The goals came in the 36th, 44th and 58th minutes. He was substituted in the 73rd minute, when it was still 3-1. This was Michael's 70th England cap, and moved his goal tally on to 32, which is fourth in the all time list of England's international goalscorers. See England Goalscorers

Cups,Ups and Downs: 2004-2005

The domestic season's play-offs are finally over, bringing the season belatedly to a close, here's a review of some of the Bob 70-71 Players achievements, or failures in 2005-2006. Only team managers are included in this list.

Sir Alex Ferguson (Falkirk) Manchester United lost the FA Cup Final to Arsenal, see below.

Barry Fry (Bedford Town) Owner / Manager, Barry could not prevent relegation for Peterborough United, who finished 23rd in League One.

Brian Horton (Port Vale): Macclesfield Town reached the League Two Play-offs in 5th place, but were knocked out to Lincoln City in the Play-off semi-finals losing1-0 away and drawing 1-1 at home. Lincoln lost out to Southend United in the Final.

Brian Little (Aston Villa) helped Tranmere Rovers finish third in League One, but the side was not promoted as they lost out in the Play-offs to Hartlepool United. Though they pulled back the first leg 2-0 deficit in the away leg to win 2-0 after 90 minutes in the home leg. The score was unchanged after extra time, and 4-4 at the end of the inital five penalties. However, they lost the penalties in sudden death at 6-5. Hartlepool went on to lose to Sheffield Wednesday in the final.

Martin O'Neill (Distillery) wins the Scottish FA Cup with Celtic, as well as coming second in the League. This was the second Cup win for O'Neill and Celtic in a row. Celtic beat Dundee United 1-0 at Hampton Park.

Harry Redknapp (West Ham United) is the manager of relegated Southampton. The fact he keeps the job is a sign that few blame the manager for the side finishing bottom of the Premiership. However, there was only2 points sepatating the bottom 4!

Joe Royle (Everton) Joe becomes a victim of the Play-off system, when his Ipswich side finish third in the Championship, but are knocked out to West Ham United, the eventual promoted side. Frustratingly Ipswich Town drew the first leg 2-2 away from home, only to lose 2-0 in the home fixture.

Denis Smith (Stoke City) Wrexham were relegated from League One, but only due to the rule that satates that a side going into administration loses ten points. Without the deduction, Wrexham would have survived in 19th place. As it is they were 22nd in the 24 place League. However, Wrexham did win this season's LDV Vans Trophy against Southend United (see 10 April).

Peter Taylor (Southend United) Peter helps Hull City up into the Championship, after finishing as runners-up in League One. This is Peter and Hull City's second promotion in a row!

Stan Ternant (Carlisle United) Gillingham are relegated from the Championship in 22nd position (of 24). Gillingham lost out to goal difference to Crewe Alexandria. Onlyr 4 points extra would have seen the side finish mid-table!

Graham Turner (Chester City) For the second season in a row, Hereford reach the National Conference Play-offs in second place, and once again the club lose out following a 1-1 draw away to Stevenage Borough, and a 1-0 defeat at home.. Stevenage went on to be beaten by Carlisle United in t he final.

And Next Generation...

Martin Allen - son of Dennis Allen (Bournemouth) reached the Play-offs in League One as manager of Brentford. The club finished 4th, but lost their semi-final PSheffield Wednesday, the eventual final winners. They lost both legs,1-0 away and 2-1 at home.

Gary Megson - son of Don Megson (Bristol Rovers) was the manager of Nottingham Forest at the end of their relegation season. They finished 23rd in the Championship, though they were well off bottom place. During the season, the club were also managed by two further Bob 70-71 Players, Paul Hart (Stockport County) till December and Joe Kinnear (Spurs)till February !

28 May

O'Neill Leaves Celtic after Cup win - Robertson Leaves, too

Martin O'Neill (Distillery) has left Celtic as manager. The official reason given is that he intends to look after his wife who is ill. He leaves after leading Celtic to a Scottish Cup victory. Celtic beat Dundee United 1-0 at Hampton Park, to keep the trophy for a second season.

