Obituaries

The most recent edition of Soccer History has arrived at Bob 70-71 Towers. This is the Summer 2007 edition, issue 16, (price in UK £4-50 via cheque made payable to 'Soccer History Ltd' at 26 Saxon Street, Lincoln LN1 3HN). Once again when I get this excellent magazine, it is tinged with sadness due to the extensive obituary section.

The following is a list of players who have sadly died that has not previously been reported on this site and the date that they died:

George Aitken (Watford Trainer). August 1928. See Obituary

Jim Campbell (Stranraer). 20 October 2006. See Obituary

Giacinto Facchetti (Inter Milan). 4 September 2006. See Obituary

Charlie Hall (Charlton Athletic Trainer). 30 January 2007

Walter McCrae (Kilmarnock Manager). 22 September 2006. See Obituary

Billy McGann (St Mirren). 6 January 2007

Alberto Spencer (Peñarol, Uruguay) 3 November 2006. See Obituary

Ernie Tagg (Crewe Alexandria) 29 November 2006. See Obituary

Johnny Vincent (Birmingham City) 23 December 2006 See Obituary

All but Giacinto Facchetti are added to the site for the first time. Following Ernie Tagg's inclusion, the Crewe Alexandria page has been expanded to include all the 1970-71 players and with Johnny Vincent's inclusion, the Birmingham City page has been expanded to include Rothamns 1970-71 players as well.

Alan Ball Cup - The Soapstar Challenge

Sky Television in the UK broadcast the 'Alan Ball Cup - The Soapstar Challenge' in tribute to Bob 70-71 Pages player, Alan Ball. I believe the match was played at the new MK Dons stadium on the same day as the Alan Ball memorial Cup game (see below). http://www.skyone.co.uk/alanball reports

Top Bob 2007 Award Winner

Congratulations to Sir Alex Ferguson, who was the very first winner of the award back in 2000, for winning the coveted award for the second time in his distinguished career. What makes the award all the more special is that Sir Alex won the award by public vote - the first for 3 seasons. He won 30% of the poll with the only serious challenge coming from another former winner, Brian Talbot (Ipswich Town), who won 21% of the vote. For a full list of the results see Poll Results.

Sir Alex no doubt won due to being the manager that won the Premier League and nearly snuck up on a Double, but lost the FA Cup final to arch-rivals for honours, Chelsea.

Previous winners are: 2000 Sir Alex Ferguson, 2001 John Lambie, 2002 Sir Bobby Robson, 2003 Brian Talbot (Ipswich Town), 2004 David Hay, 2005 Sam Allardyce (Bolton Wanderers youth), 2006 Raymond Domenech (Olympique Lyonnais).

Special Bob Award 2007

In 2005 and 2006 I wrote... 'The Special Bob Award is awarded by me to the Bob 70-71 Player who distinguished themselves to the Webmaster (me) personally. Anyone who scrutinises the site in any detail will know that this will inevitably go to an ex-Leeds United Player.'

And guess what, once again, this year is no exception...

But worse than that I'm afraid, I have no choice but to once again give the Special Bob Award to the very first and last year's recipient, Eddie Gray. T Eddie becomes the first player to win either award three times, and the first player to retain an award.

Unlike last year Eddie did have a few challengers this time. off the top of my head I know I also met - to talk to - Howard Wilkinson, Norman Hunter, Terry Dolan (Huddersfield Town), but this year I actually met Eddie a couple of times and had a great long chat with him, which along with his superp Radio Leeds coverage of Leeds United, makes him a very clear winner.

Previous winners: 2000 Eddie Gray, 2001 Norman Hunter, 2002 Peter Lorimer, 2003 Paul Hart (Stockport County), 2004 Allan Clarke, 2005 Paul Reaney (Leeds United), 2006 Eddie Gray

Next Generation News

Very regular visitors to the site know that the Top Bob and Special Bob Awards are awarded on the day (or there abouts) of the FA Community Shield. For the third year in a row this match featured Frank Lampard, son of Frank Lampard. The Chelsea player won in 2005, but lost in 2006 to Liverpool. This season Chelsea lost again, this time to Manchester United. Though it finished 1-1, Chelsea lost on penalties thanks to three saves from Man U goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar. Frank's was one of the penalties Edwin saved.

Manchester United have now taken the record of Charity Shield / Community Shield wins to 16, one ahead of Liverpool with 15. Chelsea have won it 3 times.

