Yorkshire Evening Post
The England international match being shown live on BBC1 was so uninspirational I read almost every word of this evening's edition of the Yorkshire Evening Post.
It reports that local school Carr Manor High have named their school houses after local sportsmen, namely Jane Tomlinson (who performs feats of sporting endurance in spite of having a diagnosis of cancer), Fred Trueman (the late England and Yorkshire cricketer), and Billy Bremner. I bet a drinking contest would leave the Tomlinson House for dead...
It also reports that Beeston, a local district in Leeds is the home of the John Charles Centre for Sport. See John Charles (Hereford United). John's name has been adopted for what used to be known as the South Leeds Stadium.
Whilst on this subject I notice that Leeds United's Elland Road now has an Eddie Gray Suite, see Statues

Grandsons Update
Oliver Allen, son of Clive Allen and grandson of Les Allen (QPR manager), made his League debut in Barnet's 1-1 away League Two draw against Notts County at Meadow Lane. Oliver did not come on until the 86th minute, by which time the scoring was all done with, but this now means the Allens have achieved their third generation of League footballers.

Davies Added
Nigel keeps adding them and I'll keep reporting them. The latest addition to Nigel Mercer's supreme site of 60s -80s football collectables is a tribute to Wales and Southampton star, Ron Davies (Southampton), see Ron Davies.
Just in case you
have missed it, Nigel charts the careers of players
through football cards (etc), and previous tributes have
been: George Best, John McGrath, Peter Osgood, Martin Peters, John Hollins, Brian Labone, Alan Ball, Terry Hennessey, and Terry Cooper,

Well, that League debut is another step closer. Oliver Allen, son of Clive Allen and grandson of Les Allen (QPR manager), made his first team debut in the FA Cup 4th Round in Barnet's 2-0 home defeat to Plymouth Argyle. Oliver did not come on until the 89th minute, by which time the scoring was all done with, but it is a step closer to the Allens' achieving their third generation of League footballers.

Taylor Steps Down
Peter Taylor (Southend United) has left his job as England Under-21 coach. Peter actually took temporary chargeof the England full team at one poit and for a while looked like he may even become the England manager. But it was not to be, and now Crystal Palace, who are at the wrong end of the Championship have asked Peter to drop the role.
NB Stuart Pearce has taken on the role as England Under-21 Manager, and the early signs are that he too, is facing the same concerns from his club about commitment to his team that Peter did.

1) Mark Cooper, son of Terry Cooper, has parted company with Conference National side, Tamworth, who are currently bottom of the League. Mark joined the club in 2002 as a player and became player-manager for the 2004-5 season. Mark has played over 80 times for the club, though his only appearance this season was in his last game in charge, on 20 January 2007, a 2-0 away defeat to Forest Green in the League, when he came on in the 85th minute.
2) Adam Hinshelwood, nephew to Martin Hinshelwood (Crystal Palace) and son of Paul Hinshelwood, may be out for 9 months.http://news.bbc.co.uk reports:
Brighton defender Adam Hinshelwood faces nine months out after receiving confirmation he needs knee surgery for the second time in two years.
Hinshelwood, 23, limped out of the Boxing day defeat to Yeovil and will need a second operation to repair cruciate ligament damage.
He was out for 11 months after similar damage to the same knee in March 2005.
Club physio Malcolm Stuart told the Brighton Argus: "He'll have to undergo another cruciate reconstruction."

Big Ron Returns
Ron Atkinson has returned to football as the Director of Football to Conference North side, Kettering Town. Ron has not been in management since 2004, and he returns to the club at which he began his management career back in 1971.
http://news.bbc.co.uk reports
Ron Atkinson has been appointed director of football at Kettering Town until the end of the season.
The 67-year-old is returning to the Conference North club, where he started his managerial career in 1971.
Atkinson went on to manage Cambridge, West Brom (twice), Manchester United, Sheffield Wednesday (twice), Aston Villa, Coventry and Nottingham Forest.
He has been out of football since 2004 when he lost his job as an ITV pundit for making an on-air racist comment.
The comment was about Marcel Desailly, then of Chelsea, and was made after a Champions League match when Atkinson thought he was off-air.
He parted company with ITV and has since taken various media roles, including a television programme that saw him act as a consultant for brief spells at Swindon and Peterborough.
Atkinson led Kettering to double Southern League title success in the 1970s and current chairman Imraan Ladak was delighted to have brought him back to the club.
"Having spoken to Ron over recent months, it was clear he still held a deep-rooted affection for Kettering and would love to come back and help the club in any way he could," said Ladak.
"I am very pleased to confirm his appointment as director of football for the remainder of this season.
"With Ron's knowledge, experience and achievements, he will certainly be involved in and responsible for all aspects of the football club."
Atkinson, who will try to help Poppies manager Morell Maison, admitted: "If you had said this a week ago I would have said you were potty.
"He (Ladak) asked me if I would be interested in helping the club to promotion. It is a place I have always had an affection for.
"They have slipped down a bit over the last few years but hopefully they can get back where they belong.
"For the first week I will just be observing but then if I see things that I think could be improved, I will make those points."

