apologies for everyone who has emailed the site, but
whose information still has not been included... I do
keep every email, save for the odd computer crash, but it
is a slow process getting mails up onto the site.
Please
continue to email the site, virtually every email is
responded to within a week or so.
Due to the
excessive spam mail I receive (180 a day presently),
please remember to include a useful subject title, to

Celtic players with Rangers fathers
I
was wondering if you could tell me the names of 4
Celtic players whose fathers played for Rangers from
1967 onwards??????
This would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Miss Laura Little
I can't
name one ! Can anyone help ?
Subject: Just a question
Please could you tell me how many times Leeds have
beaten Chelsea 7 nill on their home ground since
1950-2004 ? Which players were playing ? And if you
could tell me if the following players were
included: (1) Billy Bremner.
(2 )Gary Sprake.
(3 Norman Hunter. (4 ) Peter
Lorimer.
Many thanx.
Gary King
Well Leeds did beat Chelsea 7-0
at home on 7 October, 1967 the Leeds team was (scorers in
brackets): Gary Sprake, Paul Reaney, Paul Madeley,
Billy Bremner (1), Jackie Charlton (1), Norman Hunter,
Jimmy Greenhoff (1), Peter Lorimer (1), Mick Jones,
Eddie Gray (1), Albert Johanneson (1). Sub: Terry
Hibbitt for Jones. (Own goal - Hinton).
I asked Gary how come he asked,
and he replied...
Hi and
thanx for getting back to me.
I am going
round all the teams that were in the 1st
Division now the Premier Leauge. from 1960 till 2004
what I am trying to find out is what the teams
were like in the days of players like Peter Shilton
and how the game has changed in recent times.
Also my Dad is a long time Leeds fan and I have
always supported Chelsea. Me and my dad are always
having rows with each other saying that Leeds are the
best and me saying Chelsea are the best.
Thank you very much for getting back to me.
Many thanx
Gary
Natrually, I replied...
As an internet authority on football, and
using all manner of computing calculations and
extrapolations, I can inform you that it is your Dad that
is right. Leeds United are simply the best team of any in
the history of football. Chelsea are a weak sixth
behind Leeds, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle
United.
I hope this helps, Bob Leeds United season
ticket holder :-)
Was that unfair ????
Subject: John Connelly
For
which club team did John Connelly (Bury) play just before the
World Cup finals in 1966?
Victor Denaro
He was still at
Manchester United. He moved to Blackburn Rovers in
September 1966.
Victor replied...
I come from
Malta and last Friday I had a football trivia
issue with a tennis mate of mine, Alan Sunderland (ex
Wolves, Arsenal, Ipswich, England in the 80s), who is
now a resident here in Malta. We argued about the 1966
squad, specifically John Connelly. I was sure he
played for Celtic. Was he ever a Celtic player? Alan
was sure he played for Burnley. Did he any time in
his career?
John Connelly began his
professional career at Burnley playing over 200 games for
them before going to Man U. From there he went on to
Blackburn Rovers then Bury. Now my source does not list
Scottish clubs, but I'm afraid that doesn't look like a
career trajectory that's heading to Celtic ! I believe you are thinking of George Connelly,
who played for Celtic.
Incidentally, I'm a
Leeds United fan, but one of the most excited I've ever ever
got watching a football match has got to
be Alan's winner in the FA Cup - what a moment !

Daily Mirror Cards
Hi,
Excellent site really enjoying it. (Thanks- Bob)
One question..........
I see you use a lot of the Daily Mirror Cards in your
photographs, did you ever get the full set ?
The Daily
Mirror still owe my old man money and me about 30
cards. (I was 8 at the time) :-)
Best regards, Ian.
Hoho, I
dare say Robert Maxwell ran off with the money and his
sons still have the cards in their collection somewhere !
I would write and ask them if I were you.
No I never did get a full set I'm truely amazed you
collected enough for thirty, unless you mean the small
ones ... actually come to think of it I did get a full
set of the small ones. They are worth nothing now though
because being around 8 myself, I wrote all over them !
The pictures on the site are the large ones you had to
save up for, and the only one I got - or wanted at the
time was the Leeds United one. The pictures you see are
images I found on ebay many years ago.
Anyway, thanks for your comments on the site. I hope you
get hold of those cards !!!

