1791 - 1991

1991 is the bicentenary year of some interesting events in national and world history. In England in 1791 Boswell published his 'Life of Johnson1 and the Methodists mourned the death of John Wesley. The world's oldest Sunday newspaper, 'The Observerr', came into being.

Over the water, the Frerch Revolutionary Constitution was promulgated and the year also saw the flight of King Louis XVI In the New World, the white populations were shocked by the revolt of the slaves in Haiti. The customers of the coffee houses of London had plenty to discuss in 1791: however, the more things change, the more they remain the same.

The retiring Chairman, Mr.C.J.dohnson, was thanked for his five successful years in the office. During the coming year, Mr.Downie will be responsible for hosting the monthly meetings, Mr .Hickinbotham for organising our speakers, Mr.Davis for the membership lists and Mr. Saville for the Society's records and files. Mr..Johnson kindly offered to keep his eye on our audio-visual needs.