Reserve Chelsea goalie, Carlo Cudicini, son of Fabio Cudicini (A.C. Milan), was also on the Chelsea bench, but did not play.

New Format - Bob and 1970-71 Footballers Reaches MySpace!

Regular visitors to the site will have noticed a slight change to the format of the site. There is several good reasons for this.

Firstly, I noticed that anyone navigating to the site using a mobile phone is greeted with what seems like yards of blue background, which was the site index on the left hand side of the page. So I have decided to eliminate this on all future pages. Navigation links can now be found at the top and bottom of every new page.

Each page on the site is individually hand crafted (!) so I doubt I will ever completely revamp every page, but I will do each one as I update it - as I have often done in the past.

Also I have decided to 'get with it, man' in a really happening kind of way, and set up a page on MySpace. From here I will keep a 70-71 Blog going, too. See http://www.myspace.com/bob7071, MySpace.com Groups and Bob's 70-71 Blog

Alan Ball Memorial Cup

An All-Star England XI played a World XI for The Alan Ball Memorial Cup in tribute to Bob70-71 Pages player, Alan Ball. The match played at the MK Dons new stadium was won 4-2 by the England team and was broadcast on Sky television in the UK in the evening. Alan's son, Jimmy Ball was given the trophy for England by Sir Geoff Hurst, and George Cohan's (Fulham) nephew, the ruby player Ben Cohen, was in the England side. www.mkdons.premiumtv.co.uk reports:

Proud Jimmy Ball lifted the Alan Ball Memorial Cup at stadium:mk on Sunday after England beat the World 4-2.The son of the late England legend was presented with the trophy by World Cup hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst after a thoroughly entertaining match at the new home of the Milton Keynes Dons.

Goals from Kevin Campbell, Les Ferdinand, a spectacular effort from Rob Lee and a penalty from competition winner Mark Baker fired England to victory - ironically by the same scoreline that Ball and co famously beat Germany in the 1966 World Cup Final.

Italian duo Lorenzo Amoruso and Benito Carbone hit first-half goals for the World side but they were unable to break the spirit of '66 as England, captained by Dons manager Paul Ince, ran out winners.

Carbone gave the World the lead early on, jabbing the ball past Dave Beasant after seeing his initial effort hit the crossbar. England responded with a fine finish from Campbell, driving Graham Le Saux's cut-back into the top corner for the equaliser.

But they went into half-time trailing when Amoruso was given space to run through midfield before firing a low shot out of Beasant's reach. England took over though in the second period, Ferdinand netting another equaliser from England rugby star Ben Cohen - nephew of '66 World Cup winner George.

Lee gave England the lead for the first time, curling home a beauty from 25 yards, before Baker was allowed to finish the job following a foul on Le Saux.

Next Generation News

Stephen Clemence, son of Ray Clemence (Liverpool) has left Birmingham City in a big £1 million move to Leicester City. This means that Stephen will not follow his team up into the Premiership, but rather stay in the Championship. However, Leicester are currently under the ambitious new management of fellow Next Generation star Martin Allen , son of Dennis Allen (Bournemouth).

Stephen has played 121 League games scoring 8 goals in over 4 years at Birmingham, having joined them from Spurs in 2003.

Next Generation News

1) Ian Moore, son of Ronnie Moore (Tranmere Rovers) has signed for League One side, Hartlepool United. Ian was released by Leeds United following their relegation to League One at the end of the season. Although something of a crowd favourite because he never game less than 110 per cent effort, Ian always struggled to make a first team position his own whilst at the club.

In over two years at Leeds United he started just 20 League games, and came on as substitute a further 39 times, often in the dying minutes. Consequently he managed just 2 League goals. After the announcement there was speculation that he would join both Huddersfield Town and Chester City, but finally settled on Hartlepool United.

Ian first signed as a professional back in 1994 and including loans Hartlepool will be Ian's 8th different club. His most successful spell to date was as a Burnley player from 2000 - 2005.

2) Juan Sebastián Verón, son of Juan Ramón Verón (Estudiantes de La Plata) plays in Argentina's Semi-Final game of the Copa América being held in Venezuela and played in the Polideportivo Cachamay stadium at Puerto Ordaz. Argentina won 3-0 against Mexico to emphatically reach the Final, which will be against holders Brazil. Brazil beat Uruguay on penalties after a 2-2 draw in their semi-final.

Argentina v Brazil will be a repeat of the last final in 2004 when Brazil again won on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Along with Uruguay, Argentina have won the competition the most times - 14, but have not won it since 1993, six competitions ago.Brazil have won 3 of the last 4 competitions.

