Peter McConnell made this suggestion,

Hey Bob!

Gotta get some info on Ray Crawford.  70-71 was his last season - he played for Colchester in the Fourth.  He scored the winner that knocked Leeds out of the Cup.  It's a famous photo - surely someone's got one. If you check out his record, you'll find he's a goal machine.  143 from 197 games in a spell at Ipswich during which they won the Championship.  Definitely a "Where Are They Now?".
Regards, Peter Mc.

This is one of many great suggestions Peter sends in. There is now a Ray Crawford page, which includes the picture mentioned in Peter's mail.

Steven Tallents chatted with me via email during the month

Hi Bob, I love the website (thanks - Bob), I have only just found you and intend to spend many hours reflecting on past glories. I have been trying to trace Peter Storey, Arsenal, for ages. Do you know where he is working? I am trying to collect the autographs of every England player since the war. Arsenal FC have no idea where Peter is so any help would be invaluable. I have been in touch with over 600 ex-players and will send you some details later. Keep up the good work.   Steven

PS I have just started a website at   Football 57

No I have to admit I'm not sure - a recent 'where are they now ?' of the double winning team in the Daily Mirror, said he is a driver in South London - I don't know any more than that I'm afraid.   Any tales of your exploits would be VERY welcome, it would be great to know what some of the players from the 70-71 site are up to now. To this day I've only ever spoken to Eddie Gray, so I'm very jealous ! What a great project.   Cheers   Let us know more !   Bob

Well Steven did write back, with loads of great information, which was so good, I've included on the 'Where are they now ?' page.

Andrew Rowley asked

Dear Bob
To settle a discussion could you advise the final member of the back 4 in West Ham's FA Cup win of the early 80's. We have Billy Bonds, Alvin Martin and Frank Lampard but not the 4th.
  Thanks. Andrew Rowley

The team that day was: Parkes, Stewart, Lampard, Bonds, Martin, Devonshire, Allen, Pearson, Cross, Brooking, Pike. So it looks like Ray Stewart is the missing man.

Incidentally www.innotts.co.uk-~soccer-facup-finals.htm lists ever cup final player up to 1998-99 if you have a similar enquiry.

Glenn asked

Could you please tell me where I can purchase a 1970's long sleeved Leicester City shirt.   Thank You

Have you tried:   http://www.toffs.com/ ?   Their full catalouge has everything from Man U to Roy of the Rovers, so surely they've got Leicester City.   ... yes they have I've just been and checked !!   I hope it's what you're after.

Hello Bob,
I've been searching to find information on the  "Aintree Iron" for a long time. It has been bugging me ever since I heard  the song, "Thank You Very Much", by  Scaffold.

I've had many suggestions emailed me, the latest of which is that Tommy Smith, who payed for Liverpool, was called Aintree Iron. Is this correct, and could you send meany  further information on him?
Thanks in advance.

Cheers from Canada,

Henry Ballon

Hmmm if it is his name, I've never heard of it before. I've been asking around, I'll let you know if I find out.
My Tommy Smith page is at
http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/tomsmith.htm. I saw him in the newspaper only the other week. He does the after dinner speaking circuit these days. He pops up quite often on telly giving his views about Liverpool having been a major part of their team in the 60s and 70s.

Keith Roberts asked another question I didn't know the answer to !!!

Dear Bob, which two teams played the 1st F.A.Cup game played on astroturf ?      Cheers, Keith Roberts.

I didn't have a clue on this one, I'm afraid - anyone else know ?

Joseph Smith continued the incredibly difficult questions with ...

Hi Bob, could you please help. Im trying to find information on the great Bobby Moore, (West Ham, Fulham, and of course England.) I'm trying to find out who he played against to knotch up his 1,000th first class game, hope you can help or even direct me to a site that can. Thanks Bob much appreciated.

I'd love to know the answer to that one, though ...