Leeds v Forest early 1972
Hello Bob,
Could I ask a favour? Could you give me the half-time
score and final score, if possible, of Leeds United v
Forest in early 1972. I am working with Tommy Gemmell
(Celtic), the former Forest player,
on his autobiography and he refers to this match.
Hope you can help.
Thanks
Graham McColl
Wow, as a Leeds
United fan, this was a game to remember, I see....
According to Rothmans 72-73 the half time score was 1-1,
and it ended 6-1 to Leeds !. It was played on 27 March
1972, Lorimer, Eddie Gray and Clarke all scored 2 each.
Cormack scored for Forest.
It followed famous victories earlier in the year. On 19
February Leeds beat Man U 5-1, and in the next League
match on 4 March they beat Southampton 7-0, in a game
televised by Match of the Day. 'It's almost cruel' Barry
Davies commentated. Those were the days...
I hope it wasn't responsible for Tommy returning to
Scotland. That's a biography I'll look forward to, good
luck with it. Graham tells me it should be out in Autumn.
Incidenatlly I also
asked Graham a question, about the whereabouts of John
Gorman in 1970-71 season, I always had him on the
Carlisle United page.
Subject:
John Gorman
John
Gorman actually left Celtic at the beginning of the
1970-71 season, moving to Carlisle United in
September 1970, where he spent six years before
joining Tottenham. He had only made one full
appearance for Celtic but it was a significant match,
against Hamilton Accies in 1968 on a night when Kenny
Dalglish also made his debut. Tommy Gemmell and Danny
McGrain were John's close competitors for a full-back
place at Celtic so he had his hands full in trying to
break into the team.
Thanks for that,
George. I have now moved John from the Carlisle United to
the Celtic
page.

Shirt Number for Whymark
Do you know what Trevor Whymark's (Ipswich
Town)
shirt number was? Was it #11?
Old ITFC fan
Even though it was
before the days of squad numbers, looking at Old Rothmans
I see that Trevor played all but a couple of games for
Ipswich wearing the number 10 shirt,
July Update
Subject: FW: Peter Houseman
Dear
Bob,
Whilst
thumbing through your website I noticed very little
info regarding the late Peter Houseman; no obituary
or any other information. Can you tell me any more?
Best
regards,
Mike
Farrier
Thanks
for the suggestion, I have now started a page with
pictures and information, see Peter
Houseman.
Whilst
looking on the Net I came across a junior league named
after Peter Houseman. It must be the same Peter, I
asked...
You
are correct. Peter Houseman lived at Oakley near
Basingstoke in Hampshire and he and his wife Sally
did a great deal to foster boys football in this area
before their untimely death. For further information
go to Oakley FC

Gerry Dutton
Thanks
for the reply Gerry. Also see Peter Houseman - phyl.co.uk

Robert Sloane( Goalkeeper For Wolves?,When).
Dear
Bob,
Can anyone please tell me if a Robert Sloane, was
once a Keeper for Wolves. He would be around 70 or 80
years old now, he also played in Scotland for
Dunfermline, or so I'm told. Can anyone shed any
light on this matter?
yours with thanks
R. Wright. (Newcastle on Tyne)
Anyone
know ???
Subject: 1970 squad
Hi,
Great site, (Thanks - Bob) but searched all over and
cant find the information I am after so
wondered if in the recesses of your mind you can pull
out the answer to this little question that has
bugged me for years
..who were the unlucky four
who were omitted when the 1970 squad was reduced from
26 to 22 ?
I have an idea they might be Peter Shilton, Bob
McNab, Peter Thompson and Ian Storey-Moore but I am
not at all sure. I was 13 at the time and was worried
Peter Osgood would not go and was overjoyed when he
was included.
Regards
Rod
Blakeman
The squad was actually
reduced from 28 to 22. The unlucky six were David
Sadler, Peter Thompson, Ralph
Coates, Peter Shilton, Bob
McNab, and Brian Kidd. Ian
Storey-Moore was included on the Esso coins and in the
FKS Mexico 1970 World Cup book, but did not make the
squad of 28.
As you say Peter Osgood made the 22 , but only played
against Romania and Czechoslovakia, as a substitute in
both games, and didn't play for England again until 1974.
See Star Players of Mexico 1970
See Email August 2001, for a list of the final squad
and other hopefuls at that time.
June Update
Subject:
Franz Beckenbaur: West Germany
Hi Bob,
Can you confirm for me if Franz Beckenbaur (Star
Players of Mexico 1970) was actually born at Cork
Airport Ireland on the way home from America.
SNAX
Well that's the
very first I've heard of it. The books I've read say he
was born in Munich, where did you hear differently ?

