| Bob 70-71 | December 2001 NewsNews of other stars from the 1970-71 season 25 December Francis Quits Gerry Francis (QPR) has quit as manager of Bristol Rovers. Gerry has only had the job since June of this year and it was his third spell as manager of the club. Gerry has been on compassionate leave due to family illness for three weeks. Rovers are 22nd in Division 3, just 2 points off the bottom place that leads to relegation from League football. Assistant manager Gary Thompson takes over. Gerry Francis - Football365.com 23 December Evans Out Roy Evans (Liverpool squad) has quit as Director of Football at Swindon Town. Roy was apparantly upset at not being allowed more money for the development of the squad. Swindon Town are currently 16th in Division Two. Former jocky, Willie Carson, recently became the club's chairman. See BBC SPORT SWINDON TOWN Evans quits Swindon 21 December Stadiums For All Whilst Peter Lorimer was giving his opinion of the Lee Bowyer story on Radio Five Live (see news), Trevor Brooking was getting even more airtime on the same programme as part of the panal involved with developments of the new Wembley Stadium. The Government minister had just announced that it was all doom and gloom and may or may not result in a stadium at Wembley. Adam Crozier of the FA then came out all upbeat saying there almost certainly would be a stadium. Roll on our Trev, a Londoner himself, who was quite adament there would be a National Stadium and that it would be at Wembley. Trevor was representing 'Sports For All' and was supportive of the new plans for the ability of the stadium to convert to an athletics arena at lest expense than previously believed. 120 million pounds of lottery money is involved, which is why the whole project has been cluttered up with incompetant polititians rather than allowing the sports people to just go ahead and build it ... but Trevor never mentioned that in his speech ... 11 December Advocaat Kicked Upstairs. Living in the shadow of one of Celtic's most successful sides ever has taken it's toll on Dick Advocaat (ADO). He has been suggesting for several weeks that he intended to stand down as manager of REangers after four years, and today he finally did so. The Hibernian manager, Alex McLeish, after repeated denials to the press of his iminent change of post, has now become the new Rangers manager, whilst Dick becomes Director of Football. Advocaat reveals his reasons 10 December BBC Sports Personality 2001 Good to see Sir Alex Ferguson win the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award ceremony. For sports fans in the UK this live television show, that summaries the year in sport is essential viewing. Many would consider it the most important awards show for UK sports, so this is a major honour for Sir Alex. Sven-Göran Eriksson (Karlskoga) was awarded the Coach of the Year Award, quite rightly, too. Sven-Göran was given the award by Sir Bobby Charlton. And in the live telephone vote, for Sports Personality of the Year itself, Michael Owen - Terry Owen's (Bradford City) son - was third, behind yachtswoman, Ellen MacArthur, and winner David Beckham. PERSONALITY Fergie handed new accolade 6 December Francis Returns ! Good to see that Trevor Francis has made a speedy return to management with Crystal Palace in Division One. Francis was sacked by Birmingham City in October, and Crystal Palace found themselves without a manager due to Steve Bruce resigning after only a few months in charge. Bruce had intended to take on the Birmingham City post, but Palace have taken out a court injunction to prevent Bruce from obtaining another job as manager for ten months. Palace were in 6th place when Francis took over,but have since lost their first game in charge under him, which was a home tie against League leaders, Burnley. See BBC SPORT BIRMINGHAM CITY
