Yorath Sentanced

Terry Yorath (Leeds United Youth) has been sentanced after a conviction for drink driving.

http://news.bbc.co.uk reports:

Ex-Leeds United and Wales football star Terry Yorath has narrowly avoided jail after driving into a pedestrian and breaking her pelvis while drunk.

Yorath appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court for sentencing on Tuesday after pleading guilty to drink-driving and careless driving on 3 August.

He received a 12-month rehabilitation order, with 60 hours of community punishment, and a 30-month driving ban.

District Judge David Kitson said he believed Yorath, 54, was "truly sorry".

He was fined £500 and ordered to pay £40 costs.

Police co-operation

Judge Kitson said he was "just able" to avoid imposing a sentence because of Yorath's personal circumstances, after hearing how his 15-year-old son Daniel had died of a heart attack, and he had split from his wife Christine.

"You have had to cope with tragedy in your life but your behaviour on this occasion, which is recognised in this report, could also have inflicted tragedy and heartbreak on another family, namely that of your young victim," the judge said.

"The combination of these offences aggravated each other and I am quite satisfied that the custodial threshold has been crossed.

"However, I am required to carry out a balancing act and consider personal mitigation - the fact you stopped immediately after the accident, gave assistance to the young girl, cooperated with police and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity."

Distinguished career

He noted Yorath had played an active role in a number of charities.

Yorath, the father of TV presenter Gabby Logan, was arrested on 24 June following an accident on Harrogate Road in Leeds.

27-year-old call centre worker Raziya Aslam was knocked down and suffered a broken pelvis and head injuries.

Police found 120 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of Yorath's breath. The maximum permitted level is 35 micrograms.

He won 59 Welsh caps as a player and managed the Wales national side for five years in the 1990s.

A statement from Huddersfield Town football club, where he is assistant manager under Peter Jackson, said the matter had now been dealt with.

"Terry is a big part of Huddersfield Town Football Club and he will continue to be so in his role as assistant manager to Peter Jackson," it read.

Mathias Returns, Moss Leaves !

Ray Mathias (Tranmere Rovers) has returned to a managerial role with Chester City, following the shock resignation of Mark Wright. Mark, the former England international defender, had been manager of Chester City since January 2002, and saw them promoted back into League football, a level they lost in 2000. He did not give comments as to the reasons.

Along with Mark, David Moss (Swindon Town) departs also. David had only joined as Mark's assistant manager on 27 May, 2004, and it the first time this site has caught up with him since his departure as manager of Macclesfield Town in October 2003. He was not actually in post for a full level match.

Ray Mathias has become the caretaker-manager, but is tipped to become the full manager. The last time Bob 70-71 site reported on Ray it was following his dismissal as manager of Tranmere Rovers in September 2003.

BBC Wright leaves Chester

NB Ray converted to the role of Director of Football on 28 August, 2004, following the appointmnet of Ian Rush as manager. Ian brings in Mark Aizlewood - brother to Steve Aizlewood, as his new assistant manager. Mark had been coach at Welsh Premier League side, Carmarthen Town

Addison Leaves

Colin Addison (Sheffield United) has left as Director of Football at Barry Town of the Welsh League Division One, just one week before the new season was due to begin. Colin did not comment much on the reasons other than to say that he did not have another post lined up and he had disagreements with the club.

Bob 70-71 Pages last caught up with Colin at Forest Green Rovers where he was manager from September to December 2003. Colin joined Barry Town in February 2004, but was unable to prevent their relegation last season.

Colin's first match in charge at Barry Town was against Carmarthan Town (14 February 2004) and I see from his match notes that Mark Aizlewood - brother to Steve Aizlewood, is currently the coach there. See Sons and Daughters: Brothers.

Peter Taylor Returns

Peter Taylor (Southend United) has returned to his role as the England Under-21 manager, a role he last held between 1996-1999. It follows the dismissal of David Platt. Peter will continue his role as manager of Hull City, whom he helped promote into the newly named League One last season.

BBC SPORT Taylor returns to U21 role reports:

Taylor was in charge of the Under-21s from August 1996 to July 1999 before being replaced by Howard Wilkinson, despite a record of 14 victories, six draws and three defeats from his 23 matches.

He took charge of the senior team for the friendly against Italy in November 2000 following Kevin Keegan's resignation and made David Beckham captain for the first time.

Hull chairman Adam Pearson said: "Peter's involvement with the FA brings great prestige to Hull City and we feel sure that is will be a successful arrangement for all parties.

