Tommy Taylor Sacked

As usual it takes a sacking to come to the attention of this site... Today Darlington sacked Bob 70-71 star Tommy Taylor (Orient) having won just 3 of the first 14 games of the season. The club are presently 20th in Division Three. Tommy was in post a year, and won only 15 of the 53 games played under his reign. Darlington finished 15th last season.

October is a month of moves for Tommy. In his last post Tommy had been manager of Leyton Orient for nearly 5 years, before swapping to Darlington on 25 October 2001. In 1970-71 Tommy had been an Orient player at the start of the season, but after over 100 games for the club he moved in October 1970 to West Ham United, a club went on to play 340 League games for.

He later returned to Orient as a player for a second 100 + game spell, and went on to become their manager from November 1996 to 15 October 2001.

Howard Returns to Premiership

Never one to pass on unexpected news until it's old hat ... Bob 70-71 Star, Howard Wilkinson was the shock replacement as Sunderland manager following the sacking of Peter Reid. The post will not be an easy one.

Peter was one of the Premiership's longest surviving managers having been appointed in March 1995. But there has been a feeling that Peter did not have what it takes to make the club anything more than Premiership also rans.

Relegated in 1969-70, the 70-71 season was the first of six in the Second Division (modern Division One) for Sunderland. And things got worse before they got better with a trip to the old Division Three in 87-88. So Peter was seen as a hero when he took the club to the Premiership for the first time in 1996-97.

With patience unheard of in English football, Peter was even allowed a relegation and a missed promotion, before returning Sunderland to the top League in1999-2000. But now the ambitions of the club have changed. With a fabulous new stadium, Sunderland averaged a crowd of over 45,000 last season, the third best in England, yet finished just 17th - the lowest place without being relegated. Hence, the pressure was already on Peter and a poor start this season again leaves the club 17th after 9 games.

So, enter Howie... not an obvious choice by any means. Most recently he has held a post which, though distinguished, had a behind-the-scenes out-of-the-headlines profile. Though Howard caretaker-managed England and won the last ever Division One title before the Premiership began (with Leeds United back in 1991-92), there is a feeling that this is a man with a big future behind him. Let's face it - in strictly marketing terms - Howard just isn't sexy.

Still everyone wrote off Sir Bobby Robson before he began at neighbours Newcastle United, and he won the fans hearts last season. Don't listen to those 'Dour Yorkshireman' jibes. Wilkinson has a sharp, dry wit and is a football intellect, and he's raring to go.

The post Howard leaves behind as Technical Director at the FA has not yet been filled and has itself become a focus of press speculation about it being offered to a non-Englishman.

Taylor Returns

Great to see ex-England caretaker manager and Bob 70-71 Star, Peter Taylor (Southend United) back in management with Hull City. Peter replaces Jan Molby, who was only appointed in April of this year. The club have won just 2 of the opening 12 games and are presently 18th in Division Three.

Hull are reportedly hungry for success - though it is hard to measure what would count as success for Hull City. The club's highest ever League position was 3rd in the old Division Two. In 70-71 Hull had a strong side, which was in the middle of a 12 season stretch in their favourite division - Division Two.

Peter's last manager's post was at Brighton and Hove Albion, and though he won promotion with the side at the end of the season, he resigned after disagreements about the clubs future ambitions. In the meantime Peter has been coaching with Barry Fry at Peterborough United, but had left earlier in the month supposedly to 'fulfil a commitment' in Singapore.

Ferguson - Assault Charges

Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged with indecent assault in South Africa. BBC SPORT Football Ferguson accused of indecent assault reports ...

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is facing an allegation of indecent assault in South Africa.

A woman filed the complaint with Cape Town police following an alleged incident in the early hours of Friday.

Ferguson, 60, has been in South Africa to explore the possibility of Manchester United linking up with the Cape Town Football Academy.

Superintendent Nina Kirsten, spokesperson for the South African Police of West Metropole, told BBC Sport Online: "I can confirm that a complaint of indecent assault has been made against a high-profile British man.

"The complaint was made at approximately 11:00 local time [1000 BST] at our Camps Bay police station.

"The case is currently being investigated, and will be taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions on Monday.

"He will decide then whether charges will be made."

Ferguson's legal representative, Alex Abercrombie, told BBC News 24: "There is an allegation that Sir Alex touched a female on the leg.

"But Sir Alex denies any impropriety.

"He is most upset and very concerned that his family, and Manchester United, have to get embroiled in this."

Ferguson is scheduled to return to England on Sunday.

N.B. 24 October: These charges were swiftly dropped by the South African police - not before a 'Sunday Mirror' exclusive from the women involved appeared. This was debated as a nasty form of cheque-book journalism, as the 'Mirror' exploited the rules, which do not apply to allegations made in foreign countries. The matter has now been taken further to the civil courts, see BBC Football Ferguson could face civil claim
