Barrowclough Debut

Carl Barrowclough - Stewart's (Newcastle United) son - made his debut last season for Barnsley. His first match was against Gillingham on 25 March, 2001 and he became an instant hit when he won the side a penalty after coming on as a substitute. Stewart debuted as Barnsley player himself in 1969 and moved to Newcastle United in August 1970. He had a further spell there from 1981-1983, also.

Gabby United

Congratulations to Gabby (née) Yorath - Terry's daughter - who was married to Scottish International Rugby Union star, Kenny Logan, on the 19th. Kenny plays for the London Wasps, see Wasps RFC - The Official Web Site.

Their status as celebrity newly weds began when 'Hello!' magazine, no.666, ran a three page article on them last month.

Rather less kind, Football365.com runs a feature on some of Gabby's howlers. most of which aren't funny, but I do like Gabby's question to the FA Cup referee in 1999. Gabby reportedly asked who he would like to win.

Incidentally, Kenny was NOT responsible for the song, 'Footloose', that was Kenny Loggins

Owen Update.

As the new season looms, Michael Owen - Terry Owen's (Bradford City) son - can be seen just about everywhere. His picture is on the front page of the August 2001 (no.84) edition of 'FourFourTwo' and at least 3 of the sattelite television monthlies (1 ntl, 2 Sky).

Michael even manages the front AND back pages of 'Match', 21 July edition. This is due to the back page and feature in the magazine being Michael's sponsorship of 'Sporties' breakfast cereal. In the interests of Bob 70-71 research I have tasted some of the them. They're basically mini-Shredded Wheat with a sugary inside. Sorry that should read, with a built in vitamin B and glucose Powerzone.

Sporties as sponsored by Michael Owen

Michael Owen sponsors 'Sporties'

The adverts have been on television, as well as in magazines. The advert, which includes a voiceover by Terry Venables (QPR) shows Michael eating Sporties, training hard and getting mobbed by Michael fans !

And for those of us in the UK there's even a choice of three different Michael Owen boxes 'to collect'!!! I have two of them so far ! One even mentions Bob's 70-71 star and Michael's dad, Terry. It says.'Terry Owen, Michael's dad, was also a professional footballer, playing for Everton, Chester and Rochdale.' Tell me why was Rochdale included and Bradford City dropped from that list ? Sporties box writers, obviously have only a limited sense of 70-71 fun.

Michael Owen sponsors Socca-Sacs

Michael Owen sponsors Socca-Sacs

This reminds me I saw another Michael Owen product the other day as I roamed a toyshop looking for party presents. This is the 'Socca-Sac', that is essentially a small ball on an elastic which can be kicked and retrieved without sending your younger sibling to get the ball. The idea, according to the packaging is to develop your control and practise close quarter skills. I'm inclined to think you develop more control when you realise that once you've cocked up a kick you have all the hassle of running after the ball to fetch it ... but that's me.

Redknapps Update

Louise

Mrs Jamie Redknapp (Harry's Daughter-in-law) is on the cover for the July/August 2001 'Cosmopolitan Hair' magazine. I'm afraid the research budget didn't extend to buying a copy, but there was about a five page feature with photos of Louise's hair fashion. (You can see why that remauned on the shelf)

Jamie

Jamie has returned as Liverpool's captain and has even played the season's opening friendly, which is good to hear. Not only that but he got a goal, too. It was in a friendly against the German side Beyer Leverkusen and was a 3-2 victory to Liverpool. Jamie was also on the front cover of the 23 June, 2001 copy of 'Match'. On the Move

Several moves to report amongst the next generation stars.

Ian Walker - Mike's (Watford) son -has left Spurs for Leicester City. This follows losing his first team place at the club last season. The move between the two Premiership sides cost 2.5 million pounds.See News - Ian Walker and ESPN.com Soccernet England News - Walker 'Spurs deceit hurt me'

Darren Currie -
Tony's nephew - has left Barnet, the club that lost it's League status last season, and joined another of the League's new boys, Wycombe Wamderers for 200,000 pounds (bargain !!!). The move was first announced in June, but did not become official until the 10th of this month, due to agent's negotiations. Thus proving even non-League players have agents ! To be fair, Darren never actually played below the Third Division, and is now a Second Division player. See Wycombe Wanderers Football Club - Official Web Site

Gary Bellamy - Arthur's (Burnley) son - has taken over as manager of Dover Athletic, following the departure of the Bob's 70-71 player, Bill Williams (Gillingham). Gary left League football in 1997 when he joined Chelmsford City. Last season, as their manager he won promotion from the Dr Martains Eastern Division in second place. Dover Athletic are one of the smaller but more ambitious sides in the Conference. Last season they finished 15th

Staying Put

Meanwhile, speculation that Nigel Clough was going to follow his father, Brian (Derby County manager) by going to Nottingham Forest as their assistant manager, has been ruled out. Hence, Nigel remains manager of the Dr Martains Premier League side, Burton Albion, who finished second last year, just 3 pointsfrom a Confernece place.
