| Bob 70-71 | March 2002 NewsFollow the news of the offspring of the class of 70-71 !See Sons and Daughters31 March In brief - I'm out of time, but Steffen Iversen, Michael Owen, Ian Moore and Mark Cooper all got goals in yesterday's matches 30 March International Duties It was good to see four Next Generation stars involved with the mid week internationals. I will lead with the biggest story ... Paul Trollope What an amazing week has been for Paul Trollope - John Trollope (Swindon Town)'s son. A disappointing season with the Premier Division side, Fulham, in which he had not made a solitary appearence, finally ended with a free transfer to Division One side, Coventry City. The move happened on the 22 March 2002, his season's and Coventry City debut was 2 days later in the big Midland clash versus Birmingham City. Both sides are pushing for a Play-Off place, and though Coventry City have the edge in 5th place, they have played 2 games more with only a 2 point advantage, so Birmingham City were probably happier with the 1-1 draw away from home. Then another 3 days later, Paul is winning his 6th cap for Wales ! Paul hasn't played since 6 June 1998. A horrible day in Welsh football history, when they lost 4-0 away to Tunisia - though there has been worse days since. This call up was at home to the Czech Republic, and he replaced Nathan Blake of Wolves in the 62nd minute. Though the match finish a 0-0 draw, the media hyped the game into a famous er, non-defeat for the Welsh. I suspect Paul has been granted an International career thanks to the separate International status of Wales, oh but if only the English and Welsh could combine so we could have Ryan Giggs !!! Anyway, well done Paul ! See BBC SPORT WORLD CUP 2002 Wales
hold Czechs in check Scott Gemmill Not such a dream week for Scot, however. Scot - Archie Gemmill (Preston N.E.)'s son - has been in the Scotland squad for a while now, but it was September last year since he last came off the bench and played. Scot was, however, again chosen for what was Berti Vogts first ever game in charge of the Scottish National side versus France. With the score 4-0 down to the World Cup and European Football Champions Cup holders in front of an 80,000 French crowd, the prospects at half time did not look good. This is the point Scot entered the fray, and the fact that the Scottish only lost 5-0 in the end, could have been a minor achievement for him ... Nevertheless, things took a turn for turn for the worse two days later when he played for Everton in a 6-2 defeat away to Newcastle United in the Premier League. See BBC SPORT WORLD CUP 2002 Scots pulverised in Paris Michael Owen It has also been a naff month for Michael Owen, who missed three matches with a hamstring injury. He has also now not scored for six matches, his longest barron spell since April last year. But to top it all his 33rd game for England ended in defeat thanks to the last kick of the game. Surprisingly this is Michael's first international since he scored in successive World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Albania in September last year. He has taken no part in the three draws since then. Michael only played in the first half at Elland Road versus Italy, which was a very dull 0-0. In the second half Robbie Fowler scored in front of his home crowd to make it 1-0, but Italy were the stronger side and won 2-1 - the winner being an injury time penalty. Elsewhere, Micheal's media presence remains high. There's a new Sporties advert being played lots on national television, and JJB Sports have a TV advertising campaign featuring the new England away shirt, in which Michael's picture is largely featured. Also the new Merlin stickers for England 2002, features Michael as one of three England players on the front cover of the book and picture packets. See BBC SPORT WORLD CUP 2002
Eriksson remains positive Frank Lampard As with Michael Owen above, Frank Lampard played in only the first half of the England v Italy match. Although it is his sixth international, it was only his second start. It was the 3rd England match in a row that the Chelsea star has played, but you have to go back to February last year since he was involved in an England victory. Frank's half was a 0-0 draw, but the team lost the match 1-2. See BBC SPORT WORLD CUP 2002
Eriksson remains positive Cooper Scores - To No Avail ! Mark Cooper managed another two goals - both penalties, but both matches ended as 2-1 defeats ! Forest Green seem to be making life difficult for themselves as they slip to 16th in the Conference.
Moore Scores - First For Fourteen Matches Burnley have slipped to fourth, so the game against Preston North End was a six pointer for a play-off position.
See http--www.burnleyfootballclub.com- 17 March Grimsby Town Update ! Well the Grimsby Town / Next Generation connection continues unabated! Andy Todd remains on a month's loan from the Premiership side Charlton Athletic, where he joined Bradley Allen, who is in his third season at the club. With a further three goals from the pair so far this month the club has dramatically soared up from 22nd place in Division One to the relegation safety zone of 21st place !!!. Last month, I reported the unusual situation of a Next Generation double strike as Grimsby convincingly beat the stranded bottom placed side, Stockport County. Well as chance would have it, the same thing happened in the very next game in a classic home victory against promotion play-off hopefuls, Crytal Palace. But the cherry on the cake is Andy's away goal stunner against second place Wolves, which over-turned the form books with Grimsby Town winning !
See Grimsby Town Football Club Lampard Scores - As Chelsea Hit Form ! Well as a Leeds United fan, you can imagine I'm a little naffed off that Chelsea have decided to hit the accelerator pedal, just as the Leeds side struggle to locate the clutch ... or something. Anyway, Next Generation star, Frank Lampard has been involved in three consecutive 4-0 victories in a week by Chelsea - two in three days against the hapless Tottenham Hotspur, and then again yesterday against Sunderland. Chelsea are fifth ahead of Leeds United (in 6th), and look favourites to snatch the fourth Champions League place, if Bobby Robson's Newcastle United continue to slip up.The top three of Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal look pretty unreachable at this stage. Frank has scored twice this month so far ...
See The Official Chelsea FC Website - Home Page Cooper Scores - Three Games in a Row ! Mark Cooper made it four goals in three games at the beginning of the month, as a double strike gave a great away victory against Woking. Forest Green are now 14th in the League and look certain to finish mid-table.
Gilzean Update
Special thanks to Jason Bochel for sending me three new Ian Gilzean pictures (including the one above), which I have added to his page. Huge thanks to for that. Of course you must visit his site at Elgin City F.C... There's one more goal from Ian to catch up on.
See Elgin City F.C. Andy Gray Scores - First for 2001/2 Andy Gray has left it late in the season to score his first of the season. Andy's appearances have been limited to just 15 games so far, 13 of which have been in the League. Nottingham Forest are 14th and VERY mid-table. They are unlikely to be in any other division next season, which would be seen as an achievement by some, due to the club's current poor financial situation. Like Grimsby Town, reported above, there are two Next Generation stars at Forest, as Nicky Summerbee - Mike Summerbee's son, has been playing for the club, too.
See Nottingham Forest Football Club Owen Cover Yet again, Michael Owen's picture was on the front cover of 'Match'. On the 2 March edition, Michael is shown in an England shirt and the cover is easy to confuse with the 9 February edition. Michael has missed the last two matches of the season with a hamstring injury, but hopes to be back during the coming week versus AS Roma in the Champions League. Michael