In this match, Juan was substituited in the 78th minute when the score was already 3-0. It was his 60th game for Argentina and he has scored 9 times. The final is on Sunday 15 July 2007.

Next Generation News

1) Andy Todd, son of Colin Todd (Sunderland) has left Premiership side to join Derby County, who are newly promoted back into the Premiership. The Todd family name is very well known in Derby already, of course, as his father won the League there twice as a player, and returned as a manager the season the club were last relegated from the Premiership.

Last season Andy played just 13 games for Blackburn Rovers in all competitions, and has not played since February 07. Since joining in 2002 Andy has played 88 League games for Blackburn Rovers.

2) Juan Sebastián Verón, son of Juan Ramón Verón (Estudiantes de La Plata) plays in Argentina's Quarter-Final game of the Copa América being held in Venezuela. The match was played in the Metropolitano stadium at Barquisimeto and Argentina beat Peru 4-0. It is the third time in their 4 matches so far that Argentina have scored 4 goals in what is turning out to be a remarkable tournament for them.! Juan was substituited in the 71st minute when the score was still 2-0. It was his 59th game for Argentina and he has scored 9 times.

Next Generation News

Michael Oakes , son of Alan Oakes (Manchester City) has left Championship side, Wolverhampton Wanderers after playing 199 League games to join fellow Championship club, Cardiff City.Last season Michael did not play a single game for the first team. Michael's career dates as far back as 1991 with Aston Vill, from whom he moved to Wolves, in 1999.

Next Generation News

Juan Sebastián Verón, son of Juan Ramón Verón (Estudiantes de La Plata) misses Argentina's third game in the qualifying Group C of the Copa América, which is a 1-0 win over Paraguay. This means Argentina win Group, and will aoid Brazil until the Final if they reach it. Brazil are the holders and winner of the 3 of the last 4 Copa América (...erm how do you make that plural?)

2 July

Next Generation News

1) Darren Currie, nephew of Tony Currie (Sheffield United), has ended his loan at Derby County following their promotion to the Premiership, and trasferred permanently from Ipswich Town of the Championship to join League One side, Luton Town.

As a Leeds fan I can report that the nephew of an ex-Leeds legend was always a curse against us (meant in the nicest possible way), and now he has joined the ex-Leeds United management team at Luton he must be pencilled in for hat-tricks every Leeds v Luton match henceforth!

Darren began his career in 1993 and including loan spells this is Darren's 11th different club.

2) Juan Sebastián Verón, son of Juan Ramón Verón (Estudiantes de La Plata) plays in Argentina's second game in the qualifying Group C of the Copa América being held in Venezuela. It was held in the José Encarnación (Pachencho) Romero in Maracaibo, and was a second emphatic victory - 4-2 over 2001 Copa América winners, Columbia. Juan was substituited in the 80th minute when the score was still 3-2. It was his 58th game for Argentina and he has scored 9 times.

It's been a few months since I invited the World to read a book with me, an offer it has so far managed to resist, but it has been suggested by DR at Yahoo! David would have been 15 in 1970-71 so I'm not certain if he has his own place on the site, though naturally the book covers an era when many players who are were playing.

Ricky George Update

Nipping about the internet I stumbled upon a regular blog by Ricky George (Barnet), which can be found at http://blogs.24dash.com/rickygeorge. Ricky has a regular column on non-league football in the Daily Telegraph and does summarising for the BBC regularly. See Where are they now: Summer 2007

Here is one of the blogs about the Hereford United giantkilling team reunion in February 2007.

http://blogs.24dash.com/rickygeorge/2007/02/06/hereford-united-giantkillers-35th-anniversary/ reports:

You cannot spend nearly half your life re-living an unspectacular yet very famous goal that changed your life - without paying appropriate tribute on the anniversary of the event.

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Hereford United’s 1972 FA Cup third round replay defeat of Newcastle United. Unusually, but not surprisingly, there are no plans for any celebration to mark the famous day. No doubt Colin Addison, our player-manager, will be in touch with ‘phone calls and text messages. Colin, now 66, stays in regular contact with everyone throughout the year.  However, with the exception of Mike McLaughlin who lives in the USA, the entire squad were last together barely six months ago, to say farewell to Roger Griffiths. ‘Griff’, the only Herefordian amongst us, played right back in the side that drew 2-2 at Newcastle and then played for 79 minutes with a broken leg in the historic replay. When he finally hobbled off the muddy Edgar Street pitch to be replaced by yours truly, the number 2 shouted words of encouragement that will live with me forever. On the 19th July last year, Roger Griffiths suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 61.

