The team photo shown on the Retro Rovers page of the program issued for the Bristol Rovers versus Torqay United match is causing much interest and discussion. Can you help us to identify the reserve keeper, in the back row, and the player on his left (r.h. side as we look). Several names have been offered, but we need confirmation. Can you help? Hope you can come up with the answer . Pete
Bristol Rovers 1970-71

From left to right the back row are; Harold Jarman, Wayne Jones, ???, ???, Bobby Jones.
Middle row ; Carl Gilbert, Frankie Prince, Tony Ford, Dick Sheppard, Stuart Taylor, Linsay Parsons, Alex Munro.
Front row; Bobby Campbell, Phil Roberts, RayGraydon, Robin Stubbs, Sandy Allen, Bryn Jones, Peter Higgins, and Don Megson.

After an exchange of several emails, I eventually came across a photo taken at the same time as the above in the October 1970 edition of 'Charles Buchan Monthly'.

The elusive players are Laurie (aka 'Larry') Taylor (goalie) and
John Tedesco. The photo has now been added to the Bristol Rovers page - so thanks for that Pete.

Thomas Kuhndt in a similar vein sent me a great picture of Leeds United in 1970-71, with the following queries.

Hi Bob, first many greetings from Dresden. Your Website is very good!!!!!!!! (Thanks- Bob) In 1970 I saw AFC Leeds United versus Dresden here in the Fairs Cup 2nd round (Dynamo won 2-1). However, Leeds United FC went on to win the Fairs-Cup. In the 3rd round Leeds played Sparta Prag (Czechoslovakia) and from the away game (Prag) I have an original team-photo of Leeds United but I have one little problem!

Can you please help me perhaps? This team-photo does not come with the names . Also I do not have the LUFC-start-formation from this match. I have looked in other Leeds United-team-photos, books and magazins as well as your Website and I have found some names, but not all of them. So I've made a scan-copy and sent you this picture and the names I have. I hope that you can give me the missing names please

You are my last chance. I thank you in advance and wish you all the best. My kind regards to you. Thomas Kuhndt

Back row (left to right):     Hunter, Madeley (???), ???, (Wales-goalkeeper), Cooper (the best England-back!!!), ???
Front row:    Sprake (the best A. Clarke (???), Lorimer (???), Bremner (the best!!!!!!!!), Gray (???), Reaney

Leeds United Dec 9 1970 v Sparta Prague

Back row: Norman Hunter, Paul Madeley, Peter Lorimer, Gary Sprake, Terry Cooper, Rod Belfitt.
Front row: Allan Clarke, Mick Bates, Billy Bremner, Eddie Gray, Paul Reaney.

What a great picture, thanks !And thanks for the kind comments about the site. The team photo line up can be seen under the photo.

What a great team !!!!

The Leeds team that day v Dynamo Dresden was as follows: Gary Sprake; Nigel Davey, Paul Madeley, Billy Bremner, Jackie Charlton, Norman Hunter, Peter Lorimer, Allan Clarke, Mick Jones, Johnny Giles, Mick Bates.

Mick Jones got the Leeds goal that got us through on the away-goal's rule.

Did you want the line up from the Sparta away game ?

Gary Sprake (David Harvey); Paul Reaney, Terry Cooper, Billy Bremner, Paul Madeley, Norman Hunter (Terry Yorath), Peter Lorimer, Allan Clarke, Rod Belfitt, Mick Bates, Eddie Gray.

Gray, Clarke and Belfitt scored the goals in a 3-2 victory (9-2 on aggregate !)

Thomas replied
Hi Bob,
Thank you very much for the names and all the informations. It this SUPER and finally I have this teamphoto "complete" (with the names). Yes, Leeds United 1970-71 - what VERY great team, I think the best from Europe.

