Mr Arthur Shepherd first opened a shop in Oxford in 1877. It was at 62 Cornmarket Street. His shop still exists as Shepherd & Woodward in The High.

His son Ernest Shepherd opened a branch in Cambridge in 1902, at 32 Trinity Street. He sent over Fred Smith to manage the shop. From 1912 to 1937 Fred was in partnership with Ernest Shepherd, then in 1937 he became the sole proprietor of the shop.

After the War, in 1946, Fred’s younger son Geoffry Smith joined the business. Fred died in 1947.

In 1979 Geoffry’s son-in-law Kenneth joined the business and he and Geoffry worked together until Geoffry’s retirement at the age of 80 in 1995. Geoffry died on August 11th 2002 and we still mourn his passing.

In 2002 we celebrated being in business here in Trinity Street for 100 years.
