned his hand to management when he hung up his boots at Ashton Gate and took over the City hot seat a few months later. He steered the West Country outfit to the semi-finals of the League Cup and guided the club to promotion from the old Fourth Division. A spell at Hearts was followed by a stint with Stoke City before he returned to Ashton Gate in 1994, only to part company with the Robins three years later. His last job was assistant to Lawrie McMenemy in the Northern Ireland set-up, which he left last year.

He said: “I’ve been out of football since November last year but I did want to get back in to the game. It is going to be a challenge but am delighted and enthusiastic and I can’t wait to get started.”

More On Joe

Now Joe Jordan has a job back in West Yorkshire it was good to hear him talking about Leeds United v Milan on BBC Radio Leeds before the 1-1 draw in the UEFA Champions League, which saw both teams qualify for the next stage. Though Joe played for both sides during his long career, he wanted Leeds to win (I should think so) mainly because he has friends in the area still. Joe spoke of the injustice of losing to A.C. Milan in the 1973 final of the Cup Winner's Cup when he believed Leeds were the better team on the night. A dodgy referee that day swayed the outcome, of course.