To the games v Dynamo Dresden.
This was the DD-formations: Kallenbach - Doerner - Ganzera, K. Sammer (the dad from the ex-German international and today Borussia Dortmund-Manager Matthias Sammer), Kern, Haustein - Hemp, Ziegler, Kreische - Heidler, Richter.
Leeds scored a penalty (Lorimer)

In Dresden: (21 - 10 - 1970) Kallenbach - Doerner - Ganzera, Klaus Sammer, Haustein - Hemp, Kreische, Ziegler - Riedel (76th Geyer - today the Manager from the Budesligateam Energie Cottbus) Richter, Sachse, Heidler. The DD-goals scored by: Hemp (15.) and Kreische (64)

Best regards Thomas

Thomas has since written several more times since with lots of great photos of the Dresden team. I've still got to put them all up yet, but you can see some of them on Dynamo Dresden's page.

Kåre B writes in response to a previous enquiry in July 2001

Bob,

I think I've found out when
Bobby Moore played his 1000th senior game. According to the biography 'Bobby Moore' by Jeff Powell, Moore played his 1000th game in senior football ("first class appearance") for Fulham at Blackburn on Saturday 14, May 1977. This was the last match of the season, and Fulham lost 0-1.
Kåre

That's brilliant Kåre. It's all too rare that people answer queries posted by the site, so I really do appreciate it when someone does. Thanks very much.

Kåre wrote again later in the month

Bob,

Gordon Banks, Keith Newton, Tommy Wright, Terry Cooper, Alan Mullery, Brian Labone, Bobby Moore, Francis Lee, Peter Osgood, Alan Ball,
Bobby Charlton, Jackie Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Jeff Astle, Colin Bell, Allan Clarke, Peter Bonetti, Norman Hunter....

These 19 players played in the World Cup finals in Mexico, but who were the
remaining three in England's squad?

And do you remember if there were any players surprisingly not selected when Sir Alf named his final squad of 22?

I believe Alan Hudson was were disappointed when he wasn't picked...

I've always been fascinated by Mexico '70, probably because it's the first
World Cup I can remember glimpses of. I've even considered making a web
site on the tournament. Those were the days .... ;)

Kåre

The missing three are Alex Stepney, Nobby Stiles and Emlyn Hughes, who are the three selected squad players who didn't get a game.

I've got a book which lists the 'original selections' of all the countries and it includes a long list of English possibles, which makes interesting reading

It includes the 22 plus: Mike Bailey, Ralph Coates, Colin Harvey, John Hollins, Alan Hudson, Mick Jones, Brian Kidd, Roy McFarland, Bob McNab, Jim Montgomery, Alan Oakes, Joe Royle, David Sadler, Peter Shilton, Peter Simpson, Tommy Smith, Mike Summerbee, Peter Thompson.

One of the headline decisions was when Paul Madeley did not make himself available because he said he was on holiday with his family. It caused quite a stink at the time because no-one believed a footballer could put his family before the World Cup Finals. There was talk that he would never be selected for England again, but in the event he was.

Another Leeds United player, Paul Reaney broke his leg just weeks before the tournament began.

Along with Paul Madeley and Paul Reaney, Ian Storey-Moore and Henry Newton were included in th FKS Mexico World Cup 1970 book and the ESSO coins, but aren't in the list of hopefuls above.

Yes it was my first World Cup that I remember, so it was probably responsible for getting me interested as a fan, also. I love everything about it, and even now people talk about Banks' save as one of the very best ever, and Brazil's 70 team being THE best ever, so it has stood the test of
time.

Do the Website !!! I would love to see it. I would link it that's for sure. It'll save me doing it, too!!!

See Star players of Mexico
See
Emails Summer 2004, for the 6 names left out of the squad when it reduced from 28 to 22.

Andy Cunningham So can anyone help with this request ?

Bob
Wonder if you can help. I'm trying to find out details of a Gungot Tekin , a former Turkish international who played for Galatasaray in the late 60's early 70's, but I can't find anything on him. Any idea of websites that could help? Any advice greatly appreciated Best wishes Andy Cunningham

I love requests like this one because I wonder why anyone would want to know! I have to admit I'm stuck on this one, I've never had a request for a Turkish player before.  I would love to know more about Gungot if anyone does have any information.

