Owen Scores !!!!!

Hey, well you've got to admire the attempt at the upbeat presentation of the news of England's second 3-2 defeat of the Euro 2000 competition. This time the goalie did partly cause the downfall - and just like 1970, it was the last minute drafted-in-reserve, Nigel Martin, who needlessly gave away one goal at a delicate time.

Michael Owen's goal on the stroke of half time gave England an undeserved 2-1 lead against Romania, when they had initally been one down. England's defence struck back, however, and the better team restored their lead with just a minute to go before the time added on for injuries.

Shearer got his 30th and last ever goal for England, but let's hope Owen and Beckham are the beginnings of the 2002 England World Cup Winning side ! See BBC SPORT EURO2000 ENGLAND Blame us, says Owen and BBC SPORT EURO2000 ENGLAND Late penalty breaks English hearts

Also on the 'Owen scores' front, perhaps you'd like these ? 'Knocked down because England were knocked out', they're available for 2-99 pounds sterling whilst frocks last at Welcome to the England Euro 2000 Website Home for all English soccer fans (Available with Alan Shearer's name also, incidentally ...)

1966 and all that ...

Well not a day to soon, England finally managed to beat Germany for the first time since the World Cup win of 1966 ! Michael Owen was in the team and played until the 53rd minute Shearer goal that gave england their 1-0 victory. Soon afterwards in the 60th minute Owen was taken off in a tactical change in which Liverpool team mate, Steve Gerrard came on as a swap for a striker to a central defender.

The decision was widely praised by the t.v. pundits as a necessary one, and presently no-one's thinking any the less of Owen's position in the team. Indeed, Owen believes he will be sufficiently experienced to take on the role as first striker if and when Shearer does retire after Euro 2000- see Eurofinals 365 England - England. Owen to Euro 2000

Michael Owen's appearance in Euro 2000 has led to a general saturation of his face over pretty much everywhere, not least the 'FourFourTwo' July edition, 'TV Sattelite' June edition, and the 'TVTimes' 17-23 June edition. Plus there's the Nationwide tv advert where he is asked what he'll think about if he has to take a penalty, and he replies - his mortgage, and the Umbro adverts with Alan Shearer which brings us back to the 442 cover and another tv add, the plot of which I haven't bothered to absorb.

In fact you can now even vote for Michael Owen as one of the Top 10 Football Hunks, Jamie Redknapp gets a mention, but Michael is running away in the Under-21 section and is 3rd in the all-comers list.

Jamie and Louise

Jamie Redknapp turned up on the ITV Euro2000 coverage, though criticism in the Sunday Times (18 June 2000) was that his comments were a bit banal, nevertheless not as bad as Dion Dublin's it would seem! Louise, Jamie's wife and hence Harry's (West Ham) daughter-in-law (a new category !!!) was the highest placed English women in 'FHM' magazine's recent quest to find this year's sexiest woman. She was only 9th, but well done anyway, Louise and you would certainly have been in my top 9, too. See UKMIX - Sites - Louise and the following picture is from This is Louise

1970 Revisited !

Michael Owen came off at half-time as England were beaten by Portugal in their first game of Euro 2000. Owen was not being fed the ball, but as Peter Shilton said on tonight's Talk Sport broadcast, 'he looked that little bit nervous and didn't have that zip'. It's uncertain if injury or changed tactics led to the substitution.

Just like the Quarter-Final of the World Cup in 1970, when England were 2-0 they went on to lose 3-2 !!! As a Leeds United fan it would be lovely to blame the goalkeeper again (Arsenal's Seaman got the nod ahead of Leeds United's Nigel Martin), but for me it was the awful defending which was at fault. Sadly Terry Cooper (Leeds United) was not available for today's game ... See BBC SPORT EURO2000 EURO2000 England crushed in five-goal classic

Redknapp Surgery

Jamie's career is in the balance it seems, and a lot now depends on surgery on his knee that he is to have over in the US. Whatever happens, Jamie will not be training again till August and will miss the beginning of the new season. All the best Jamie ... Owen In !!!

Thanks to Stuart Williamson's email, it seems that Bob's 70-71 pages can follow an England player at Euro 2000. Terry Owen's (Bradford City) son Michael is belatedly added to the pages - and of course he's part of Kevin Keegan's squad for the competition. See Michael Owen The Website