John informed me that

Can you tell me more about Alan Ball .......the Everton footballer .....from the 70 s he was my hero and would like to know where he is and what he does now
thanks
lydia

Hi Lydia,   thanks for writing http://www.soccer-files.com/playerprofiles/index.cfm?playerid=694 has a career profile.

After a series of management jobs in which he famously relegated a number of teams, his last club - a couple of seasons ago was Portsmouth. Since being sacked by them he has mostly used his status as a 1966 World Cup winner with England to do media work and special appearances. The last time I saw him was launching a football charity on Comic Relief.

In fact there's a picture of him in this month's football cyber-newspaper at
http://www.football365.com/content/news/main/fw_mainnews_563116.htm talking about Southampton a club he both played for and managed.
My page for him is at http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/alanball.htm   I hope that helps.

Peter Tidball and I had a brief chat ...

Hi Bob. I wonder if you can help me in a quest of mine. As a very young lad I had a sticker album which I think was called soccer stars 1970.all I can remember about it was that there was a wolves player and a man utd player on the front cover and also on the back I seem to remember. It was the first sticker album I ever had and I remember it took me ages to collect the set.

I also had the sticker album for the 1970 world cup which I remember that Revelino was the hardest one to get and I was the envy of all my pals when I got  it to complete the book.

Anyway, the albums have long since disappeared and I would love to see some of the stickers again as I can clearly remembera lot of them.do you know of a similar website where some of these stickers are featured or better still, where I might be able to get the original albums from? Oh how I wish I had looked after things when I was young. Hope you can help me out with this.

Yes, I know how you feel ... My whole website is based on the 1970-71 album, so I really wish I'd kept everything in top condition ! I remember the album you mention, I have this feeling the Wolves player was Francis Munro, but this is based on memory, not evidence !!! I collected the 1970 World Cup album, too and I'm fairly certain I completed it.

The best place to look for the albums is at the auction sites, especially
www.ebay.co.uk and www.yahoo.co.uk they very often have material from that time for sale. The album you are talking about is not the 70-71 album, but it is definately around that time, 71-72 or 72-73 I reckon. It can sell for anything between 10 pounds to 100 pounds depending on how complete it is and how many people are bidding for it. You'll probably be bidding against me if
the price hasn't got sillly !

http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/links.htm#commercial  has more accurate links to find the album. I would suggest you put 'FKS' into the search engine and see what comes up, because that's the company which made the album.

By doing that I see there's a World Cup stickers album up there now !

Anyway thanks for writing and I hope this helps.

Peter replied ... Thanks very much for the info, I will check it out and see what I can find. Loved your website by the way (thanks ! - Bob).

When you get a second have a look at the pic of Keith Weller cos I'm sure that shirt he's wearing has been painted onto the picture in some way. I seem to remember that this happened a lot in those days with the football stickers, maybe it was cos he'd just joined the club and all the printers had was a pic of him at his old club.

I reckon the album I was refering to must have been the 69/70 one . Thanks again for the info and if I find out any more about it I will let you know what I dig up. I remember now looking at the pics on your site that I collected that one as well but not sure if I completed it.

World of Soccer Stars 70-71 pictures

Keith Weller Chelsea

Keith Newton Everton

Keith Newton - Everton

Yes you're right about the painted shirts. Keith Weller would have only just joined from Millwall. Keith Newton on the Everton page is another obvious one - no doubt his picture had him in a Blackburn Rovers shirt, he'd not long since moved. I can't imagine children putting up with that nowadays !

The reason I didn't suggest the 69-70 album was that it was George Best on the front - I'm not sure if he was with a Wolves player or not.

Ian Beacham wrote

Bob,   Do you know when Charles Buchan's Football Monthly came to an end as a magazine ? Did it lose its Charles Buchan tag in the Seventies?   Thanks,   Ian Beacham

Yes it did drop Charles Buchan's name and ran on way into the 80s as 'Football Monthly'. I have to admit though I'm not sure of the exact dates. I think it ended around 1973, but at this moment I don't have any more details than that.

