Owen Out !

Well it's the main story on all the top sites and newspapers so I doubt you need to come here to find it out, but Michael Owen has pulled his hamstring playing for Liverpool on Saturday - a 1-0 victory at home against Tottenham Hotspur. He's certain to miss England's next World Cup qualifier because of it - oo-er ! He'll also miss the Leeds United match, so it's not ALL bad news...

Football365.com reports

A scan on Michael Owen's hamstring injury confirmed the Liverpool striker will miss England's final World Cup qualifier against Greece at Old Trafford on October 6.

The scan revealed a slight tear in the hamstring in Owen's left leg and means Liverpool's top scorer could miss six crucial matches for his club.

It was not the diagnosis that manager Gerard Houllier wanted to hear - he had hoped the injury would only be a pull - but it is certainly not as serious as some of Owen's previous injuries to the same muscle.

However, any hopes that England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson might have had of his leading forward being fit to face the Greeks have now gone.

England, riding high after four Owen goals in their last two qualifiers, need to win at Old Trafford to make sure they top their qualifying group and reach next summer's World Cup finals without having to resort to the play-offs in November.

Houllier said: 'Michael had a scan first thing this morning and it has revealed a small tear in the hamstring on his left leg. It means he will be out for at least three weeks.'

With Liverpool loathe to rush their prize asset back into action too soon and risk the possibility of him breaking down again, it appears Owen will not feature for club or country for the next month.

The loss to Liverpool is therefore considerable. Houllier said after the 1-0 win over Tottenham that perhaps Owen would be back in time for the Premiership game at home to Leeds on October 13, but that is now not an option.

The striker will miss both Champions League games with Dynamo Kiev - at Anfield next Wednesday and away on October 16 - as well as domestic games with Leeds, Newcastle and Leicester plus the Worthington Cup tie at home to Grimsby.

A provisional return date could be the Champions League tie away to Boavista on October 24, or the Premiership game at Charlton the following Saturday

Houllier, keen to avoid putting a date on the player's return, added: 'The first few days are extremely important to the overall treatment of such injuries. And we will be in a better position to judge his recovery time once that has elapsed.'

Lampard - Being a Prat (Allegedly)

Frank Lampard junior has also been in the papers for drunken exploits with fellow Chelsea players.

Football365.com report it thusly...

Four Chelsea players have fined by their club after a drinking binge in a hotel packed with tourists grieving over the US terror attacks.

The incident happened just 24 hours after the attacks and included stripping, swearing and vomiting at the hotel near Heathrow airport, which was full with Americans stranded by flight cancellations.

The News of the World claims the group included Frank Lampard, Jody Morris, John Terry, former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair, and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Chelsea's football game that night against Bulgarian team Levski Sofia had just been called off as a mark of respect for victims of the attacks when the players went on the five-hour binge.

Antonio Parisini, a manager at Heathrow's Posthouse hotel, said: "They were causing lots of noise and knocking things over in the bar and upsetting everyone. They were really drunk."

The players later moved on to the nearby Airport Bowl bowling alley, where they shocked onlookers by diving down the lanes head first.

Chelsea managing director Colin Hutchinson condemned the players' behaviour as "totally out of order" and said they had each been fined two weeks' wages by the club.

The money - more than £100,000 - will be donated to the fund helping families of the victims of the America disaster.

Hutchinson said: "Obviously we are condemning their behaviour by fining them. We have acted very quickly in this matter as we were only told about it last night (Friday).

"Normally we would not tackle disciplinary matters on the day before an important game against Middlesbrough on Sunday. However, because of the seriousness of the matter, we have done it today. In the meeting with the players, we reminded them again of their responsibilities.

"They were loud between themselves but they, like everyone at the club, have been as hurt and moved by what has happened in the United States as anyone else. Their behaviour was totally out of order but there is no way that the players went out, in any shape or form, to insult or abuse anyone."

Moved On !

Several of the Next Generation players have moved recently.

Greg Rioch - Bruce Rioch's son - has moved on from Macclesfield Town. Last season he played a final 17 League Division Three games for the club, scoring in his last match, a 1-1 away draw with Cheltenham in March. Later that same month he was a player for another Division Three team, ShrewsburyTown. It was a free transfer, and he played 8 of the 9 final games of the season.

Paul Macari has been signed up by his father, Lou (Celtic squad), who is the present manager of Huddersfield Town. Paul had only ever played 3 League games, all as substitute, for Stoke City in the 1997-8 season, the season after Lou had left the club under a cloud.

Paul moved on to Sheffield United for two seaons, but did not play. This season so far, Paul has played a further 2 League games as substitute for Huddersield in Division Two, plus a further game as a substitute in the League cup.

Sam Shilton - Peter Shilton's son - moved on the 4 July 2001 from Hartlepool to Kidderminster Harriers of Division Three. It was a free transfer, and Sam has been a regular in the side managed by Jan Molby.

Sent Off !