Martin's coaching team of John Robertson (Nottingham Forest) and Steve Walford leave with him.

It is the club's 33rd Scottish Cup win, pulling them 2 ahead of Rangers. During his 5 season spell at the club he has won 7 trophies and is the club's most successful manager since Jock Stein. his place is being taken by Gordon Strachen.

Next Generation News

England beat USA 2-1 on Tour in the States and it is the first match to not feature a next generation star since 2 October 2001. This was the match when England qualified for the 2002 World Cup Finals with a 2-2 draw with Greece thanks to David Beckham's famous 93rd minute free kick strike!

That's an unbroken run of 42 matches due to the inclusion of either Michael Owen, son of Terry Owen (Bradford City), or Frank Lampard, son of Frank Lampard . (Or both, of course)..

Asa Leaves

Paolo Maldini, son of Cesare Maldini (AC Milan), plays in the UEFA Champions League Final, and it looked like he had sewn up his 5th European Cup / Champions League winners' medal when AC Milan went in 3-0 at half time, Paulo having scored the first goal in the opening minute! Unbelievably Liverpool came back in the second half to tie the match at 3-3, held out through extra time and went on to win the match on penalties.

It is the 5th time Liverpool have one the trophy. Liverpool goalkeeper, Jerzy Dudek played homage to Bruce Grobbelaar's penalty shootout antics by imitating his wobbly-leg routine when Liverpool last won the same Cup the last time against Roma in 1984.

Paulo's goal in 51 seconds is the final's fastest ever goal, and at 38 he is the oldest sever corer in a European Cup / Champions League Final also. Paulo and his father Cesare are the only father and son to both captain a European Cup winning side when Cesaro captained the 1962-63 AC Milan winning team, and Paulo the 2002-2003 AC Milan winning side.

Paolo has thus now won the trophy 4 times (1989,1990, 1994, 2003) and been runners-up 3 times (1993, 1995, 2005), all with AC Milan.

Jim Smith's (Boston United) contract as assistant manger to Harry Redknapp is not renewed following their relegation from the Premiership.

Lennie Lawrence has stepped down as manager of Cardiff City after 3 and a half years. Cardiff were at the relegation end of the Championship last season. He will be staying on in a 'Consultancy role' for 6 months. Lennie was a non-League player around about 1970-71, though I remain uncertain as to his placing on the site at present.

FA Cup Final 2005

Defending FA Cup holders Manchester United, under Sir Alex Ferguson, reached the FA Cup Final for the 17th time, a record they share with thier opponents, Arsenal. This is the only the second time both teams have met, the previous time being 1978's classic Arsenal 3-2 win.

The match went to extra time for the first time since Arsenal ultimately beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 in 1993.

For the first time since Barnsley's ultimate victory over West Brom in 1912, and for only the 5th time ever, it stayed at 0-0 after extra time, but for the first time ever the match was decided on the day - replays now being a thing of the past.

And it was Arsenal that won the penalty shootout, 5-4, giving them their 10th FA Cup win - a total only one behind Manchester United. This was Arsenal's third win in four seasons.

Email Subject: Players struck by lightning.

Hello Bob.

Could you please tell me if you have any recollection of players struck and unfortunately killed by lightning during a match in the 60s or 70s? I believe the players were from Alverchurch FC. I would appreciate any information you can give me. Regards.

We’ll now try and turn all our footage into a fab movie.

Keetley Brothers

Earlier in the year Trevor Bugg at the Association of Football Statisticians informed me that there was a quest on to find if the three Holsgrove brothers scoring in the same game was unique. And guess who stumbled on the information that led to finding out there is another example...? Please visit The Association of Football Statisticians, where you will find the following fascinating story:

Early in the year, we were of the belief that a unique event in English football could have occurred when three Holsgrove brothers all scored in Windsor & Eton’s 3-3 draw with Heybridge Swifts in a Ryman League Premier Division game on Saturday 8 January 2005. We now know that – although very rare – it is not the first time it has happened.