Grandsons
It hasn't quite happened yet, but presuming that Oliver Allen, son of Clive Allen and grandson of Les Allen (QPR manager), makes his League debut, the site will have it's very first known example of a grandson to a Bob 70-71 Player playing a League game.
Oliver has been on the books of Spurs and Birmingham City, and at the latter he turned out for the reserves a number of times. Today Oliver moved to League Two side, Barnet, and must stand a realistic chance of making that elusive debut.
Oliver is not actually the first grandson of a Bob 70-71 Player to be spotted, however.
To be a so called 'Bob 70-71 Player', the person must have been a player or manager during the 1970-71 season itself.
Alan Ball Senior, the father of England World Cup Player Alan Ball, qualifies as a Bob 70-71 Player in his own right as the manager of Preston North End. Alan Ball junior's son, Jimmy Ball, was a youth player at Exeter and Southampton, and the assistant youth coach at Portsmouth. However, he never played League football.
Even aside from being a Bob 70-71 Player, there are not too many examples of three generations of footballers at all. Three this site knows about are George (Grandfather), Mike (Father) and Nicky (Son) Summerbee; Wally, Martin (Crystal Palace) and Danny Hinshelwood; and Wally, Paul (Martin's brother), and (brothers) Adam and Paul Hinshelwood.
If you know any more I would love to add them to this list.

Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex Ferguson, has become the League's youngest current manager. He has been appointed manager of Peterborough United, run by ex-Manchester United junior, Barry Fry (Bedford Town). Reportedly Darren was disappointed not to get the post at Wrexham after Denis Smith (Stoke City) was sacked. Darren played over 300 League games for Wrexham in a 7 year career. Darren is not listed as a player-manager.
Darren's first team coach will be Tommy Taylor (Orient) who had been in the role of Caretaker Manager since Smith left the job.

Withe Leaves
Peter Withe (Southport), who's last known whereabouts on this site was that he was the manager of Thailand, has left his role as coach of Indonesia. This follows the first round exit from the ASEAN Football Championship, a competition he had succeeded winning with Thailand in 2000 and 2002, then finishing as runner-up with Indonesia in 2004.

Tommy Taylor (Orient) has taken temporary charge of Barry Fry (Bedford Town)'s Peterborough United in League Two following the departure of manager, Keith Alexander. Peterborough have lost their last 6 matches and are currently mid-table.