Frank Lampard was sent off for Chelsea, yesterday in thier 3-2 away victory at Spurs. He's not the first next Generation star to suffer this fate, though. That honour (as far as I have spotted) is held by Darren Ferguson - Sir Alex Ferguson's son - who was sent off for Wrexham versus Colchester United. A Division Two home match, which ended as a 1-1 draw.

Clough For Coventry ?

There is serious speculation that Burton Albion's manager, Nigel Clough -Brian's son (Derby County manager) will replace Gordon Strachen who has just been sacked by Coventry City. Nigel is often touted as a possible contender, but being a top Midlands club, perhaps this time Nigel will be chosen. See BBC SPORT COVENTRY CITY  Clough linked to Coventry

Owen Scores - England Top Their Qualifying Group !

England's second World Cup Qualifier in a week versus Albania played in Newcastle's St James' Park, proved a more difficult game than the Germany walkover.

Playing 11 men at the back, Albania was always going to be a difficult team to beat. England were riding high after the unexpected victory against the Germans, and stood a chance of going top of the qualifying group. Anything less than a victory, though, would have made the 5-1 win the previous Saturday meaningless. And there was high risk of the England team being affected by excessive cockiness or just plain tiredness.

So the pressure was up. Almost 45 minutes into the game it was looking desparate, and English fans, who were just begining to think, 'help!', needn't have worried. Michael Owen runs through and scores once again, and just before half time at that. England finally won the game 2-0.

England now top the qualifying group and that leaves only the home match against Greece to go. The Englsih need to get as many points as Germany do in their final match at home to Finland to qualify for the World Cup Finals (well as long as Germany don't beat the Finns by a huge goal differance that is).

Well done Michael, well done England.

Other World Cup News

Nigel Martyn England's number two goalkeeper, had to return to his club, Leeds United due to injury in training after the match against Germany. This meant England brought Ian Walker of Leicester City - Mike Walker's son (Watford) - into the squad for the Albanian match.

Neither he nor Frank Lampard of Chelsea - Frank Lampard Senior's son - were called up from the squad to play or sit on the bench for either match.

Scot Gemmill - Archie Gemmill's son (Preston NE)- was called up from the Scotland squad as substitute for both of their qualifiers versus Croatia (0-0 at home) and Belgium (2-0 away defeat). Scot's team Everton were top of the English Premier League at the time, but he didn't get on to the field of play.

Norway had a difficult 3-2 victory over Wales in their home match qualifier. The side included Spur's Steffen Iverson - Odd Iverson's son (Racing Mechelen)- Wales twice came back from being behind until the 80th minute Norweigian winner. According to my paper Steffen wassubstituted after 5 mins - but I'm not sure why ! Rather amusingly, Ryan Giggs was sent off, too. Doesn't he wish there was a Team UK ?! Wales have equalled a record set in 1970 of failing to win in 12 successive matches.

Louise single

Louise 'Stuck in the Middle With You'

Picture from dotmusic

Well done to Louise - Harry Redknapp's Daughter-In-Law - who answered some of her critics with a fabulous first week Number 4 placing with her new single, 'Stuck in the Middle With You'. Now in it's second week, it's still at number 10. Both weeks it has outsold the Spice Girls' singer Emma Bunting's new record, which is a measure of just how successsful the singer has been.

Owen Scores - World Cup Qualifier Hatrick.

The greater the pressure - the more likely Michael Owen is to score !! England had to go to Germany and win to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the World Cup Finals automatically. In 60 previous games only Portugal had beaten Germany in a World Cup Qualifier, and that was in a game where Germany had already secured their qualification.

England fans sat down to watch a game half planning another activity by half time once the impossible was confirmed. After 90 minutes the unbelievable had happened. Not only did England win ... they won 5-1.

So unbelievable is it, that photgraphs of the '1-5' scoreline have already become an enduring image of the match - maybe you've been sent it as an email attachment !

Michael's contribution to the match was a mere hatrick ! The last Englishman to score a hatrick against Germany was knighted for it, so I think an M.B.E. at least should be in the offing !!!

That person was, of course Sir Geoff Hurst and his hatrick won the World Cup Final for England, so lets hope England keep on course with a couple more victories against Albania and Greece. Germany have only one remaining game against Finland, but have a 3 point advantage still. But, with goal difference now in their favour, England have won themselves the advantage.

Further Michael Owen news - Michael is croping up in a couple more adverts.

One is for ITV's satalitte service. Nick Hancock is seen interviewing two women, who say they want to watch the football because of how Michael knows how to where shorts.

Next, I saw in today's 'Times' newspaper (5 September 2001) and this is altogether more sophisticated. Young Michael is shown wearing a Tissot watch, with the slogan 'true performance Michael Owen' . After the message 'Great Goals on Saturday. Now it's time for Albania. Good luck to England tonight.', the final slogan is, 'Tissot watches. As worn by Michael Owen.'

The picture, which looks decidedly airbrushed, a besuited Michael is shown holding a football against his head with his watch facing the camera.
