Toshack Out

On 28 January 2003, John Toshack (Cardiff City) resigned from his post as manager of the Serie B Italian side, Catania. John was just 3 months at the club, a period that included just 10 games. John leaves after falling out with the club President, Riccardo Gaucci, whom John reportedly believes unfairly criticised his team.

The club based in Sicily are just one point ahead of relegation zone. The team won 4 and lost 6 in John's ten game spell in charge.

Thanks to Ian King's site for bringing this to my notice.

Williams Returns

Whilst scanning Ian King's site, I see that Bill Williams (Gillingham) has re-entered football management. Bob's 70-71 Pages last heard of Bill at Dover Athletic then in the Conference, where he was Director of Football.

Dover were finally relegated in bottom position, and in May of last year, Bill moved to Welling United of the Dr Martin's Premiership Division. Last season Welling finished 15th out of 22, and so far this season the club look like holding thier mid-table position.

Furious Fergie Attacks Beckham

Sir Alex Ferguson made the front and back page headlines again this yesterday following his alleged after match assault on his players.

Sir Alex was so incensed with Man U's tepid display in the 5th Round of the FA Cup, which resulted in a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal, that he supposedly kicked a boot, which in turn hit David Beckham in the face above his right eye. Initially this was reported to have required two stiches to repair, though this was later denied.

Rumours that Beckham fans world wide, have imitated the surgical stitch-look right down to colour of thread and tying-off knot used, were completely invented by this website.

Sir Alex has just negotiated a five year extention to his contract subject to regular anger management sessions with Exeter co-Chairman, Uri Geller. Sorry I can't help myself today, I made that last detail up, too.

It's Only Just Begun

No sooner is Barry Fry's (Bedford Town) place on the site confirmed than he appears on the comedy sports quiz show, 'They Think It's All Over'. Barry was his usual cheeky-chappy self, and knew all his answers, too !

Likewise, Sven-Göran Eriksson (Karlskoga) in the form of an animated character was included in the Series Two 'Best Of..2DTV' last week.(See www.2DTV.co.uk) Sven-Göran was shown trying to compile a super England player out of bits of other players and using Martin Keown of Arsenal for the Frankenstein monster style head. Rather like England it fell apart during the match.

Next Generation star, Michael Owen was in the same programme in a sketch where Sven-Göran had wrapped him up in special packaging to prevent his injury before the World Cup. He's injured after one goal.

Another comedy TV appearance was that of Graham Taylor (Lincoln City), commenting on the England 3-1defeat to Australia. Graham himself was serious enough, he is seen less often doing television commentry now that he's back as a manager of Aston Villa. England on the other hand were a joke, and I mention this item only to give my many Australian visitors a reason to laugh at England's expense.

Shortlisted

Congratulations to Eamon Dunphy for the shortlisting of his book written with Manchester United star, Roy Keane. The book called simply 'Keane' has been shortlisted for both the Butler and Tanner Book of the Year, and for the Chrysalis Biography of the Year at the British Book Awards. People can vote for the book themselves at British Book Awards. See a review of the book at November 2002

Teams Confirmed

A combination of reading Barry Fry's book 'Big Fry' and searching some old football programmes now means - after goodness knows how long, that he was a Bedford Town player in 1970-71, so at last I can welcome him officially to the site.

Meanwhile a quick scan of Sven-Göran Eriksson's biography by Joe Lovejoy, shows 1970-71 was the season he joined up with Tord Grip for the first time. Tord was the player manager of the Swedish Second Division side, Karlskoga.

Although it is still not absolutely certain where he was at the start of the English 70-71 season, Karlskoga is much more likely to be an accurate placement on this site - not Degerfors as previously reported. Now very boringly, this means I'm going to have to update every link that includes Sven-Göran, as if I didn't have better things to do with my life...