Kevin Rye: writes

Bob,

I have a number of editions of 'Football Monthly' ranging from 1956 to 1961, including the March 1958 edition with a picture of Duncan Edwards on the front and an insert commemorating the lives lost in the Munich aircrash.
Would you know anyone who may be interested in purchasing them from me? They are almost all in good, if not very good, condition.

Thanks

Kevin Rye

Any regular readers to the site's email page will already know my answer to this. Basically your best bet is to go to the auction sites and sell them there. These magazines are actually very sought after, and I would guess sell for between 2 to 5 pounds each if the condition is good. Sometimes the price goes up if you are lucky enough to get several bidders competing against each other. See Links: Commercial for suggested auction sites.

Roger Barber writes

Hi. I think that Tony Currie was one of the greatest footballers England produced. I remember as a teenager watching Star Soccer on a Sunday afternoon and seeing him destroy the opposition single-handedly.

Can you tell me where I can get a video of him? I have tried the Blades shop but they don't have one.   Regards   Roger Barber

I agree he was a great player - my memory of him was mainly whilst he was at Leeds United.  I've never seen a video dedicated to him or even that features him in particular, so I'm afraid I can't help there. A definate gap in the market - I would say  ...  Does anyone else know of one ?

Jules made this request

Hi Bob, great site! Just wondering if u know where I can get sound clips or goal clips from the
70's? Desperate to find David Coleman, in the 74 FA Cup final..saying . Toshack...Keegan...wuuuuun nil, goals pay the rent and Keegan gets his share!

Just not the same any more, is it?! Please, please help!
Jules

Thanks for the 'great site' comment. There aren't lots of places to get sound clips I'm afraid. The best sites I've seen that do, tend to get closed down pretty quickly.

... In fact I was just about to give you a link from one remaining site I knew of and that's gone now , too !!!

I think a better bet would be to try and trace a BBC video of 70s Football, all the finals have been released.

I don't think young fans today will ever experience football like we did, money truely has taken over and it's become a soap opera at the Premiership level. But I still love it and could never stop supporting Leeds !!

Sorry I can't help more with the clip. One of my very best football moments is Coleman at the 72 Cup Final saying 'Clarke .... 1-0', I've said that a thousand times.

- Postscript - if you are a Liverpool fan it is worth registering to the official site, they have classic clips there. The Newcastle Cup Final match isn't available yet, but they do have Liverpool v Everton from the 70-71 season itself !!!! It was in November and was 3-2 to Liverpool.

Rich Holiday asked

Dear Bob,

Can you send me any info on
Topical Times books. When we were 8 both my cousin and I were given the 1987 book and have been obsessed with it ever since and permanently refer back to it. Yet we have never heard of it in any other context, before or since. Please help!

Rich

I presume you found the page
http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/topical.htm

Other than the fact that I grew up with the album, and got one every Christmas for years, I don't know too much about it. They certainly date from 1961 possibly earlier, and they produced one in 2001 because I sent it as  a Christmas present ! Perhaps it would be worth writng to them to find out more. Anyone else have any history I can pass on ?

Peter Mcgrath wrote

Bob, I have many players current whereabouts held on file I will look them out and contact you later.  Is it possible you can help me with the whereabouts of some Ex Players example David Best Ex Ipswich. Great site for someone like me who collects autographs.
Regards
Peter Mcgrath

Well www.askgreaves.com does list David Best. I'm having trouble logging on to it right now, but the book it's based on says that he lives in Wareham and (in 1997 at least) was manager of Wareham Rangers in the Dorset combination, that's as up to date as I can be on David I'm afraid.

I'm glad you like the site - I look forward to ANY information you can send, I'll include it on the site straight away. And that gore for everybody who writes to the site.