‘Griff’ is the first of the Giant-Killers to leave us. First of the twelve Hereford legends who made FA Cup history together and came within an ace of creating the football sensation of all time.

Prior to the Newcastle tie, the part-time professionals of Hereford United of the Southern League had beaten Fourth Division Northampton Town, after two replays. After the Newcastle tie, Hereford United drew 0-0 with West Ham United at Edgar Street, before losing 3-1 in the replay, in front of 42000 people who crammed into Upton Park on a Monday afternoon during the three-day week.

There had been chances to take the lead in both games against Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and company and I still have nightmares about missing a golden opportunity very early in the replay.

But it is the Newcastle game that will be preserved for all time. A headline in a Sunday broadsheet last week pronounced; “It will never happen again”. BBC’s Match of the Day” cameras captured the drama for posterity. Malcolm Macdonald scored for Newcastle in the 80th minute, Ronnie Radford equalised with the goal of the century seven minutes later, I got the winner in extra time and fledgling commentator John Motson wrote himself into Hereford folklore. Two years ago, Motty was made an honorary member of the 1971/72 squad, an accolade surely unique in football history.

The Hereford side had been put together by the late John Charles, who left the club in October 1971, to be replaced by Addison, whose quality and leadership complimented the unquenchable team spirit that already prevailed.

For the record, the Giant-killers were; Fred Potter in goal, Griffiths, McLaughlin, Alan Jones and Ken Mallender. Addison, Tony Gough and Radford. Dudley Tyler, Billy Meadows and Brian Owen.

For my part, that modestly struck winning goal made up for all the disappointments I had suffered in a previously turbulent football career. I am proud and privileged, thirty five years on, to be writing these words on behalf of a magnificent group of men.

Next Generation News

Apologies if this is not 100 per cent correct, but as far as I can work it out Juan Sebastián Verón, son of Juan Ramón Verón (Estudiantes de La Plata), has played his first international for Argentina since November 2003 when injury put him out of the side, and he never won his place back.

It was presumed his international career was over, indeed his career generally was presumed to be nearing its end, when he returned from Europe to his home country to play for Estudiantes de La Plata.

Juan's contract had been with Chelsea since 2003, but after he failed to impress there he moved on to Inter Milan in Italy from 2004 to 2006, and then Estudiantes for last season. The contract with Chlesea is now finally over.

Somewhat out of the blue the Argentinian coach Alfio Basile said he was going to pick home based Argentian players and Juan was called back into the squad in February. I cannot trace any other appearances, so it seems his return match has been on the major stage of the Copa América being held in Venezuela

Argentina's opener was in qualifying Group C in the José Encarnación (Pachencho) Romero in Maracaibo, and was an emphatic 4-1 victory over the USA. Juan was substituited in the 87th minute. I believe it was his 57th game for Argentina and he has scored 9 times.

New Additions

1) Statues

For reasons known only to my subconscious mind, I spent the entire weekend developing the Statues page on the site. This essentially involved going through all 92 League club grounds featured at www.footballgroundguide.co.uk.

It took many hours, but it has been worth it, especially as it has thrown up a number of new additions to the pages. These are:

Jimmy McIlroy (
Bolton Wanderers Chief Coach);

Harry Dolman (
Bristol City Chairman), John Sillett (Bristol City Coach);

Dr Iven (
Burnley Director), Bob Lord (Burnley Chairman), Albert Maddox (Burnley Secretary), Harry Potts (Burnley General Manager);

Arthur Wait (
Crystal Palace Chairman);

Dave Bowen (
Northampton Town General; Manager);

Geoffry Watling (
Norwich City Chairman);

John King (
Port Vale);

Frank Walton (Southend Director);

and Tony Horseman (Wycombe Wanderers)

2)
Port Vale

Port Vale's John King, you will note, is the only new League player to be added, so to keep him company I added the Port Vale page to the site. This page includes names of the whole 70-71 squad, plus John Brodie who is also new to the site. He arrived at Port Vale in the middle of the 1970-71 season from Bradford Park Avenue.

3) Others

Whilst surfing round history sections of site generally I also finally placed Keith Burkinshaw as reserve team coach of Newcastle United.

And I found out that Bertie Mee the Double winning manager in 1970-71 had an elder brother, George Mee, who played League football. He is placed on the site at Sons and Daughters: Brothers.

