November 2000

Appologies for the long time it's taken to update this page.

George Holmes Ex-from Middlesbrough wrote a couple of times

Hi bob,   I knew a site now I have forgotten it. It had info on every club and player since 1946, do you know it, or a site similar?

... It was to settle a difference of opinion really, did Brian Clough (Derby County manage ) ever play against and score against Charlie Hurley (Sunderland - Bolton on this site, Bob) and Jackie Charlton (Leeds) in the sixties.

The site I was looking for does exist because I logged on to it, the address was in the Daily Mirror or the Daily Express several weeks ago.

Hope you can help   George Holmes

Well I did eventually find the site, which is the very fabulous www.soccer-files.com, which I both loathe and despise because it does the job I try to do, only better, and love because it's a fantastic, thorough and efficient resourse. I've since linked to it all over the place.

As for the answer to George's query, I don't think the site will have helped so does anyone else know ?? I'll pass it on if his e-mail's not changed !!

Chris Cook wrote a great mail about the Notts County 70-71 season

Hi

First Notts game I saw was Tony Hateley's first.

As I recall it was vs Northampton, we won 1-0 and Tony scored from a (Crickmore?) cross in front of a 21,000 crowd.

And I don't recall us losing any more games that year, I might be wrong.

What a decade that was.

Highlights:

A Brian Stubbs headed goal from the edge of the area at Bolton (3-1 win I think).

Ian Scanlon's incredible hat trick in about three minutes.

Don Masson long passes.

Bill Brindley in tears when he broke someone's leg (pure bad luck) about two
yards from where I was standing.

The only goal I ever saw Bob ("Plant pot") Worthington score, in the last minute to get a 1-1 draw.  I was practically the last one out over the Kop and no-one would believe me when I told them what the noise was about!

and so on.

Great days.

Great site. (Thanks ! - Bob)

Regards

Chris Cook

The most unjust one-sided loss (1-0) ever seen vs Aston Villa on Match of the Day (we got stuffed at meadow lane though).

Thanks for that Chris, I really enjoyed getting that one, I've since added the Notts County picture by way of reward !

Nigel Mercer The guestbook highlighted a site to me that I didn't know about which has EVERY (well almost) picture from the World of Soccer Stars on it. I'm in the process of adding links to every page where they're relevant. I wrote to Nigel who replied ...

I've visited your site before, and share your love for the period and for the FKS cards. I love the way that you bring the cards to life through following them to the present day - keep up the good work. Pages like yours (history and significance) are the best ones to visit and enjoy.

The site is at British Football Cards Collector's Gallery and it's well worth a visit. Thanks for your comments, Nigel.

Sandy wrote

Hi there Hope you can help me - can you tell me which Scottish football club George Best played for in the 1979-80 season, and how many times did he play for them? Thanks in advance Sandy

George played for Hiberian that season - I know he played 13 league games and scored 3 times, but I'm not sure about other competitions.

Kev wrote

Do you have any idea what the full Leeds squad for the European Cup Semi-final against Celtic was during 1969/70 season
You can help settle a bet!
Cheers

Kev

I replied that the teams were :

1st leg Sprake, Reaney, Cooper, Bremner,
Charlton, Madeley, Lorimer, Clarke, Jones, Giles, E.Gray Sub:Bates.

2nd leg: Sprake, Madeley, Cooper,
Bremner, Charlton, Hunter, Lorimer, Clarke, Jones, Giles, E.Gray: Sub: Harvey,
Bates.

I'm not sure I'll be able to trace any others who went along and didn't play. What was the bet I'll see if I can find out more specific information ?

Kev replied

Thanks for the information which doesn't seem to exist on the net.

The bet was for

Leeds Utd in 1969/70 were semi finalists, European Cup, FA Cup and English League Cup, also Leading English Championship and ended up not winning any off these competions. There was a bit off a doubt  regarding whether Reaney played in the European Cup Semi . Between us we managed to get the rest correct.

Thanks for the information which has settled a few debates

Cheers

Kev

Well it's nice to actually be of help for once ...

Bob,

'70-'71 Footballers site is one of the best on the Web. Many (if not most) football-related sites are deadly boring, but "70" is always great fun. The one most striking thing about that era to me in reviewing your site?--the unbelievable amount of talent of that Leeds Utd. team!

Bill Owens

Thanks for that Bill, and you are so right I doubt the Premiership side could get such a talented team to stay together for as many years as Leeds did at this time, it really was one of the greatest teams ever.

John Holt says

hi,     I am John Holt and am trying to get in touch with an old school friend, Rob Worthington, Franks son. If you have any idea how I can do this please could you E-mail me . Cheers.          Best wishes           John Holt.

Well I don't does anyone else ?

Penny Atkinson writes :

I think it is very wise of you to be supporting Leeds and your website is very good, it has helped me a lot with my project.

I think that Leeds are the best and as soon as Fergie retires from Man.U they will go down and Leeds and Arsenal and Liverpool and that set of teams shall rise.

Brilliant website and obviously a very wise man.

It's not very wise staying up till 5 am writing this email update, Penny, but thanks VERY much for your vote of confidence, I really appreciate it. I agree with everything you've written in your mail. I'm really pleased it helped with your project.

Kåre B writes

Did Denis Law really send Man U down? I've heard/read several times this is one of football great myths. There was an article on this in FourFourTwo  last year, where Tommy Docherty was quoted saying,"people say City and Denis Law put us down, but that's a lot of crap. It didn't matter whether we'd won 1-0 or 10-0 that day. Our safety hinged on Birmingham losing at Norwich, if only to give us a lifeline". B'ham won,
and Man U were relegated.

Lou Macari writes about this in his autobiography 'United - we shall not be moved'. According to him, the situation at kick-off on April 27 1974 was:

West Ham    41 games/36 points
Birmingham  41 g/35 p
----------------------
Southampton 41 g/34 p
Man Utd     39 g/32 p
Norwich     40 g/29 p

S'hampton and B'ham won their games (2 points), West Ham drew and United lost. United had 2 games in hand, but needed 5 points to survive.Doesn't this prove Docherty wrong? With one point against City, United could survive if they won their final 2 games. United lost both, but still ended up with better for/against score than B'ham.

Well, who is right? You, Macari or Docherty?

Anyway, thanks for a very good site. I've followed English football since the early 70's so this site is just what I need! (Great - thanks, Bob)
