When
Brian Clough took over the team in 1967, they were
Division Two mainstays whose only honour - the 1946
F.A.Cup win - was looking like a long time ago. There was
little expectation that the young Clough was going to
lead his team to the club's first League Championship.
The Second Division Championship had come in 1968-69, and
the team featured on these pages was essentially the side
that quietly made such an impression on Seventies
football. Clough's Derby County won the Championship in
the following season to these pages, 1971-72, and there
was a Texaco Cup win in 1972 also.
Ask most people and
they'll probablly mistakenly believe Clough won two
Championships at Derby County. Indeed, it was a shock to
all concerned when Clough departed Derby County for what
became a disastrous 44 day spell as Don Revie's
replacement as manager at Leeds United. Clough's
successor at Derby was the former player featured in the
team below, Dave Mackay, and he was the manager for
Derby County's second League Championship in 1974-75. But
we all knew that it was Clough's team ... In fact
McGovern and O'Hare (see below) followed Clough to Leeds
United and then Nottingham Forest, where Clough was
turning another second division outfit into European
Champions. Derby meanwhile were sliding back to obscurity
which culminated in a return to (the old) Division Three
between 1984-86.
Another player listed below, Roy McFarland, attempted to
return the club to top flight status (in 1984, and
1993-95), but it was Jim Smith (Boston), who finally promoted Derby
County to the Premier League, where they stayed for six
seasons. As things looked gloomy in 2001-2002, Colin
Todd, who moved to Derby County during the 70-71 season
from Sunderland, replaced Smith. He lasted in
the post only months before being sacked, the team was
relegated. it was good to see the club rise back to the
Premiership in 2007 for yet another shot at matching the
glory years.
On May 8th, 1972,
Clough was famously on holiday abroad - Derby's season
having already ended - when he heard of their
Championship victory. Leeds United's defeat at Wolves
ended their double hopes having won the F.A. Cup a few
days before. Maybe it is because of this that Derby
County v Leeds United matches still have a feel of the
old Seventies rivalry about them making them that bit
more special.
