Player of the Year. For once
English players have a good chance of winning this year's
European Player of the Year.Whilst much of the country's
attention has been on David Beckham it is Michael who has
emerged as one of the favourites in Eurpoe as a whole.
This is a
cut down version of the story that appears at Michael Owen - Football365.com
'Give
it to the Little Fella' By Gavin Willacy
Five English players are on
a 50-strong list of candidates for the European
Footballer of the Year Award. But I think Michael
Owen, rather than David Beckham,
Steven Gerrard, Rio
Ferdinand or Paul Scholes should
become the first Englishman to win it since Kevin
Keegan in 1979. Why? Simple. When it mattered, he
delivered.
Two exquisite goals in the
last ten minutes of the FA Cup Final when Arsenal
already had their dancing trousers on. Another two
away to Italian champions-elect Roma in the UEFA Cup.
A stunning hat-trick in a must-win game for England
in Germany. These are just some of the highlights in
a year in which Owen achieved everything he set out
to. His club won a cup treble and qualified for the
Champions League and England reached the World Cup
finals - all of it thanks in huge part to Owen.
He was hardly inconsistent
in run of the mill fixtures either, averaging almost
a goal a game throughout 2001, despite several minor
injuries.
Owen, the Liverpool and
England striker - like Keegan was two years before
lifting his prize while with Hamburg - is among
ten or so serious contenders, Beckham and Real
Madrids Raul for example, for
the Golden Ball award, which is presented by France
Football magazine on December 18. But Owen has done
more in 2001 to deserve it than any of his
competitors.
The prize goes to those
players who have made an outstanding contribution on
the European and world stage. To win it you have to
have completed some or all of a selection of
achievements, including winning your domestic league,
playing in major cup finals and starring for your
country.
When Keggy won 22 years ago,
he got more than twice as many votes as runner-up
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge at a time when German football
was immensely strong.
We should know how they feel
- 22 years is a long time to wait for any major
award for which your best players should be in
contention every year. After all, it is because
English, Spanish and Italian football is watched by
so many people in other European countries that their
stars dominate the nominations.
But it is a symbol of how
our game has improved that ten other non-English
Premiership stars are in top 50. Just five
English-based players got votes when Keegan won it.
Any guesses which current TV
and radio pundit got one vote, putting him in the top
32 and making him the fifth-best Brit in Europe?
It was king of the
fence-sitters Trevor Well... I Mean... Sort
Of Brooking.
Front
Page. Yes he was on the front page of 'Match'
yet again last week, 17 November, 2001. Once again he was
offering them an exclusive interview in which he revealed
'I want to be the best striker in the World'. On the
issue of European Player of the Year, he says,
'Yeah,
it's my ultimate dream to do the job to the best of
my ability, and there's a lot of other people who
want to do the same. I've had a good year and scored
a few goals for Liverpool and England as well. It's
nice when you get recognised and yes, it would be my
ambition to win an award like that.'

Frank
Favouritism
Frank
Lampard junior was acused of being treated favourably by
his Dad, Frank Lampard senior whilst they were both at West
Ham United together. The accusations were made in jest,
however....
BBC SPORT FUNNY OLD GAME
Looking after Lampard reports:
BBC Radio
Five Live's Wright and Bright find out why Frank
Lampard is always on the winning team when his father
is calling the shots.
Frank Lampard
may be enjoying his time at Chelsea, but not having
his dad around does have its disadvantages.
For one thing,
five-a-side matches at Stamford Bridge are certainly
not as easy as they were at West Ham.
It seems that
Lampard's side hardly ever lost the club
kick-arounds, especially when his dad, Frank senior,
was refereeing.
Lampard's
father, also a former Hammer, was one of the backroom
staff at the club until manager Glenn Roeder was
appointed in the summer.
Frank senior
obviously kept a watchful eye over his son while both
of them were on the payroll at Upton Park and proved
that blood is definitely thicker than water.
Lampard might
have to fend for himself these days, but some of his
former team-mates still remember when the talented
midfielder had it all his own way.
He was put on
the spot by another former Hammer Ian Wright during
his BBC Radio Five Live show with Mark Bright on
Saturday.
"Frank
Lampard's dad used to make sure Frank Lampard's
five-a-side team won," joked Wright, who donned
the claret and blue strip in the 1998-1999 season.
"If you
scored a 30-yarder and you weren't on Frank Lampard's
side, his dad would say off-side."
Lampard was not
going to be made fun of that easily and got his own
cheeky quip in.
"Wrighty,
I understand why you're saying that. It's because I
did win most games. It's the way I play," Frank
junior joked.
But, after
former team-mates Rio Ferdinand and Trevor Sinclair
joined in with the ribbing on the mid-morning
phone-in, Lampard had to concede.
"Frankie's
team never had a youth team player on it,"
Ferdinand pointed out.
But Lampard was
not the only player who enjoyed more than his fair
share of winning.
Italian striker
Paolo di Canio, perhaps unsurprisingly, is famed for
throwing a few tantrums when things do not go his
way.
"We
couldn't give a decision against Paolo because he
would walk off," giggled Wright.
Bellamy
Sacked !
Dover
Athletic have sacked Gary Bellamy - Arthur Bellamy (Burnley)'s son- after just five months.
Gary, who up until now had a very good Non-League
management record believes he has been made a scapegoat
for the clubs recent difficulties at boardroom level.
The
Conference League club are struggling for cash and is
presently being run by a four man management team
awaiting for a new person to take the club over. But the
team have not being doing well on the pitch either and
they are presently in the top relegation spot, even after
yesterday's 2-1 away win to Leigh RMI.
Gary is
quoted as saying, 'I had to be sacked as a sacrifice and
I suppose that's football. But I haven't let anyone down
and I haven't done anything wrong ... I know you are
judged by your results, but this is the first time I have
failed anywhere and it will be the last. I'll prove them
wrong at Dover mark my words.'

Lampard
Capped !
Well done
to Frank Lampard - Frank Lampard Senior's Son - , who received
his third cap for England at Old Trafford versus Sweden,
yesterday. Frank came on in the 85th minute, when the
score was already settled at 1-1.
This is
Franks's fouth appearance for England. Frank made his
debut in 1999 versus Belgium, when he started the match.
Since then he has made three substitute appearances, the
last being in August versus the Netherlands. All his
games have been in England, but never once in the same
ground !

Ian Walker
Uncapped !!
Ian Walker
- Mike Walker's (Watford) son - once again made the
bench in the match versus Sweden, but remains uncapped as
he did not play. Ian's cause is not helped by the fact
that his club side, Leicester City, are in the relegation
zone of the Premiership - having recently been bottom.
Ian is
presently England's number 5 goalkeeper, but made the
bench as second substitute goalie due to injuries to both
David Seaman and David James. Still he got to watch the
match for free, eh?