Paul, Peter and Lee all put the Holsgrove name on the score sheet for the Royalists at Stag Meadow.

We are now aware that three other brothers – Tom, Frank and Harry Keetley – all scored for Doncaster Rovers in a 5-1 win against Durham City in the Third Division (North) at Belle Vue on 9 April 1927.

The lads were three of the 11 sons (and one daughter) of Mr and Mrs William Keetley of Graham Street in Derby.

Nine of the boys went on to play for a local amateur team called Victoria Ironworks, six of them played in the Football League and, generally, they weren’t lacking in the ability of scoring goals.

Tom, who also played for Derby County, Bradford Park Avenue, Notts County, Lincoln City and Gresley Rovers, became one of the first greats in Doncaster’s history by virtue of 180 goals in 231 league appearances including six against Ashington on 16 February 1929.

He wasn’t the only Keetley to hit six. Frank did it for Lincoln City in the space of 21 minutes in a 9-1 drubbing of Halifax Town on 16 January 1932. Usually operating as a winger, Frank counted Derby County, Bradford City, Hull City, Margate and Worcester City amongst his other clubs.

Tom, Frank and Harry were joined at Doncaster by Joe – also of Bolton Wanderers, Accrington Stanley, Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Wrexham and Horwich RMI.

All four were signed by manager Dick Ray who went on to sign a fifth Keetley – Charlie – when he was later in charge of Leeds United. In keeping with the family tradition, Charlie – later of Bradford City and Reading – made himself popular with an avalanche of goals. He started scoring on his debut against South Shields on 31 December 1927 and went on to score 110 goals in 169 games during his time at Elland Road.

Albert made three appearances in the Football League for Burton United while Billy, Arthur and Jack all played professionally. The two remaining brothers (named in various sources as either Sid and Lawrence or George and Jim) played at amateur level.

We would like to thank Bob Dunning for his help. His football speciality is the 1970-71 season as you’ll discover at his
Bob and the 1970-71 Footballers site.

700 + Club

Congratulations to Andy Melville for becoming the 38th player to have ever played 700 English League games. See 700+ Club. Andy became the season's only new edition, playing for Nottingham Forest in a 1-0 away defeat against Reading in the Championship. Sadly Forest look like they are going to be relegated this season. Andy is also the only player in the exclusive 38 person club to add to his total this season. Neil Redfearn is playing regularly, but his club, Scarborough, are now non-League.

Congratulations also goes to Bournemouth's Steve Fletcher, who on this same day, matched Sean O'Driscoll's club record of 423 League games. And boy did he do it in style ?! The away fixture at Chesterfield was going 1-0 the home team's way when Steve equalised in the 47th minute. Bournemouth then took the lead, but Chesterfiled pulled it back to 2-2, only for Steve to score his second of the match in injury time to give Bournemouth a 3-2 victory!

See Club League Appearance Records - note that this page is only updated at the end of the season.

Many thanks to Thomas Søfting for alerting me of the approach of these records.

Frank Lampard, son of Frank Lampard, scores his 18th goal (including goals for England and in all competitions) of the season in Chelsea's Champions League Quater-Final 6-5 aggregate victory v Bayern Munich. Though Chelsea lost 3-2 on the night in Germnay, Lampard's 30th minute openner gave them an early advantage in a game which they started 4-2 up from the home first leg.

Chelsea looked certain of victory on the night itself, as they were 2-1 up going into the final minute, but 2 very late strikes by Bayern jittered a few nerves, but ultimately only served to save the German club's face.

Frank has now played a staggering 59 matches since August including games for Chelsea and England. For Chelsea, he has missed only one FA Cup tie in a season that they have been pushing for all 4 possible trophies. Although they were knocked out of the FA Cup in the 5th round, they have now bagged the League Cup, led from the front in the Premiership all season, and have reached the Champions League semi-final, in which they will face Liverpool.

