| 1. Allow at least one minute for birds to settle before starting the count. | |||||||||
| 2. Count all birds seen and heard in each of the 3 distance categories above and flying over, within the five minute count period. Make appropriate notes during the count (e.g. in pencil) and at the end total up/summarise each species for each distance. Include migrants and other non-breeding birds in the count, although many of these will not have ABBA species numbers. | |||||||||
| 3. Do not carry out counts in rain, high winds or other adverse conditions. Counts can be done at any time of day or year. | |||||||||

| Visibility = Good, Moderate, Poor. | |||||||||
| Wind = Calm, Light, Breezy. | |||||||||
| Cloud = None, 1 (0-33%), 2 (33-66%), 3 (66-100%). | |||||||||