Conor Laverty wrote

Hi Bob, looking though your site. very good (thanks- Bob), and lots of info in there. I was particularly interested in information about the great Pat Jennings. I saw him a week ago in an ice cream shop in Northern Ireland. He had a kid (probably a grandchild) under his arm, and still managed to hold 3 or 4 ice creams! I've never known him to drop anything!!

He was an idol for everyone my age when I was younger, and it was great to meet him.  Do you happen to know any good web sites dedicated to Pat ?

Also, do you know where I could find all the Premiership results from 92-2001, as I need to settle a score with some people! Good site, keep it up.

You saw Pat !! That's great. He has got the biggest hands in the World, so it does not surprise me that he didn't drop anything. He was an idol of mine too - even though he played for Spurs (my position was goalie).   Hmm I don't know of a Pat Jennings site as such, but if you find one tell me and I'll link it up.

As for results of the Premiership Bruce Smith's book ' Premier League Record File' printed by Virgin, is excellent but only goes up to 2000 (no edition this year unfortunately). What do you need to know? I might be able to help or at least point you in the direction you need.

Sara Clark enquired

Hi!  Wonder if you can help...  I heard that Geoff Hurst was doing a book signing tomorrow lunchtime in London W1 (the Charing Cross Road area)  do you know anything about it????  I desperately need to know where..........   Thanks, Sara Clark

Ah ... no I'm afraid I don't, but anyone wanting a signed copy of Geoff's book should go to The Times - Sir Geoff Hurst

Katie asked a favour

I know this might seem a strange request but I am looking for help.

My father, a life long WBA fan, is retiring the end of this month and I have got a replica Jersy of the FA cup final in 67/68.

What I am looking for is for Jeff Astle to sign it.

It would be appreciated if you could contact me as to how I could go about this.

I really wish I could help unfortunately I don't have any contacts with the players themselves - much as I wish I did. It might be best to contact West Brom and see if they know how to contact him, though I imagine you've thought of that !

Claire asked this favour

Dear Bobby,
I'm writing to you on behalf of St --- Primary School, we are a small group who organise fund raising events. In November we are holding our major fund raising event, a grand auction of donations and promises. We are trying to raise enough money to complete our computer suite. This as you can image costly and long awaited project which will directly and greatly benefit all the children.

Bearing this in mind is there any donation such as memorabilia that we can auction off on the night to the highest bidder. Anything no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.

Well I was just about to send of my junior school goalie shirt, when I realised that this was intended for Bobby Charlton - not me, Bob(by) Dunning. As I said above, I have no contact with the players themselves, I'm merely a fan ! If you want to send me a knighthood through the internet, I will gladly receive this, however. Good luck with the fundraising though !!!

Brenda asked this favour ...

Hi Bob,   Hope you can help us.  My Sister-in-Law has been trying for ages to find an address to write to for the autograph and picture of Peter Shilton, without any success.   Have you any idea where we might obtain this information??   Your help would be greatly appreciated.   Many thanks.   Brenda

Can we spot a theme here ? Of course Brenda didn't realise hers was the third such email in a day, but I have to admit I didn't spend hours researching an answer ...

Eflin commented

Hallo Owen, I just wanna say that  I'm the bigest fan-natic fans of you. Please give me your picture, thank you.

Now I definately can't handle Michael Owen's fan mail too, not after the summer he's just had ... Anyway try http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/  Liverpool's official site

MKM asks

Hi-

Just wondering if you could help me.  Could you tell me who won the World Cup
in soccer in 2000?
As you may be able to tell, I don't know much about sports - I am just doing
some research.

Thanks so much.
MKM

Wow it's nice be asked something I don't have to look up for once :-)

France won the last World Cup in 1998, the next Finals are not until 2002 as it's every four years.

Dan Bergsman asked

Is Ali McGraw still alive?