Chelsea goalkeeper, Carlo Cudicini, son of Fabio Cudicini (AC Milan), was on also on the bench for the Quater-Final match.

Meanwhile, Paolo Maldini - son of Cesare Maldini (AC Milan) - is in the AC Milan side and Juan Sebastián Verón -son of Juan Ramón Verón (Estudiantes de La Plata)- is in the Inter Milan side for both games in their Champions League Quarter-Final clash at their shared San Siro Stadium.

AC won their 'home' designated leg 2-0, but in the 73rd minute of the 'away' second leg, when AC were leading 1-0 on the night, the Inter fans started throwing missiles on to the pitch. Play stopped for 20 minutes, and was then abandoned after 30 seconds more play. AC have provsionally been awarded the tie, and will play PSV Eindhoven of the Netherlands.

N.B. The tie was indeed awarded to AC Milan. Inter Milan were fined 132,000 pounds and made to play the next 4 games behind closed doors.

Incidentally, Liverpool's Neil Mellor - son of Ian Mellor (Manchester City)- was not even on the bench in either game of his club's 2-1 aggregate victory over Juventus, in their Champions League Quarter-Final.

Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex Ferguson, and Shaun Pejic, nephew of Mike Pejic (Stoke City) and son of Mel Pejic were both in the Wrexham team that won the LDV Vans Trophy at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff against Southend.

Shaun was a substitute, and joined the match in the 19th minute. There were no goals in the first 90 minutes, so the game went into extra time. Juan Ugarte opened the scoring for Wrexham in the 99th minute and Darren scored another in the 118th minute, to give the side a 2-0 victory.

Sheffield United's Andy Gray, son of Frank Gray , scores two goals against his old club, Leeds United at Elland Road in what was a 4-0 drubbing of the home side.

Sheffield United have been Leeds United's nemesis in the past few seasons, and this win should confirm the club as this season's highest placed Yorkshire side. (Except for a few old-timers who consider Middlesbrough a part of North Yorkshire!)

Leeds United released Andy's Uncle, Eddie Gray as caretaker manager at the end of last season, and presently has Eddie's son (Andy's cousin) Nick Gray in the reserves, though he is yet to make a first team appearance.

Incidentally, the match also saw Ian Moore, son of Ronnie Moore (Tranmere Rovers), come on for Leeds United in the 53rd minute when the score was just 0-3 - his second game for the club, and Andy Liddell - son of Garry Liddell (Leeds United)- was on Sheffield United's bench, though he didn't play.

Eddie's other son, Stuart Gray also plays League football at Rushden and Diamonds

Thanks to Han van Eijden the Feijenoord now have a 1970-71 picture added to the page.

No particular reason, but I took a little time to add a few more reletives to the site from Robert Hutton Moss's 1983 book The Book of Football lists. An Encyclopedia of Football Facts (London, A Star Book Star). This fun book has 11 pages of footballing relatives. Most of them are already on the site, but some still haven't passed onto this page yet.

The new additions are:
Nephew: Alan Dugdale (
Coventry City) and Uncle: Jimmy Dugdale (West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, QPR and England 'B')
Nephew: Dennis Butler (
Rochdale) and Uncle: Billy Butler (Bolton Wanderers, Reading and England)
Nephew: Warwick Rimmer (Bolton Wanderes) and Uncle: Ellis Rimmer (Tranmere Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and England)

And the following Next Generation relations:
Nephew: Phil Sproson (ex Port Vale, Birmingham City - loan) and Uncle: Roy Sproson (
Port Vale)
Nephew: Billy Wright (ex Everton, Birmingham City, Chester City - loan, Carlisle United) and Uncle: Tommy Wright (
Everton)

Of the above, the following are brand new to the site - Jimmy Dugdale, Billy Butler, Warwick Rimmer, Ellis Rimmer, Phil Sproson and Billy Wright.

Whilst adding Bolton Wanderer's 70-71 Captain, Warwick Rimmer to the site, I also added all the Rothmans 70-71 Bolton Wanderers players for the first time, too.