If anyone has more information I would really like to know to include it on the site.

Barbara Coop wrote about her friend and namesake, Mick Coop

Hi there:  I was just wondering if you know the whereabouts of Mick Coop now?  Do you have any photos you could e-mail us?  Also, any info you have on him, such as when did he play and for what teams? We got to meet Mick about in 1980 or so when he came to the United States and  was playing one summer on the Detroit (Michigan) Express team.

When the Detorit team played the Houston (Texas) team, he got us tickets and we went to that game which was played in Houston's Astrodome.  We got to meet Mick after the game and went to a club withhim.  My husband's family was originally from England and we, too, have the last name of Coop.  Mick had a son named James, and so do we!

So any updates you can give us on Mick would be appreciated.  The last we heard, he and his wife, Dottie, were living in Leamington Spa. Looking forward to hearing from you.  Also, love your web site. Barbara and James Coop
Lewisville, Texas

Thanks for writing and including such nice comments about the site. Well http://www.soccer-files.com/playerprofiles/index.cfm?playerid=3454 includes some of Mick's career details.

The most up to date information I have on Mick was that he was on Coventry City's book as a coach as recently as 1996, but I'm not sure about at present. If you wanted to contact him again, I dare say Coventry City would still have the forwarding address !

'Coop' is an unusual name - the only other English League player was a Jim Coop.

Running the website is made all the more special for receiving posts such as yours, so thanks again for writing.

Paula Hacker wrote

Hi bob, I have 3 books hardbacks, that may well be of interest to you, they are 1951/52, 1953/54, and 1955/56, Charles Buchan's Soccer Gift Books, I am interested to know if they are worth selling and what I would possibly get for them, thank you very much for your help. Paula Hacker.

The Charles Buchan books are very popular with people. The ones you have are a little before my time even, but I love all old annuals. I must admit I'm not much of an expert when it come to the value of things. It will depend on the quality, of course, if the pages are tatty and/or have been written on they are worth much less than copies in mint condition. The problem is for collecting purposes, most people only pay good money for editions that are spotless, and these books were usually owned by children at some stage !

My advise is to look at the sort of money being paid for similar items at the auction sites, see http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/links.htm#commercial. Just type 'Charles Buchan' into the search engines.   It's not often that books from the 50's come up so they may be worth a bit more than later editions, but I'm guessing that they'll only fetch 5-10 pounds. Also, dealers will want to give you less than the going rate so that they can make a profit, too.

If you go to these sites, don't be confused by the Charles Buchan Monthly Magazine - they tend to be much rarer and hence are more valuable than the annuals, especially in good condition.   Anyway, I hope that helps.

Tracey Parker had a very unusual request

Hello
Not sure if you can help me but do you know the name and words of the 'World Cup Willy' song from the 1966 world cup, or where I can find this out. At work we are dressing as the 1966 team for a competition.  We have just had a meeting with our boss and she would like us to all learn the words so we can sing the song too!  Thanks Tracey.

I've got 'World Cup Willie' by Lonnie Donegan on a cd called 'England's Glory', that I picked up in a charity shop. See http://www.cherryred.co.uk/football/englandsglory.htm. I sent a copy of the song to Tracey, but I don't yet know if her team won the competition !

Helen Keen wrote with arguably an even more unusual question ...

Hi Bob!
I am trying to track down any info on the Cortina 1600e's supplied to the England Squad in the 1970 World Cup!
Any records of who was given which car and the whereabouts of the Squad members today?
Thanks! Helen Keen

Well, once again, I haven't got a clue, but I was fascinated to know more about it. Helen sent some more information, which I could not resist including on July 2001's 'Where are they now?' page.

Jim Maguire asked

In English soccer, which team were promoted to the Nationwide League from the Conference at the conclusion of the 2000-2001 season?

Well that would be Brian Talbot's Rushton and Diamonds - see I do know some 2000-2001 information, too !
