Summerbee Scores !

Nicky Summerbee had an eventful game on Saturday, playing excellently, getting a goal then getting sent off after 76 minutes. The Forest manager is Bob 70-71 Player Paul Hart (Stockport County), who commented on Nicky after the match. The Official site at Nottingham Forest Football Club reports ...

Nottingham Forest boss Paul Hart saluted Nicky Summerbee after his match-winner against Coventry. The former Manchester City and Sunderland star earned Forest a 2-1 win by converting a stunning free-kick midway through the second half ... but then blotted his copybook by being sent-off. Summerbee was dismissed 15 minutes from time after collecting a second yellow card but Forest held on to secure maximum points.

And Hart concentrated on the 30 year old's excellent strike when he spoke to the press after the final whistle. "It was an excellent free-kick," he said. "He had hit the wall with all his previous attempts but got it right on that occasion. One or two people might have thought it was a risk taking on Nicky Summerbee but I never saw it as that. He has done what we expected of him. I can't speak highly enough of him."

Summerbee was dismissed after appearing to push David Thompson - although Hart revealed: "I've not seen the incident on video but Nicky said the lad dived and I've no reason not to believe him."

Forest had to come from a goal behind to clinch their second successive win and Hart added: "It was a tremendous comeback. "Coventry worked exceptionally hard in the first half to stop us playing and to disrupt us. But we matched them in the second half and I think we would have scored more goals if we had retained 11 men."

Well done to Michael Owen, who has become the first English footballer to win the covetted European Footballer of the Year title since Kevin Keegan in the 70's. Michael was the clear winner by 36 points over Raul of Real Madrid. The competition is run by France Football.

See what 'World of Soccer Stars' players Sir Bobby Charlton and Pelé have to say about Michael.

'World Soccer' Winner

There's a couple of Michael Owen stories

a) Michael Owen has made up for some of the disappointment of being placed third in the phone vote as the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year (see news), by being named as 'World Player of the Year' in the monthly magazine 'World Soccer'. He was placed ahead of David Beckham and Real Madrid's Raul.

Liverpool won team of the year and Gerard Houllier ofLiverpool manager of the year, Sven-Göran Eriksson (Karlskoga) was third. This is the first time there has been a clean sweep of the awards by representatives of the same club.

b) Front Cover
On the subject of Michael Owen, I see that he is on the front cover of the most recent 'Shoot ! Monthly', January 2001 edition. I'm not keen enough on the magazine to spent 2 pounds 80 pence on it, but ... I saw he was on the front cover. As I said.

Front Covers

Three next generation stars made magazine covers recently

Jamie Redknapp - Harry Redknapp's son - was on the front of 8 December 2001 edition of 'Match', with the heading 'Red or Dead ! Redknapp's back for Liverpool'.

Frank Lampard - Frank Lampard's son - in extreme close up covered 'The Times' Football Handbook', 8 December 2001 edition, with the heading 'Blue Lamp. What really happened that day in that hotel.'

And what did happen ? Well Frank and his Chelsea mates got a bit loud in the same room as a television was showing the 11 September news. So Frank denies any real wrong doing, but accepts others may have found their behaviour insensitive. He then goes on to bemoan the down side of being a young man who has got it all, like all young footballers who don't know any different do. The article is most notable for an excellent picture of Frank by Paul Trevillion.

Callum Best - George Best's son - was on the front cover of 'The Times Magazine' for 10 November 2001 (that was last month, I know ...) giving his best 'Blue Steel' look.

Callum is the perfect male model with a gene pool that combines Angie Best's beauty and George's abilty to dribble, er, that's not right. Anyway, six pages of the fashion section of the supplement were given over to an interview and photo-shoot of the ruggedly handsome 20 year old. Jamie has been signed up with Marks and Spencer to do the 'Autograph' range for men.

Callum sounds just a little bit whiny about his Dad's inabilty to communicate or say 'I love you' over the years. Though he did have a 45 minute conversation over the phone, recently - the longest ever. Things must have improved, as I notice he's got the same employer as his Dad and step-Mum, who are currently appearing in Marks and Spencer's Xmas advert.

Callum is a big fan of football and it seems that he did have a chance to join Portsmouth when he was 18, but decided that he might just be in his father's shadow. Callum does claim to be his father's son, as he has a bad-boy image, but says he avoids being a bit of a tart with the women, by being his mother's son too, and having a 'caring' side. Ahhh...

Incidentally, the article's photographs were taken by Mike Owen !

Louise

Jamie's wife, Louise - Harry Redknapp's daughter -in-law - according to her official site, is appearing on SMTV every Saturday, through December, whatever SMTV happens to be. She's on with 'Cat', though I don't think this is Peter Bonetti...

Her last single, 'Stuck in the Middle With You' is getting renewed play in Bob 70-71 Villas as it is included on Now That's What I Call Music 50. So far it's been No 1 of the UK's compilation chart for the 3 weeks of it's release, doing a tad better that Louise's own greatest hits compilation, which ducked out of the regular album charts after just 5 weeks. The single of 'Stuck in the Middle...' hung around for a very respectable 9 weeks.