Anyway there is a ton of new information on the page so have a look at the Statues page and see if there's any new info you could help add, or corrections to the info already there.

Next Generation News

1) England re-commenced their European Championship qualifying campaign with an awkward must-win match away to Estonis at Le Coq Arena, Tallinn. It ended a comfortable 3-0 win and everyone began to wonder what all the fuss was about

Frank Lampard - son of Frank Lampard, played his 55th game for his country in which he has scored 12 goals.

Michael Owen, son of Terry Owen, scored for his first time since 3 June 2006, the first time since 1998 that the England team have had to wait a year for an England goal - though in terms of minutes played, of course it hardly ranked as a goal drought. It also meant Michael avoided going 5 games without a goal for the first time in his England career. Michael came off in the 88th minute when the score was already 3-0.

Michael has now played 82 times for England, and has scored 37 times. Michael remains 4th in the all-time list of England's Highest Goalscorers

Beckham Watch - David Beckham won his 96th cap as he gets another game closer to the magic 100th cap, a total so far only made by three Bob 70-71 Page players Peter Shilton (125 caps), Bobby Moore (108) and Sir Bobby Charlton (106), plus Billy Wright (105). Beckham is the 5th in the all time list and Michael Owen is 10th.

2) Steffen Iversen, son of Odd Iversen (Racing Mechelen) plays for Norway in a European Championships qualifier at home to Hungary in Oslo. The final score was a magnificent 4-0 victory, Norway's second in a row. Steffen scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute, which is the second match in a row he has scored playing for Norway. This was his 3rd in this European Championship campaign.Steffen has played 68 times for his country and he has scored 15 times.

3) Tobias Linderoth, son of Anders Linderoth (Helsingborgs IF)plays for Sweden intheir European Championships qualifier away to Iceland in Råsunda. Sweden comfortably win 5-0. Tobias played until the 62nd minute, by which time it was already 5-0. This was Tobias's 69th cap for Sweden, he has scored once.

1) Steffen Iversen, son of Odd Iversen (Racing Mechelen) plays for Norway in a European Championships qualifier at home to Malta in Oslo. Steffen had missed Norway's last match a qualifier away to Turkey. The final score was a 4-0 victory. Steffen scored in the 79th minute to make it 3-0. It is Steffen's 67th cap for Norway, he has scored 14 times for his country in total.

2) Tobias Linderoth, son of Anders Linderoth (Helsingborgs IF) is in the Swedish side that is awarded a 3-0 victory against Denmark in their away European Championship qualifier against Denmark at Parken, Copenhagen. In actual fact the game was ended when the score was 3-3, and it made the regular news headlines internationally!

It seems the sequence of events was that Sweden took a 3-0 lead after just 25 minutes, but Denmark had fought it back to 3-3 by the 76th minute. Then in the 89th minute, the Danish player, Christian Poulsen was sent off for punching Swede, Markus Rosenberg, in the stomach and a penalty was given. A Danish fan lost it, ran on the pitch and attacked the referee Herbert Fandel from Germany. The officials clustered together and decided to come off the pitch, and UEFA decided on a 3-0 Sweden victory by way of a punishment, along with fines and venue consequences.

Meanwhile ... this was Tobias's 68th cap for Sweden, he has scored once.

It is called Footballing Fifties, and is an in-depth look at what I call 'the decade when the Beautiful Game was in black and white. I give you Matthews and Finney, Lofthouse and Milburn, Shackleton and Mannion, Billy Wright and the great John Charles (he would be worth more today than the entire Leeds team put together!)

The final chapter is a poll on the decade I am inviting people to vote on their favourites players of the decade and there is a full breakdown of all the leading contenders at www.footballingfifties.co.uk

Anybody taking part in the poll will be offered the book (due for publication in the Autumn) at a discount price.

Jimmy Greaves is providing the introduction, and a 1950s 'fantasy' team - in the good old 2-3-5 formation should be sent to \par normangiller@footballingfifties.com

I will do my best to send a personal reply to anybody who takes the trouble to vote.

Peter Kitchen (Doncaster Rovers)

The Goal Gourmet: The Peter Kitchen Story by Neilson N. Kaufman
The Goal Gourmet: The Peter Kitchen Story by Neilson N. Kaufman

www.amazon.co.uk (click to see the book on Amazon) reports

In December 1999, Peter Kitchen was voted by fans of both Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient as one of their greatest ever players. In more recent polls conducted by BBC's Football Focus, FourFourTwo Magazine and other popular fanzines, he was voted as one of their best players - some of these polls taking place more than twenty years after he played for them, and is today still considered a cult hero by both sets of fans.