Currently I am updating the Next
Generation
pages for the first time in 18 months, and very hard
going it is, too. in the meantime, through various means
a few additions to the Next Generation / Son and Daughters pages have turned up.
1) Thanks to Yahoo! Groups
sixtiesandseventiessoccer the Hinshelwood dynasty has
come to light. The main connection to Bob's 70-71 Pages
is Martin Hinshelwood (Crystal Palace), though his brother Paul Hinshelwood
(Ex Crystal Palace, Oxford United, Millwall, Colchester
United) does already have his picture on this site (click
Crystal Palace to see), as he was also a
Crytal Palace youth player in the 71-72 season.
Their father, Wally Hinshelwood was also
a player at Fulham, Chelsea, Fulham, Reading, Bristol
City, Millwall, and Newport County.
Martin's son Danny Hinshelwood played
for Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth, Torquay United, and
Brighton and Hove Albion; whilst Paul's sons, Adam
and Paul are both playing for Brighton
now - and their careers are being tracked on the Next
Generation
page.
2) Also I see from 'the Who's Who
Cardiff City' by Dean Hayes (Breedon
Books, 2006) that John Toshack (Cardiff
City) has a
son, Jonathan Toshack, who played for
Swansea City, Bristol City, Cardiff City, and Dundee
between 1988-1991.
3) 'Meadow Lane Men - the Complete Who's Who of Notts County' by Garth Dykes (Yore Publications 2005) also points out that the brothers, Frank Worthington (Huddersfield Town), Dave Worthington (Grimsby Town) and Bobby Worthington (Notts County) had a footballing father called Eric.
It says he was a forward for Halifax Town. He did not play full League games, but may played War-time games. Many thanks to Mike Popplewell for confirmation that Gary Worthington, who mainly played for Darlington, Wrexham and Wigan Athletic, is Dave's son.
Links
One of the new links that turned up whilst updating the Next Generation pages was the complete list of players for Unibond Premiership side, Ashton United, see www.freewebs.com/aufc/
It shows that Joe Royle's son, Darren Royle, who had a long career at Ashton United retired after leaving Radcliffe Borough in September 2005, so his name now leaves the Next Generation update page, but of course will always be found on the Sons and Daughters page.

Smith Leaves
Denis Smith (Stoke City) has left Wrexham of League Two after more than 5 years as the club's manager.

