Grimsby Town Update !

Grimsby Town has become a hotbed of Next Generation players ! Andy Todd has moved on a month's loan from the Premiership side Charlton Athletic. He joins Bradley Allen, who is in his third season at the club. Presently the club is struggling in 22nd place of Division One. This led to the unusual situation of a Next Generation double strike as Grimsby convincingly beat the stranded bottom placed side, Stockport County.

The Official website today has a question/answer session with Bradley Allen, see Grimsby Town Football Club. Here's some of his answers ...

Will you be staying with us next season?

Bradley Allen: I sincerely hope so. At the present time there hasn’t been any formal talks or a contract off as such, but I’m hopeful that that will come in the next few weeks if I can continue to perform, and I’ll be more than happy to stay and continue to play for the club.

What do you think of the rumour about you going to Scunthorpe?

That was speculation in recent weeks. As it stands the Manager has stated that he’s not prepared to let me go, especially after the sad and unfortunate injury to Martin, so as things stand I’ll be here for the near future anyway.

What would you like to do after you have finished playing football?

I think about that every day, especially as I’m now in my thirties. I’m preparing for that. I hope to stay in football. I’ve been coaching here at Grimsby for the last four or five months, with some of the junior teams to get my coaching qualifications. That’s something that appeals to me. I like to work with the younger players, to put something back into the game, and encourage the younger element.

Do you think that we are jinxed with injuries and sendings off, or do you believe there’s no such thing?

That’s a very good question.

I think all teams go through it, and when your luck’s down, you get a real knock back with a spate of injuries. We thought we were turning the corner after a fantastic start, and then all of a sudden we lost Macca, Stacy, and it really affects a club like this because they can’t carry the strength in depth. And it’s the experienced players that mean so much to Grimsby. If you can get a blend of experience and youth, it gives the team a chance.

But as for the jinx I don’t believe in it.

Lawson Scores Again !

Ian Lawson was on the winning side for his first time in 8 games, when he got the winner versus fellow strugglers, Bournemouth. The win helped Bury to leap frog Bournemouth in the League, but the League position is just one of their problems. This week the club went into administration and 300,000 to 400,000 pounds is required pronto to make sure that the side can complete their fixtures this season.

Goalies Update.

I don't usually have any goals to report for goalkeepers amongst the Next Generation players, so here's a bit of an update for some of the site's goalies...

Ian Walker v Andy Oakes

Leicester City v Derby County: - Bob's 70-71 Pages was quite anticipated this fixture, which matched two Next Generation Goalkeepers - but it proved a disaster ! The game between the Premiership's bottom two teams, saw Ian Walker -Mike's son (Watford) - versus Andy Oakes - Alan's nephew (Manchester City).

However, after 32 minutes with scores level at 0-0, Andy was injured and had to be replaced by Patrick Foletti, who had only signed from Lucerne as cover the day before ! Then in a disasterous second half, Ian Walker, who is presently the England number five, let in 3 goals as the club slumped to yet another defeat, which keeps them 8 points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership !

The good news is that despite being knocked out for thirty seconds, after a collision with Leicester City's James Scowcroft, tests show there is no permanent damage to Andy's head, and he is back in training again. In spite of the away victory, Derby County remain four points away from relegation safety.

Micheal Oakes

Meanwhile, Andy Oakes' cousin, Michael Oakes - Alan's son (Manchester City) ...er, that was complicated ... is riding high at the top of Division One with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Although the club have played two games more than second placed Manchester City, they do have a five point advantage with ten games to go. They also have a ten point advantage over third placed West Bromwich Albion, so automatic promotion to the Premiership looks a possibility.

Michael has had 14 clean sheets in the League this season, and back in September/October Michael played 6 whole matches without letting in a goal !

Jonathan Gould

Jonathan Gould - Bobby's son (Wolverhampton Wanderers) - has been in the reserves at Celtic this year, but has yet to let in a goal in his two games ! In fact his two games were both big victories for Celtic, as was involved in Celtic's 8-0 victory at home to Stirling in the Scottish FA Cup, and in the 5-0 away victory versus Alla in the Scottish League Cup.

Cooper Scores - Two More

Lampard Capped

Well done to Frank Lampard for winning his fifth England cap away to the Dutch last night. Frank came on in the 77th minute as a replacement for the equalising goalscorer, Vassell, but was unable to make much impression on the game by this point. The score finished 1-1.

Owen Update

Michael Owen had to miss the England match against the Dutch last night due to a knee injury, but according to Liverpool's official website he is going to be back for the next Liverpool match in Europe against Galatasaray of Turkey.

Once again Michael's picture was on the front cover of 'Match', but then he generally is ! On the 9 February edition, Michael is in an England shirt with the heading, 'New England ! Move Over Grandads - the kids want your shirts !'

In the Premier League Liverpool have been on fantastic form and have rose to the top on goal difference for one night until Man chester United took back over. Michael has now scored in both the last two games...

Iverson Update

Steffen Iverson won his 19th cap for Norway last night, though his side lost away to Belgium 1-0. Tanghe of Belgium scored in the 82 nd minute to win the game. Steffen played only until the 58th minute when he was replaced by Roar Strand. This was Steffen's fourth cap since the season began.

In the meantime, Steffen's scored three goals that I've not reported ! The first two were from last month.

Cruyff Scores ! - First of the Season.

I thought I would check out how the former Manchester United star, Jordi Crruff was getting on half expecting I would be reporting a barrage of goals. Well far from it. The Alavés team have struggled to score at all this year and Jordi has only just scored his first of the season having played in 20 games to date. Alavés have been knocked out of the Spanish Cup, too.

Brownlie Scores - First in 20 Games

A barron 20 games without a goal finally came to an end for Paul Brownlie as he scored only his second goal of the season and his first in the League. Paul has picked up six yellow cards along the way as Arbroath have clearly struggled to hold their own in the First Division. The club are managed by Paul's Dad, John Brownlie.