Born in Mexborough, South Yorkshire in 1952, Peter Kitchen attended Mexborough Grammar School and represented Yorkshire Senior Schools and England 'B' teams. He was spotted by Doncaster Rovers manager, Lawrie McMenemy, and signed up in June 1970, beating Leeds United to his signature. He made his league debut at Shrewsbury Town on 27 November 1970, scoring after just ninety seconds. Between 1970 and 1985, Peter Kitchen went onto play for five different League clubs and scored a total of 210 senior goals from 545 appearances, even after his retirement from the professional game, he turned out for Corinthian Casuals Vets and knocked-in 280 goals from 228 appearances.

In this book about one of the greatest goal scorers from the lower divisions, author Neilson Kaufman captures the life and times of Peter Kitchen's career. The book also features many previously unpublished photographs from Peter's own collection, and there is a full statistical record on one of the great players ever to put on a Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient shirt. This book is a must for the bookshelves of any football fan with an interest on the men who shaped the beautiful game and in particular for the fans of the clubs for which Peter Kitchen played.

Brain Clark (Cardiff City) Real, Robins and Bluebirds: The Autobiography of Goal Scorer Brian Clark by Brian Clark and Richard Shepherd.

http://www.amazon.co.uk (click to see the book on Amazon) reports

Following in the footsteps of his prolific goal scoring father Don, Brian Clark signed for Bristol City in the late 1950s and became a firm favourite with the Ashton Gate fans for his prowess in front of goal. Typically 'knocking in' over 20 goals a season, he established an attacking partnership with the legendary John Atyeo, and scored in the final game of 1964/65 to secure the Robins' promotion to Division 2. In 1968, after a brief sojourn at Huddersfield Town, Brian joined Cardiff City and earned the plaudits of the Ninian Park faithful.

He struck up a fearsome partnership with a young John Toshack and became a hero with the Bluebirds for his ability to find the net, especially with his superb headed goal against Real Madrid in the quarter-final of the European Cup-Winners Cup. In 1975, after three years with AFC Bournemouth and then Millwall, Brian rejoined Cardiff City before finally moving to Newport County for his final three seasons before retiring from playing the game. Still involved in football as a pundit on Cardiff City's website, Brian's opinions on the game are often sought by television, newspaper and radio.

Written with football journalist and author Richard Shepherd, "Real Robins and Bluebirds" is the fascinating story of a true goal scorer!

Next Generation News

1) The 'New Wembley' or more formally, the National Stadium at Wembley hosted its first England full international with two Next Generation stars in the side. The match, a friendly verus Brazil, was drawn 1-1, though Brazil's equaliser did not come until the 2nd minute of injury time.

Incidentally, the game was also remarkable for being the return of David Beckham for his first match since the end of the World Cup finals in 2006, when he resigned the captaincy and the new manager Steve McLaren, decided to not pick him. It was Beckham's 95th game as he homes in on that magic 100th cap, a total so far only made by three Bob 70-71 Page players Peter Shilton (125 caps), Bobby Moore (108) and Sir Bobby Charlton (106), plus Billy Wright (105). David is indeed number 5 in the all-time list.

Frank Lampard - son of Frank Lampard, played his 54th game for his country in which he has scored 12 goals, and when he left the field in the 86th minute England were still 1 up!

Frank was joined by Michael Owen, son of Terry Owen, for his first time since 20 June 2006, the day Michael picked up a cruel injury at the begining of the World Cup Finals match v Sweden. It was good to see Michael back, but his failure to score meant that he had gone 4 matches without scoring, which is his longest spell without a goal for his country. However, this is not a reason to panic, as this is the fourth time in his career he has has had such a baron spell. Michael has now played 81 times for England, and has scored 36 times. Michael also left the field whent eh team were 1 up, in the 83rd minute.

Incidentally, following the information about Beckham above, Michael is number 10 in the all-time most appearances list. Of currently available players, there is also Gary Neville at number 8 with 85 caps.

2) Steffen Iversen, son of Odd Iversen (Racing Mechelen) plays for Norway in a European Championships qualifier at home to Malta in Oslo. Steffen had missed Norway's last match a qualifier away to Turkey. The final score was a 4-0 victory. Steffen scored in the 79th minute to make it 3-0. It is Steffen's 67th cap for Norway, he has scored 14 times for his country in total.