Re: Crystal Palace 1970/71
I
personally am curious to know what happened to two
Danes, Borge Thorup (full-back) and Per Bartram
(centre-forward) who Palace signed around 1970.
They
were the original foreign imports. At that time the
English Clubs couldn't sign players directly from
abroad; these two were transferred from at Scots club
(St. Mirren??) It would be interesting to know what
happened to them.
Regards
Bob Brown
Yes, they
signed for Morton played a few games each in the 69-70
season, then moved on, so Where did they go. Anyone know
? I'll ask Tony Bowden, he usually knows !
And Tony
did ...
I
certainly remember Bartram & Thorup. There was so
much trouble and hassle when Palace tried to sign
them from Morton, because they were Danish. Not like
today!
Per
Bartram joined Palace August 1969 only made 8(2)
appearences 2 goals. League Cup 1(1) 1 goal. Went
back to Morton on loan in the 70-71 season, and then
signed for them, did not play in any games for Palace
that season. I should imagine went back to Denmark.
Borge Thorup joined Palace March 1969, only played as
a sub in 1 game for Palace Boxing Day 1969 at
Tottenham (I was there). He was with Palace 70-71
without playing in the team. He also went back to
Morton August 1971 and had a trial at Hereford and
played a few games for Clydebank from December 1972.
He also possibly went back to Denmark.
Thanks once again,
Tony. See Per Bartram (Crystal
Palace) and Borge Thorup
(Crystal Palace)
Subject:
Dennis Burnett, Haugar
(See
Where are they now ? Summer
2004.
I asked Roald more about Haugar and this was his reply)
Haugar
are currently playing in the Norwegian 4th Division.
We played in the 2nd Division in 1993, but then we
together with another local club formed FK Haugesund
who took our place, and Haugar had to start again in
the 7th Division. FK Haugesund is currently playing
in the 1st Division, looking for promotion, with the
former Assistant Manager of Norway, Harald Aabrekk,
as manager.
The
club has 3 players in the Norwegian U21-team,
including the captain and playmaker Christian
Grindheim, who is an old Haugar-player
Today
Haugar has a womens team in the 1st Division, and if
there are to be new honours for the club, it will
certainly have to come from the womens side.
Haugars
honours
1961 -
FA Cup Final : Lost 7-0 to Fredrikstad (still a
record for the competition), but is still the only
3rd Division team to play in a FA Cup Final.
1979 -
FA Cup Final : Beaten finalists. Lost 2-1 to
Viking after taking the lead through Dean Mooney
(later of Bournemouth). Then Viking scored from
a penalty and an own goal.
1980 -
UEFA Cup Winners Cup : Beat
Sion, Switzerland in the first round, but lost out to
Newport 6-0 on aggregate in the second round. (Viking
took the double in 1979, so Haugar qualified for
Europe)
1981 -
Norwegian Premier League : Our only season in
the top flight. 11 draws and two victories frtom 22
games, wasn't enough to stay in the
division.
English
players who have been playing for Haugar (and
are worth mentioning): Dennis Burnett
(ex. West Ham, Millwall, Hull and
Brighton)
Barry
Salvage (ex. Queens Park Rangers, Brentford, Millwall, Brighton)
Dean
Mooney (Came as an non-league player, sold to Sweden
and then returned to Bournemouth. Currently joint
manager at Poole Town)
Peter
Osborne (ex. Gravesend and Northfleet)
The
most famous English player to play in Haugesund was
Martin Chivers (Spurs) who played for
our main rivals Vard.
We
also had former Wolves midfielder Dale Rudge playing
for Djerv 1919, but Dennis Burnett and Dean Mooney
where the players who made most impact and they are
both still well remembered and talked about, 25 years
after they left....
Fianlly,
I just like to say that I enjoy your site. Although I
was born in 1967, I early became a football fanatic
and had an older brother who was buying Shoot! and
Goal at the time, so it was a kind of re-living
my childhood.
Keep
up the good work.