Walter Smith Returns
Walter Smith (Dundee United) has shocked the Scottish Football World by leaving his job as manager of Scotland to rejoin his old club, Rangers, only two years into a four year contract - and reportedly without permission from the Scottish FA to do so.
BBC SPORT Rangers welcome returning legends reports:
Rangers fans will roll out the welcome mat for the dream-ticket management duo of Walter Smith and Ally McCoist.
Paul Le Guen's acrimonious exit as boss was followed by a Scottish Cup loss at Dunfermline - but the arrival of the two Ibrox heroes will lift the gloom.
Smith, 58, helped the blue half of Glasgow dominate the domestic scene in the 90s and has since worked wonders at the helm of the Scottish national team.
And McCoist, 44, is a Gers striking legend, with 355 goals in 581 outings.
There are high hopes that their arrival will herald a return to the glory days.
Rangers have endured two trophyless seasons in their last three campaigns as domestic dominance north of the border has swung to city rivals Celtic.
Such a situation would have seemed singularly preposterous when Smith was last at the club.
After a playing career with Dundee United and Dumbarton, boyhood Rangers supporter Smith cut his teeth in coaching at Tannadice before assuming the position of assistant to Graeme Souness at Ibrox in 1986.
When Souness left for Liverpool in 1991 a seamless transition ensued, with Smith taking the reins.
WITH & WITHOUT SMITH
RANGERS
They won 20 titles in Smith's time at the club
In seven years as manager Smith landed 14 trophies
In eight seasons since Smith left, Gers fans have celebrated 12 titles and CupsHe led the club to seven successive titles, which drew them level with Celtic's famous nine-in-a-row record that was set between 1966 and 1974, and also landed three Scottish Cups and 4 League Cups, including a treble in the 1992/93 season.
His record was slightly marred by a lack of silverware in his final season before upping sticks for the perceived promised land of the Premiership and Everton in 1998.
And at Goodison Park his managerial stock took a further hit.
Smith endured a mixed time on Merseyside as he juggled with financial problems and failed to repeat the success he had enjoyed at Rangers.
"I soon got out of the habit of studying the top end of the League table," he reflected on his time with the Toffees.
Despite bringing a sense of stability to the club the powers that be had not lured him there to stagnate in mid-table.
And as they teetered on the precipice of a relegation battle in 2002, Smith was shown the door after an abysmal defeat at Middlesbrough in his third FA Cup quarter-final with the club.
McCOIST AT RANGERS
'Super Ally' is the club's all-time leading scorer with 355 goals in 581 matches and won Europe's Golden Shoe award in 1992 and 1993
In his 15 seasons with the club Rangers won... 10 league titles
Three Scottish Cups Nine League CupsFollowing a spell on the sidelines, Smith returned to the fray as assistant to fellow Scot Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in March 2004.
And before the end of the year he was back in the big time as Scotland boss, trying to boost the fortunes of the national team after ineffectual reign of Berti Vogts.
The announcement was hailed by a host of Scottish pundits and their faith was repaid.
"The SFA have picked the best man for the job and I see no embarrassment at all in being beaten to it by an exceptional manager," said Gordon Strachan, who at the time had also been in the running to be Scotland boss.
Former national boss Craig Brown added: "His main quality is his coaching ability, backed up by excellent man-management - he manages players well."
And former Scotland striker Charlie Nicholas chimed: "He is a gentleman but if you get on the wrong side of him he will let you know.
"Walter has to put his personality in, help change and modernise the SFA and make a strong impression on it. Then the team will get better and stronger."
Indeed it did.
Smith invited McCoist to join the coaching set-up and soon Scotland were heading in the right direction.
WITH & WITHOUT SMITH SCOTLAND
In the 16 games before Smith took over the national team won just five matches:
W5; D3; L8; F15; A27
In 16 matches at the helm Smith's Scotland won seven games:
W7; D5; L4; F26; A15He won seven of his 16 matches in charge, losing only four. Scotland had lost half their previous 16 games.
And he also turned the goals for and against columns on their head. Under Smith, the Tartan Army celebrated 26 goals and saw only 15 go in at the other end.
The sweetest was Gary Caldwell's winner against World Cup finalists France at Hampden in October 2006 and, despite a defeat in Ukraine in what is now his final match, Smith leaves Scotland top of their qualifying group for Euro 2008 - looking down on France and Italy.
Now comes the task of turning around a Rangers side that is a mammoth 17 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premier League and out of both Scottish Cups.
Rangers caretaker boss Ian Durrant said: "Walter will get the help he needs and will bring in the calibre of player to get the club back on track.
"It's not just a massive job to turn things around, it's a massive job - period - working at Rangers."
Smith knows that already. Forewarned is forearmed.
There's a Circus in the Town...
I thought it very odd that Kevin Keegan was interviewed as a part of media speculation about Walter Smith returning as Rangers manager. It seems that Kev is currently running the Soccer Circus at Xscape based at Braehead in Glasgow, and can reportedly be found helping coach peope who attend the experience.
www.scotland.gov.uk reports:
29/09/2006
Soccer Circus, billed as the world's first interactive indoor soccery attraction, was officially opened at Xscape at Braehead on the south side of Glasgow today.
The concept has been developed by ex-England international Kevin Keegan, Scottish entrepreneur Peter Barr and engineer Clive Mockford. Around £6 million has been invested, including a £500,000 grant from the Executive.
Kevin Keegan said: "Soccer Circus has taken us over nine years to develop. It gives people a real opportunity to experience what it is like to be a professional footballer. I am delighted to be in Glasgow as it is a great football city."
Soccer Circus features a series of skill games using real footballs in a series of interactive and fully automated games designed to have a broad appeal to families and individuals.
Sport Minister Patricia Ferguson said:
"Soccer Circus is a fantastic project won for Scotland in the face of strong international competition. This will not only help open up new tourism and job opportunities but will offer a first-rate educational and leisure facility for young people."
Martin Togneri, chief executive of Scottish Development International, said:
"Soccer Circus and Xscape play a valuable part in the Scottish Enterprise Renfrewshire economic regeneration project which is predicted to create over 700 new jobs and attract more than £250 million of private sector investment. This new attraction will strengthen the Xscape proposition and impact positively on the economic opportunities for Renfrewshire and the Clyde Waterfront regeneration project as a whole."

Dearden Returns
Bill Dearden (Sheffield United) has returned to League football to take over as Manager of League Two side, Mansfield Town.
BBC SPORT Dearden named Mansfield manager reports:
Mansfield have appointed Billy Dearden as their new manager - with the 62-year-old taking over at Field Mill for a second time.
Dearden, who was in charge between June 1999 and January 2002, succeeds Peter Shirtliff, who left on 19 December.
"I know the fans are behind me and I can't wait to start," said Dearden.
His first match in charge will be at Accrington Stanley on Saturday, while caretaker boss Paul Holland will revert to his role as assistant manager.
Dearden has signed a deal that will take him up to the end of the season.
And he added on the club's website: "Talks were long and hard as they always are but we have arrived at a conclusion we are happy with.

"I have known Paul for a number of years, bringing him to the club as a 14-year-old, so we have a lot of history and I am looking forward to working with him."
