| Bob 70-71 | March 2003 NewsNews of other stars from the 1970-71 season 29 March Machin Caretaker Manager Mel Machin (Gillingham), who began the season as Director of Football at Bournemouth, has taken over as the caretaker manager of Huddersfield Town following the sacking of their manager, Mick Wadsworth. Huddersfield Town fans are having a rough time of it at present, with the club at the bottom of Division Two, and in serious financial trouble. Tantalisingly, the club had recently pulled out of the relegation zone, only to slip back to the bottom with seven games to go. Now they are in danger of losing touch with fellow strugglers in an incredibly tight division, which sees just 5 points separating the bottom 7 clubs. Most fans would trade their place in the division for survival from administration, as no buyer has come forward to rescue the club. Debts are high, assets low, the players are unpaid, and the Chairman, David Taylor, has to contend with constant organised protests to kick him out of the club. Mick Wadsworth took over from Lou Macari (Celtic) in July 2002, and was already sacked once in January, but had to be re-instated because there was no money to compensate him ! This re-sacking has come after a spell of no win in five games, and the club are 3 points adrift of relegation survival. Mel came over the club in January as Mick's assistant manager, and will remain in charge in the caretaker role till the end of the season. See BBC SPORT Football Teams
Huddersfield Town Terriers snap up Machin 18 March F.A. Cup Draw The semi-fianl draw forthe F.A.Cup this month was done by Bob 70-71 Star, Sven-Göran Eriksson (Karlskoga). 11 March Wilkinson Out Howard Wilkinson has been sacked as the manager of Sunderland, after just 20 matches, only 2 of which were victories.Sadly, Howard was never popular with the Sunderland fans, who were expecting a bigger name to replace Peter Reid, who had been the manager for 8 years. Peter had been popular, but was the victim of not bringing major competition success to Sunderland, hence the fans were hoping for someone who would. In the event Howard's team never got going. He was criticised for not having recent Premier League experience and being old fashioned. Perhaps the lowest day of his time in charge was on 1 February 2002, when the team lost 1-3 at home to Charlton Athletic and all three Charlton goals were scored by Sunderland players. Howard sounded genuinely hurt by the sacking, but there was a sense that his optimisim that Sunderland could avoid the drop to Division One sounded less and less realistic and more like a person who was just burying his head in the sand. Whilst the club are not much worse off in the League than when he took over, most fans will be pleased that even if the club do end up going down, at least Howard has gone. Former Republic of Ireland manager, Mick McCarthy has been appointed to replace Howard, but his job will be a desparate one. The team are bottom, and 7 points adrift of relegation safety with just 9 matches to play. 2 March Ferguson Finalist Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United failed in their bid to win their first cup since the Premiership title of 2000-2001. Man U have gained a reputation of not taking the Worthington (League) Cup seriously over the past few years, and it may reflect the club's growing desparation to get some silverware in the cabinet, that this season the club not only fielded top selections for each match, but reached the final v Liverpool to boot. Played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Man U never really looked like winning, in a competition that they have only ever won the once in 1992. A comfortable 2-0 victory by Liverpool meant that Mancheater United have now been runners-up in the competition in 4 out of 5 finals, the others being in 1983, 1991 and 1994.