"We are confident that Peter can undertake these additional England Under-21 fixtures and successfully manage Hull in the forthcoming season."

Taylor's appointment comes amidst a reshuffle of coaching responsibilities at the FA with Sammy Lee joining as a full-time national coach.

King Otto 1 Scolari 0

In one of the biggest shocks in the history of major football international tournaments, Greece beat the host nation, Portugal 1-0 in the final of Euro 2004 at the Stadium of Light in Lisbon.

For Bob's 70-71 Pages this was a battle between Brazilian, Luiz Felipe Scolari the Portugal coach and German, Otto Rehhagel the coach of Greece. Both were players in the 70-71 season, Scolari for Clube Esportivo Aimoré, and Rehhagel for F.C. Kaiserslauten. Whoever was victorious, it was going to be the first time that a foreign coach had won the competition. Scolari came as the coach who won the most recent World Cup with Brazil in 2002.

Before the match began, the television pundits at the BBC reflected the mood of neutrals by unanimously predicting a Portugese victory. Greece's tenacity and defensive work was praised at half-time, but the score was still 0-0 and few predictions had changed. Then in the 57th minute the Greeks won their first corner. Angelis Basinas crossed and Angelos Charisteas scored !

In retrospect it is difficult to understand why people gave the Greeks so little hope, they had afterall already beaten Portugal in the opening match, drawn with fancied Spain, beaten the then current holders of the cup, France, and many people's favourites the Czech Republic. But every victory had been assessed as the Greek's greatest, it was never conceived possible that they could surpass themselves in the next match.

But when the score went to 1-0 in that 57th minute, people started to believe the impossible could actually happen. Throughout the campaign the country had won by maximising the minimum required. The group stage was almosted fluked, they even lost to the Russians in their final group match ! The quarter- and semi- final stages were won by a solitary goal. The only time Greece scored 2 goals in the competition it had been necessary for a one goal lead...

And sure enough it was to be a third successive 1-0 victory that saw them through.

Otto Rehhagel was in tears at the end of the match after his greatest achievement as a coach. Brazilian legend Pelé had handed Scolari the World Cup in 2002, but in 2004 Portugal's legend Eusebio, had only a consolatory hug to offer him as runner-up.

For now, 'King Otto' rules !

Ranieri Swaps Jobs

Rarely has a sacking been so forewarned as Claudio Ranieri (AS Roma )'s departure from Chelsea. So much so that on the last home game of the season versus Leeds United, Claudio did a farewell lap of honour - whilst still in post !

Though it was Chelsea's highest League finish since the Championship year in 1954-55, and their highest ever Premiership placing, as well as their first ever European Cup / Champions League semi-final, it was not good enough for the club that Roman Abramovich has thrown his millions at.

Abramovich entered The Sunday Times' 'Rich List 2004 ' in number one position, with an estimated wealth of 7,500,000,000 pounds, making him the 6th richest person in Europe and 22nd in the World.

Hence, he is in the financial position to make Chelsea his non-fantastical version of a fantasy football team, and he is in a fairly good position to be disappointed with not winning a trophy this season. Chelsea fans, however, remain utterly bewildered and hope it's not all just some fabulous dream.

Ranieri's Chelsea Record
2000-01:
6th
2001-02:
6th, FA Cup runner's up
2002-03:
4th
2003-04:
2nd

Claudio milked his departure for all it was worth, with his bumbling, happy-go-lucky, Anglo-Italian patter and puppy dog eyes. Mindful that his soon to be ex-employers still needed to negotiate his compensation, he kept a dignified silence on the subject of his sacking.

This finally came on 1 June 2004, and by 8 June 2004 he had walked straight into the job at 2004 UEFA Cup Winners and Spanish Champions, Valencia, a post vacated by Rafael Benitez, who had moved to Liverpool to replace Gerard Houllier.

Meanwhile, Chelsea had replaced Claudio with Jose Mourinho, who won the Champions League - the pinacle achievement for a club side - with Porto in 2004.

BBC SPORT Valencia appoint Ranieri reports:

Valencia appoint Ranieri

"Ranieri has signed for two seasons with an option to extend the deal for another one," said a club spokesperson.

The Italian returns to the Spanish club for his second spell after coaching the side between 1997-1999.

"At last I've come home, I'm very happy and look forward to coaching Valencia once more," said Ranieri, who replaces Liverpool-bound Rafael Benitez.

He added: "When (Valencia general manager) Manuel Llorente asked me if I wanted to return, I said I'll come swimming. From London or from Rome."

"I have always had my heart here and the hope of returning. This is my home - I still have my (Valencia) ID card because I knew I'd be back one day."

