F.A.Cup Final News

Aston Villa - back in 1970-71 Aston Villa were the team that had won the FA Cup more than any other team. Their seven victories being ahead of Blacburn Rovers and Newcastle United's six. None of these teams have added to their totals and Villa have not won the Cup since defeating Manchester United in 1957. Non-entering Manchester United are now the team with the most F.A.Cup wins -ten, next is Spurs' eight and Arsenal have joined Villa on seven.

In 70-71 Villa were also the team with the joint most ever semi-final appearances with 17 along with West Bromwich Albion. Now Villa and West Brom are equal fifth with 19 appearances.Everton lead with twenty-three !

Amazingly, in 1970-71 Villa were beaten in the first round 3-1 to Torquay United, and it barely caused a stir !!!

Chelsea - back in 1970-71 Chelsea were the Cup holders having won it for their first time at the third attempt, against Leeds United. The game went to a replay at Old Trafford and is consequently the last time the Cup was won outside of Wembly. This year, of course is Wembly's 73rd and last ever Cup Final.

Chelsea won the Cup for the second time as recently as 1997 having lost in 1994. Their defence in 1970-71 only lasted to the fourth round when Manchester City beat them 3-0 at home. Man City lost in the next round to the double winners Arsenal.

Fantasy Football

Dubbed as the 'vote with no balls' ...it is nevertheless with immense delight that I can announce the winner of the Quizlet vote to establish the female with the greatest influence on the male game in England. Amazingly it was actually a female footballer ... well sort of. Yes, the winner by a clear 3 per cent of the vote was 'Gregory's Girl (1981)' (click to see some details). This winner says something VERY sad about the general readership of Bob's 70-71 page ... and I thank you from the heart. See Quizlet.