I'm not sure I even know who Ali McGraw is ... does anyone else ??? (See Denis Law and Ali McGraw)

Will Brown asked

Bob - I have three complete collections of the Wonderful World of Soccer Stars I made when I was 10 -   First Div 68- 69 First Div 69-70 Mexico 70
Are they worth anything - if so do you know how much?
Cheers
Will Brown (a gashead)

How much the albums are worth will, of course depend on how well you looked after them both as a ten year old, and subsequently, of course. At the auction sites last year a complete 70-71 album in good condition from the same series sold for over a hundred quid.

That's unusual, though, I've seen the World Cup 70 album sell for only 20 quid on a bad auction.
If you are wanting to sell them I would specify a reserve fee of at least 40 quid.

See
http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/links.htm#commercial for suggested sites.

I hope this helps. Mind you, I would love to have those albums and wouldn't be able to sell them even if I was destitute !

Norbert Hakoun asked

Dear  Sir   I' m  Searching for Video tapes  (VHS  PAL) with Arsenal matches from 1970-1971. Do you know of any ?

Good to hear from you. The 1970-71 Arsenal team was indeed one of the best in the history of the English football. There is a video of the 70-71 season available, also the BBC have done a video of the FA Cup Final. There is a section on Arsenal which includes most of the videos I know about http://www.soccer-books.co.uk/acatalog/acatalog.html

Atanas Gospodinov writes

Hi Bob,

I am Atanas from Haskovo, Bulgaria. Can you help me any more info for my heores as a boy Norman Whiteside and Frank Stapleton. Did they live in the UK. Somebody told me that Frank has a farm in Cheshire and Norman works part time as a physio for few 1st Division clubs, did you know is it true and if yes, please let me know what clubs Norman is physio?

Thanks for your time, Atanas

Yes, did you know soon I received back from Dunfermline a photo signed from ex-United Jimmy Nicholl

I have to admit I'm not sure of the whereabouts of either player.

http://www.askgreaves.com/ is a good 'Where are they now ?' site, but they have Frank Stapleton as being a manager in the US, and says that NormanWhiteside is on the After-dinner speaking.

Rob Saunders had this interesting enquiry

Hi Bob,   I have just acquired autographs of Charles Buchan and Alex James. Do you have any information on either of them ?.   Kind Regards, Rob Saunders

Well they're a bit before the time of my site. They have being Arsenal players in common.

Charlie Buchan was a player in the 1920's that played for Leyton,Sunderland, Arsenal and England. He was an FA Cup winner  with Arsenal in 1927. He's known to later generations as being the name behind Charles Buchan's Football Monthly and Yearbook. He died in 1960.

Alex James is a part of the great Arsenal team of the Thirties which won 4 Championships and reached 3 FA Cup Finals. He was bought by Arsenal from Preston, and he began his career at Raith. He played just 8 games for Scotland.  He became a journalist and coach after retirement in 1937. He died in 1953.

Given that both players are legendary and died many years ago, I would say that the autographs are pretty valuable.

Peter asked an oft asked question

Dear Bob  -  I have been searching and searching for a copy of 'The Wonderful World of Soccer Stars' (1970/71 edition) for over ten years without success and only came across your website the other day. Do you know of anyone who has this album and who is willing to sell it? Peter

Your best bet is the Auction sites, they quite often come up for sale there. I don't know what you consider a 'good price', but a complete good condition copy did sell for over a hundred pounds - which isn't that bad. Incomplete copies in used condition tend to sell for 40-60 pounds, though the odd one slips through cheaper than that.

See http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/links.htm#commercial
If you type 'fks' into the search engines on the auction sites, you usually come up with something, though you'll have to be patient to get exactly what you want. Complete copies don't come up as often, obviously.

There was one link that had the album for sale for a fixed price, but that disappeared and I've never seen one since. It was selling complete albums in the 100 pound area, too.

Let me know if you find another way of buying one, I would be very keen to pass the information - and at 100 pounds I'm not in the market to compete with you for buying one !!