Ranieri's replacement Hector Cuper led Valencia to two Champions League finals - both of which ended in defeat.

Then Benitez took over and won the 2001-2002 and 2003-2004 Primera Liga titles as well as the Uefa Cup.

Ranieri said: "I left Valencia at a good moment, then Hector Cuper came and worked very well while Benitez did a great job.

"It is hard to follow, but I accept the challenge. I like to work hard and I am certain to say I will continue that.

"Rafa Benitez put together a great squad and I know a lot of the players who were with me. I have a good relationship with the technical staff and I am happy with everything and certain we will work well."

Ranieri will be able to make his own signings following the departure of director of sport Garcia Pitarch - after Benitez left in protest at that system.

During his previous spell at Valencia, Ranieri guided the club to victory in the King's Cup and a first qualification for the Champions League in his final season in charge.

Left to join Atletico Madrid in 1999.

He joined Atletico Madrid immediately after the Cup victory, but his tenure at the club was cut short when they went into administration during his first season in charge.

Ranieri then moved to take over at Chelsea in September 2000 after the departure of Gianluca Vialli.

The Leaving of Liverpool

Following the departure of Gerard Houllier last May, and the subsequent appointment of Rafael Benitez as his replacement, Phil Thompson (Liverpool) has left Liverpool - for the third time. BBC SPORT Liverpool Thompson leaves Liverpool has this news item and profile ...

Liverpool have parted company with assistant manager Phil Thompson.

Thompson's exit comes following the appointment of Rafael Benitez as Liverpool's new manager after Gerard Houllier was sacked in May.

The 50-year-old became Houllier's right-hand man when the Frenchman took sole charge in November 1998.

"Following talks between Rafael Benitez and Phil it has been decided that Phil will leave the club," chief executive Rick Parry told the club's website.

Thompson has had three spells at Liverpool, having made 477 first-team appearances as a player and a stint as reserve team manager.

Thompson Factfile:

1954: Born in Liverpool on 21 January
1971: Makes league debut for Liverpool aged 17
1983: Wins last of his 42 England caps against Greece
1984: Joins Sheffield United after 477 games for Liverpool where he won seven league titles, two European Cups, a Uefa Cup, one FA Cup and two League Cups
1986: Returns to Liverpool as reserve team coach
1992: Sacked as Liverpool reserve team coach by Graeme Souness
1998: Appointed assistant manager of Liverpool under Gerard Houllier
2004: June 18 - leaves Liverpool following the appointment of Rafael Benitez as manager

Parry added: "All the discussions were conducted in a totally amicable manner and Phil leaves with our very best wishes for the future.

"I want to thank Phil for all his hard work over the past six years as he played a major part in the successes we enjoyed during that period.

"We will obviously be sitting down now with Rafa to discuss his backroom team and will make further announcements in due course."

Thompson's departure concludes his second stint as a coach at Anfield.

After leaving the club as a player after the European Cup success of 1984 he returned as reserve team boss two years later.

He enjoyed notable success in that role but was sacked by then manager Graeme Souness in 1992.

Houllier brought him in to help motivate his team after taking sole charge of the club from Roy Evans in 1998.

Sam Ellis Joins Leeds United

The new manager of Leeds United, Kevin Blackwell, has chosen Sam Ellis (Sheffield Wednesday) as his assistant manager. Sam had been Stan Ternent's (Carlisle United) number two at Burnley for six years, but was sacked at the end of May following a very poor year for the club at the bottom end of Division One.

Prior to this Sam has been manager of Blackpool 1982-89, Bury 1989-90, and Lincoln 1994-94, and Kevin has previously played under Sam's mangement.

Brooking Knighted

Trevor Booking is to be knighted ! BBC SPORT Brooking gets knighthood reports ...

Brooking's honour comes in recognition of his years in sports administration as an outspoken former chairman and vice-chairman of Sport England, as well as his football career.

Now the FA's director of football development, the former BBC pundit said: "This is a wonderful honour and a huge privilege.

"My whole life has been about sport, as a footballer, as a broadcaster and as an administrator.

"The only sad thing is that my mum and dad passed away in 1997 and 1998.

"I'm from an old East End family and they would have been chuffed to bits by this - it was not something we could ever have envisaged when I was growing up."

The award was somewhat controversial as many felt it should have come earlier.

Brooking was fiercely critical of the Government's funding of sport during his four years as chairman of Sport England.

He left under a cloud in October 2002 without the knighthood that had been awarded to his predecessors immediately after leaving office.
